1 Plymouth Canton al Park Course Syllabus Course Name: Web Design and Internet Course Number: Course Course Description: Grades 9-12 This is an introductory course covering the basic concepts, techniques, and issues related to designing, developing, and maintaining a website. We will study the elements and principles that separate exceptional websites from those that are poorly designed. Students will learn how to create professional looking websites by using HTML, JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). The student s understanding and creativity will be extended and evaluated through a variety of projects and simulation scenarios. In addition, Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 software will be used to provide additional design tools needed to create high quality, dynamic, and interactive sites. Note: Course qualifies for Visual, Performing, and Applied Arts graduation requirement. Become an expert user of this industry standard market-leading software. Course Prerequisites: No Prerequisites Course Materials/Resources: Textbooks: HTML & JavaScript Programming Concepts by Turner & Barksdale Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 Revealed by Sherry Bishop Software: Notepad++ and Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 Other Materials: none Recommended Student Supplies/Materials: Flash drive would be helpful Course Objectives: This class is designed to teach students the basics of Web Page Design. In this class students will learn to write basic HTML and JavaScript code along with using Dreamweaver software to create more sophisticated websites. Students will have some creative freedom in the design and creation of their Web sites as they learn the fundamentals of professional web page design. Performance Objectives: Utilize search engines for efficient Internet searches Write, edit and proof basic HTML and JavaScript code 1
2 Plymouth Canton al Park Use critical thinking skills to solve problems associated with coding web pages Use project management skills to manage time effectively in the completion of projects Understand Legal, Ethical, Design and Safety Standards as they apply to the workplace and within the creation of Web pages Communicate digitally by using Web pages to convey appropriate messages to clients and coworkers Use skills in grammar, mathematics and science to design and develop Web pages Provide information in an administrative capacity in regards to Internet Safety and Security Use Multimedia to convey a message through creation of various Web pages Identify and implement quality assurance processes to deliver quality digital communication products and services Course Requirements: Work Based Learning is a valuable experience in which every student in Career and is required to participate. All students will be given opportunities to attend a minimum of one field experience each school year. Those students who do not attend the scheduled experience(s) will be required to find a site where they will spend a minimum of one class period in a business related to their program of study. The student will be required to get the teacher s signed permission, the parent/guardian s signed permission, fill out a training agreement to be signed by the site supervisor, and provide their own transportation to and from the site. Upon completion of the field experience, the student will turn in a question and answer assignment provided by the teacher regarding the experience. Grading System: In class assignments approximately 40% Quizzes and Tests approximately 30% Participation in group activities approximately 20% Final Exam, which is cumulative approximately 10% Grades will be posted on MISTAR (formerly called Zangle) on a regular basis. We will also use e-park 2 (formerly called Moodle) as an online classroom management system. This will allow the student to turn in work electronically, print handouts, and view missed assignments. Students will be required to work both in groups and on individual projects. At times, students will choose their own groups while other times groups will be assigned. Please let me know privately if you know you will have difficulty working with a particular student in the class and every effort will be taken to avoid this situation. 2

Course Policies & Expectations Behavior Students are expected to follow the Code of Conduct as posted on the school website (pcep.pccs.k12.mi.us/codeofconduct) School technology is to be used for educational purposes only. Students are not allowed to bring food or beverages into the computer lab other than water. You are responsible for doing your own work. Any plagiarism or copying of any kind will result in loss of credit on the assignment for all students involved! Cell phones and other electronic devices are a distraction in the learning process and should not be used in class. Students caught using a cell phone during a test or quiz will receive a zero on the test or quiz. Late Work (work turned in after determined / assigned due date): Tests/Quizzes must be taken day they are assigned 5
6 Plymouth Canton al Park Assignments that are turned in after the due date set by instructor o 5% from grade received will be deducted for each day late, for up to 5 days late o Assignment turned in after 5 days will be evaluated by instructor, but the student will receive no more than 50% for their grade on the assignment. After 7 days the student will receive a zero. Make-up: Students will be allowed to make up all possible work. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain missed assignments. It is possible that certain kinds of school work such as labs or skillpractice sessions cannot be made up and, as a result, may negatively impact a student s grade. In keeping with the Code of Conduct---students will be only allowed to make up work due to an excused or excluded (Medical or Court) absence. Work/tests missed due to unexcused absences cannot be made up. Missed Assignments: o Work assigned prior to an absence (including long-term/major projects/papers) Work is due upon return from absence (Ex. A painting is due in Art class on Monday when the student is absent. The student returns to school on Tuesday. The assignment must be turned in on Tuesday) o Work assigned on date of an absence - One day grace period for each day missed (Ex. If student is absent on Monday, make-up work is provided on Tuesday, and would be due on Wednesday) Misse d Tests/Quizzes: o Test missed on date of absence - If student has prior knowledge of test date and has had the opportunity to take part in review session, student is expected to take test day of return o Test review session on date of absence- If student did not have the opportunity to take part in review session, student will be given review material or given review session and given one day grace period to take test o Note: Alternate test may be given Academic Credit This course offers the following academic credit: Business/CTE elective credit VPAA (Aplied Arts) ***All students are expected to follow the posted classroom/computer lab policies as well as all policies and procedures in the PCEP Student Handbook Code of Conduct. 6
