1 Welcome Increase efficiency using automated, industry-tailored checklists and forms for the engagement planning and performance of your compilation and review engagements: Create a Client Engagement PPC s SMART Practice Aids is an innovative tool that brings advanced functionality to your licensed PPC s Practice Aids products to optimize the overall engagement process. You can create a client engagement from a PPC Title or from a Master Engagement. Creating an engagement from a PPC Title creates a blank engagement based on the PPC title you select. Creating an engagement from a Master Engagement imports any information from the previously generated master engagement into the new client engagement. For support, go to or call Thomson Reuters. 2 GENERAL NAVIGATION General Navigation SMART Practice Aids uses an easy-to-navigate three-pane design. Take a few minutes to get familiar with the names of the interface features. This will help you better understand the Help's step-by-step procedures that show you how to use SMART Practice Aids. Navigation Pane You can hide or display the Navigation pane and right pane using the "pin" icons that appear at the top of the panes. 3 HOW TO COMPLETE PROCEDURES How to Complete Procedures When you finish creating a new engagement, or when you open an existing one, it opens in the SMART Navigator by default. Note: In addition to SMART Navigator, you can navigate your engagement through the left hand navigation pane or the tabs at the bottom of the screen. You can also navigate via the View Procedures link at the top of the screen. To complete a procedure using the SMART Navigator view: 1. Click the More... link beside the procedure to check if there is more information that needs to be completed. The Procedure Details for Review Procedures window opens with the information. 2. Click the Practical Considerations link. If there are any forms available in the practical considerations, you can add them from here. (See Add Forms) 3. Once you have completed your form, return to the SMART Navigator by using the menu button at the top or by clicking the SMART Navigator tab at the bottom of the screen. 4 HOW TO COMPLETE PROCEDURES 4. In the SMART Navigator view, click the Start button beside the step. The Review Procedures steps open up in the completion view. 5. You can add a comment beside each step by clicking the icon beside the step. 6. Right click in the Done by or N/A column. From the pop-up menu select Step Sign-off. You can also select Step Sign-off from the Insert menu. 7. You can also insert a Workpaper Reference if necessary. Right-click in the Workpaper Reference column and select Insert Workpaper Reference from the pop-up menu. If you switch back to the SMART Navigator view, you will see a Completed button beside the procedure you have completed. PPC's SMART Practice Aids Compilation and Review - Quick Reference - 4
5 HOW TO ADD FORMS How to Add Forms While completing a procedure, you can add additional forms that are available for that procedure from Practical Considerations. To add a form: 1. In the review engagement, click the More... link. The Procedure Details for Review Procedures window opens. 2. Click Practical Considerations. The Practical Considerations window opens with details of any additional forms you can add to the procedure. 3. Double-click the link to the form. The Go to/link To Workpaper window opens. 6 HOW TO ADD FORMS 4. Select the required form and click Go to Selected to go to the form or click Add Link to Step to add a link to the form in that particular step. PPC's SMART Practice Aids Compilation and Review - Quick Reference - 6
7 DOCUMENT IDENTIFIED RISKS Document Identified Risks The ability to document identified risks is provided based on your response to a SMART Engagement setup question. In a review engagement, if you answer Yes to the SMART setup engagement question Would you like to document identified risks?, SMART Practice Aids will provide you with the ability to enter a description of the risks you identify and select the areas affected by those risks. Click the Explain link on the right hand side of the screen to open a help pop-up window that provides useful information about the feature. 8 ADD RISK Add Risk In your review engagement, once you answer yes to the SMART Setup Engagement Question to document the risk, you have the option to add a risk. You will not see this option unless you previously selected to document identified risks. Click the Add Risk button in the Identified Risks pane on the right. In the Identified Risk dialog, enter a description in the available field. Select any applicable Financial Statement areas and click Finish. 10 HOW TO INSERT OR MODIFY PROCEDURE How to Insert or Modify Procedure Go to the Insert menu or right click and select Insert Procedure. You can insert a Procedure Above or Below. Describe the procedure and click OK. To Modify a procedure Right click and select Modify. PPC's SMART Practice Aids Compilation and Review - Quick Reference - 10
11 HOW TO INSERT OR MODIFY PROCEDURE. Type/Modify the text and click OK. A flag icon appears next to the modified text, hovering over it tells you that the step has been modified. PPC's SMART Practice Aids Compilation and Review - Quick Reference - 11
12 HOW TO INSERT OR MODIFY PROCEDURE Click the flag and the Reset Procedure window opens. You have the option of selecting the previous option or the modified version as needed. PPC's SMART Practice Aids Compilation and Review - Quick Reference - 12
13 SMART DESIGN VIEW SMART Design View Note: SMART design view will only appear if you have added a risk to the review engagement. Select Procedures Design from the left hand navigation pane and select your procedure form. In the upper right hand corner of the main screen, select SMART design view. You can edit your procedures and view the risk you had entered in one screen. PPC's SMART Practice Aids Compilation and Review - Quick Reference - 13
14 SMART ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES DOCUMENTATION FORM SMART Analytical Procedures Documentation Form To add the SMART Analytical Procedures Documentation Form to an engagement created that you selected to manage your engagement using external engagement management software: 1. Open a review engagement. (See Open a Saved Engagement) 2. On the left hand navigation pane, click an appendix in the procedures design section. 3. Select Completion view in the drop-down at the upper right hand corner of the screen. For a clearer view of the procedure, right-click Steps at the top of the screen and select Expand All. Scroll through the procedures. 4. In one of the Practical Considerations, you will see a link for the SMART Analytical Procedures Documentation Form. Double-click the link to open the form in Excel. 15 SMART ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES DOCUMENTATION FORM 5. Complete the form as required. Save and close. Note: If you are using external management software, the only way to add the SMART Analytical Procedures Documentation Form is to link from a practical consideration. To add the SMART Analytical Procedures Documentation Form to an engagement created that you selected not to manage your engagement using external engagement management software, from the Insert menu, select Add Forms, PPC Forms. 16 CREATE SMART DOCS Create SMART Docs You can create SMART image documents (SMART Docs) for any of the PPC workpapers in your engagement for use outside of SMART Practice Aids, such as for storing them in your engagement management software. Select Create SMART Docs from the Tools menu. To make it easy to stay in synch with workpapers you have stored in your engagement software, a flag icon next to the document name indicates that the document has never been created, or that it has changed since the last time it was created. 17 ROLLFORWARD A CLIENT ENGAGEMENT TO A NEW CLIENT ENGAGEMENT Rollforward a Client Engagement to a New Client Engagement Engagement Rollforward lets you create a new engagement based on a prior period engagement. When rolling an engagement forward, be sure to follow the best practice guidelines. To rollforward a client engagement: 1. Open an engagement to be rolled forward. 2. On the File menu, click Rollforward. The Rollforward Engagement window appears. PPC's SMART Practice Aids Compilation and Review - Quick Reference - 17
18 TOOLS MENU Tools Menu These options are available from the Tools menu on the main menu bar. Certain items will be grayed out when not applicable. Name Description Shortcut Add Risk Regenerate Audit Area Clear Risk Assessment Workpaper Status Report Add a new risk to the current form when working in Step 1 - Identify Risks and Step 2 - Assess Effects of Risks. Clears the audit program and reselect procedures based on the current risk assessments. Clears all risk assessments for the current audit area and sets them back to "Select." Runs the Workpaper Status Report. (If you have Field Work installed, this option will be enabled.) The Transfer Engagement submenu has the following options. Name Description Shortcut Alt + T + A N/A N/A N/A Transfer Engagement Client Engagement Transfer an existing client engagement to another database. F10 Alt + T + T Master Engagement Transfer an existing master engagement to another database. N/A Receive Engagement Import an existing engagement into your database. Shift F10 Affirm Confirm a prior period assertion for the current period. Alt + T + M Affirm Row Affirms the responses in the entire row of a table. N/A Affirm Table Affirms the responses in the entire table. N/A Affirm All Confirm all prior period assertions for the current period. Alt + T + L Update SMART Engagement Update an audit program within the current engagement to include user's changes to the generated version of the same audit program document. The Wrap-up submenu has the following options. Name Description Shortcut N/A Wrap-up Delete Backup Files Select and delete backup files that have been created using the File > Backup action.
