1 Advanced Map Layout Options - Extent Indicators Article ID : TT Software : ArcGIS Desktop 10 Platform : Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 Date : 12 th June, 2012 Introduction Extent indicators is a way for users to show locations of a detail map. When a map is zoomed to a certain level, the features may not be recognized by map users easily. Extent indicators can show the details of a map in a larger scale and identify the detail portion of the map in a certain extent. In ArcGIS Desktop 10, there are three possible results that the extent indicators can produce. They are simple extent indicator, clipped extent indicator and extent indicator with data driven pages. 1 Background 1.1 We have a "CanadaDetail" data frame storing large scale (detail) map feature classes. 2 1.2 By right clicking "CandaExtent" data frame, then select "activate", we can go to a small scale map of the same data set. 1.3 Click on layout view (bottom left of data window), we can have a map in this appearance. Users may arrange data frames size and position. They may also add gridlines, legend, north arrow, etc. to the map layout. All rights reserved. P. 2 of 9
3 2 Simple extent indicators 2.1 Right click on "CanadaExtent" data frame, choose "properties", then select "extent indicators" tab. 2.2 Select "CanadaDetail" and click the middle right arrow. The data that need to be indicated will be identified in "CanadaExtent" data frame. All rights reserved. P. 3 of 9
4 2.3 Click "OK" and close the "data frame properties" window. The extent of "CanadaDetail" had been indicated in "CanadaExtent" data frame. 2.4 Users may open the "data frame properties" of "CanadaExtent" again. They may amend the border, background and other properties of indicator by clicking "Frame" button. They may also add a line between the detail map and the indicator map by ticking "Show Leader", the Leader's properties can be changed by clicking the "Leader Symbol" button. All rights reserved. 5 3 Clipped extent indicators 3.1 Users may right click "CanadaDetail" data frame and click "activate", then right click the data frame again to open its "data frame properties" window, choose "data frame" tab. 3.2 Users then can choose "Clip to shape" in "Clip Options", the "Specific Shape" button will be activated. 3.3 Click on "Specific Shape" button and choose the layer that the clipping will base on. Then click "OK" on both windows. All rights reserved. P. 5 of 9
6 3.4 All layers will be clipped by the target layer, the relevant extent in the "CanadaDetail" data frame will also be indicated in "CanadaExtent" data frame. 3.5 Users may right click "CanadaExtent" to activate the data frame and right click again to start "data frame properties" window. Choose "Extent Indicators" again, by ticking "Use simple extent", the boundary of the indicator will be resumed as the extent of "CanadeDetail" data frame. All rights reserved. P. 6 of 9

8 4 Extent indicators with Data Driven Pages 4.1 Users may revise view of a map by using Data Driven Pages. Data Driven Pages is a function that help user to drive to different location of a map systematically. By activating Data Driven Pages, users need to click on "Customize" button of main menu, then select "toolbars", then "Data Driven Pages" toolbar will be shown. 4.2 Right click "CanadaDetail" to activate the data frame. Then click on the "Data Driven Page Setup" button to open the setup window. Users need to tick the "Enable Data Driven Pages" and choose a layer that the map view update will be based on. 9 4.3 Users will find that map content in "CanadaDetail" data frame will be changed when they push on "Next Page" button on "Data Driven Pages" toolbar. The extent indicator will also be revised accordingly in "CanadaExtent" data frame. The End All rights reserved. P. 9 of 9
