We will also look at a few features in the search results such as filtering and swapping editions.

3 Slide 3 Search All Titles Advanced Search Form Search All Titles Advanced Search Form So let s get go ahead and get started by taking a look at Search ALL Titles. If you start out somewhere else in OASIS you can access this screen from the main menu on the left it s the very top item.

4 Slide 4 Search All Titles Keyword and Save Feature Search All Titles Keyword & Save Let s start out with a keyword search: renewable energy AND developing countries The parentheses look for words next to each other somewhere in the title details metadata. I have entered AND but this is implied so is not necessary. I am also using a Date Search for Selection Cycle Complete (enter Jan 1, 2012 to dateand by using this particular date search I am searching a specific subset of titles in the database which have been fully vetted by our internal selectors as part of our approval work flow. If I wanted to cast a wider net for my search I would use the copyright year or the publication date. Select the Search button results 27 If we scroll through the titles we find our search terms are not in the first title listed but if we go to the Title Details and move down to the Table of Contents Figure 1.6 and Figure 1.7 these phrases are included. This is because the keyword search box, unlike the other fields, is searching all of the metadata / fields in the Titles Details. I also want to show you that if I don t have time to review all these titles at this time you can select the REVISE THIS SEARCH and go back to the search screen without loosing any of the information you previously entered, name your search and save to call up from the Saved Search dropdown later.

5 Slide 5 Search All Titles Date Search Results Looking at this same search let s take a look at some search results using other Date search options. First let s look at Copyright Year (you will need to delete the date in the Date Search box. Select Search Results 55 titles In the results you will see (example: number 9 in the list of titles sorted by copyright date - author Ottinger) items which have a copyright date of 2012 or Some can be Not Yet Published, or you might have copyright dates which were actually published in So you might prefer a Publication Date search Revise and change the date search to Publication date (Specified Jan to date) and your results will give you all titles that were published in this time frame. And as you can see when you scroll through the list the copyright date varies considerably. Select Search results 37 Titles

6 Slide 6 Search All Titles Classification & Language Perhaps you are looking for a current body of foreign literature for individual authors from a particular region and you want only titles which have been translated into English: LC Classification:[PJ TO PJ7876] Narrow this with a Date Search again using Selection Cycle Complete: All dates after. July 1, 2012 to date. This will give me more recent fiction I also want to focus on translations so I am setting the Language: English - results 28 So here I have a fairly narrow set of primary Arabic literature translated into English.

7 Slide 7 Search All Titles Readership Levels Using Readership Levels can help you narrow your search to specific group i.e. lower, upper undergraduate, graduate levels. An example given to me by another one of my colleagues starts with a keyword search for dinosaur extinction If I didn t limit my search I would get over 200 results and if I didn t specify Readership Level in particular I would get books such as Dino-mite dinosaur jokes or Anonymous Rex : a detective story - both very interesting reads I am sure but not quite what I am looking for. By narrowing the Readership Levels to lower, upper undergraduate and graduate levels we have limited a search of over 200 titles which included general popular and juvenile titles to 29 titles which are more focused on what I was looking for. Scroll down to number 2 in the search results screen Deleuze and performance my first thought is why did this come up? Dinosaur and extinction is not in the title or the subject headings but as I scroll through the Table of Contents I find extinction referred to in Chapter 4 and Dinosaur referred to in Chapter 9 still not what I want. So let s further vet your search results by using the Filter option in the upper left corner and filter by title contains dinosaur the results of 14 titles are much better but let s remove that filter and try filtering by LC Classification starts with QE - results 19 much better. I ve expanded my results a bit but still excluded those items which do not directly relate to my topic.

8 Slide 8 Search All Titles Subject and Interdisciplinary Parameters Search All Titles Subject & Interdisciplinary Here s a really interesting use of the LC / MESH box because this box is performing a keyword search you don t have to remember specific subject heading formats Let s try personal narratives holocaust and combine that with Women s Studies as an Interdisciplinary Subject Results - 9

9 Slide 9 Search All Titles Subject and Interdisciplinary Parameters Search All Titles Subject & Interdisciplinary Here s another example where I have chosen an LC Classification broad range of N for Visual Arts What I am interested in finding are publications relating to business aspects of visual arts so let s select one of the Interdisciplinary Subjects for Business Results 24 If I wanted to narrow my search even more to a particular audience level I can again use my filter and limit to Readership contains graduate which will give lower, upper and graduate research levels. 10 Slide 10 Search All Titles University Press as the Publisher Binding Format Search All Titles Univ Press/Publisher Binding Format Because the boxes in the Search All Titles screen are doing keyword searching you can use this to search for recently published University Press titles by entering this term in the Publisher box. When I did a search earlier this week I defined my search by date using Publication Date Month to Date and still got over results. So I decided I what I was really interested in were university press ebooks added to the database in the Last 7 days so I further narrow the search by ebook platforms by using the Binding Format Results 197 If I was only interested in either MyiLibrary or EBSCO platform I could use the Edition Preferences. For example let s revise our search and change the Binding Format to MyiLibary ONLY Results 91 so all but 6 of the titles are available on the MyiLibrary platform.

11 Slide 11 Search All Titles Using Dewey Classifications Search All Titles Using Dewey Classifications I also wanted to mentioned that although I have focused on LC during this presentation you can search by and drill down using the Dewey Classification. For example when I select Dewey I can go to 780 which is music and limit that to Selection Cycle Complete Month to Date Results 6 In the first title you see one of my browse columns is LC Class but when I go to the Title Details I can see the corresponding Dewey Class. I could also change my preferences in Administration which we will cover in another session.

13 Slide 13 Search Results A Closer Look Search Results A Closer Look Quick Search box Top of Screen Excel Download (icon) Filtering Revise This Search Browse Row See Inside the Book Alternate Editions & Links Platform (icons) Title Details provides the metadata used to search and locate titles, authors, subjects, descriptions, notes, dates, etc.. So just as a final look at some important features that I want to point out in the your search results. The Excel icon in the upper right corner is a very useful tool when you select this you get a dropdown with a number of columns options checked which can be selected for downloading. You can customize this Excel file with the information that is important to you. Again, you also have a dropdown filter box where you can narrow your search results even further. You have seen me use the Revise This Search button many times during this presentation it can be very useful and a time saver.
