1 Home Page Scavenger Hunt World Book Kids For Desktops and Laptops Log-in ID: Password: : Welcome Page Click on Kids Loading HOMEPAGE» Explore the hundreds of images using the arrows page. on the home» Click to learn more.» Click the pink arrow to minimise the feature box. This will let you see a full view of the picture.» Click the pink arrow to bring up the feature box. The picture will change each time you go back to the home page. Page 1

2 HOW TO SEARCH There are two key ways to search for a subject. 1. Use your keyboard to type a word in Search 2. Use Explore 1. The home page features a large Search box in the centre of the page. On all other pages of the site, the search box will appear in the top right corner.» When you start to type a word, suggestions will appear with matching titles you may be looking for. You can select one of the suggestions or choose the magnifying glass to see a complete list of search results. 2. Choose the Explore button next to the search box on the home page to view the eight main categories to begin exploring articles. Page 2

3 HOW TO SEARCH USING THE SEARCH BOX 1. Use your keyboard to type a word in the Search box.» Type dog into the Search box. When you start to type you will notice a list appear. You can either click on one of the links or click on to see a full list of search results.» For this lesson click on to see the full list of search results.» Click on the Dog article.» Read the article to answer the question. Question: World Book Kids has many interesting facts about dogs. What does a dog do when it s hot? Answer: button shows pictures, maps, or videos that match your search word. Click on the Contents tab on the top right to take you quickly to each section of the Dog article.» Click on the top left hand side of the page to go back to the home page. 4 HOW TO SEARCH USING THE EXPLORE BUTTON 2. Use the Explore button to begin exploring articles. Dig in!» A dog is a living thing so click on Each of the 8 buttons will take you to different topics. Dig Deeper!» A dog is an animal so click to take you to articles from Animals. Dig Deeper!» There are different kinds of animals a dog is a mammal.» Click on the button. Dig Deeper!» Click on the button.» Scroll down the page until you find Dog A small picture with a blue link to take you to the article. Page 4

5 EXPLORING THE ARTICLE: Clicking on the following tabs will make it easier for you to explore more. 1. Takes you back to the previous page you were viewing. 2. Takes you to a list of pictures, sound or videos relating to an article. 3. Takes you to more encyclopedia articles, websites, games, and questions relating to an article. 4. Takes you quickly to each section of an article. 5. Takes you to 6 different tools and settings: download, , print, citations, translate this text, and hear text read aloud. 6 FEATURE CONTAINER ON THE HOME PAGE The buttons helps you find all the main features on the Kids site. Click to view the image gallery containing lots of pictures and videos. Click to enter World of Animals to compare animals side-by-side. Click to access all Activities. Click to access Interactive Maps, World Book Atlas, and Outline Maps and Flags. Click to access puzzles, crosswords, sorting games, matching games and multiple-choice games. Click to access information on important people (biographies). Click to compare places e.g. compare continents, countries and states. Click to access Science Project ideas, for teachers and students. Click to access the World Book Dictionary. PICTURES AND VIDEOS There are 8 main sections in this feature. Choose one category to start, and dig deeper by choosing more categories to search for the picture or video you are looking for. Page 6

7 WORLD OF ANIMALS World of Animals lets you learn more about your favourite animal! You can compare animals to find a collection of animal facts, videos, pictures, and web links. Not sure where to find an animal? Click on Compare All Animals Let s compare a crocodile with an alligator.» Click on the Reptiles button because they are both reptiles. You can browse animals by clicking the arrow or using the filter button.» Find the crocodile and click on the picture. This will open the crocodile facts box on the left hand side.» Click» Search for the alligator and click on the picture. This will open the alligator facts box on the right hand side.» Click to compare the two animals side by side. You can now view all the facts about crocodiles and alligators. 8 ACTIVITIES There are 11 fun categories in this feature including activity sheets you can download and print. Explore each section to find activities you would like to do. 9 MAPS AND MORE This feature is divided into 3 sections: Interactive Maps World Book Atlas Outline Maps & Flags The pictures on each button show an example of the type of map. INTERACTIVE MAPS: Explore maps by using the zoom controls or toggle between terrain, satellite, and map view.» Click on button. You can also find links to World Book articles displayed as colour-coded pins.» Use the search box to explore the interactive maps.» To close the info box click» To Zoom In click on +» To Zoom Out click on - Maps can be displayed in satellite or map view.» To change the view click on one of the boxes located at the top of the map. 10 WORLD BOOK ATLAS: You can view hundreds of maps using the World Book Atlas.» Click on button.» Find Antarctica using the drop-down menu.» Click on Antarctica. Question: Name the ocean that surrounds Antarctica? In World Book Atlas you will see a map of the world. You can either choose any of the labels on the image of the world to view a map or select a place from the drop-down menu. My favourite games are: MEDALS You are awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals at the end of each game. Puzzles and crosswords award medals depending on how fast and accurate you complete the puzzle. This is the place to go. 1. Type a name or keyword into the search box to for a biography article. For example, the search results for Kiri Te Kanawa can be found if you search for "Te Kanawa" or "opera". 2. If you're not sure who you want to look up, you can use the biography browse to filter biographies matching options in up to 4 categories Page 11

12 COMPARE PLACES This is where you can compare continents, countries, states, or compare everything with the click of a button. Let s compare New Zealand with Fiji.» Click on to compare New Zealand with Fiji. 1. To select New Zealand, click on the arrow and scroll through until you see the New Zealand flag. 2. Click to select Fiji. 3. Click on the arrow and scroll through until you find Fiji and select the Fijian flag. 4. Click to compare the 2 countries side by side. 5. Explore each section to find the science projects and experiments you would like to do. 14 DICTIONARY» Click on button. There are two ways you can search for the meaning of a word: 1. The first way is to search within the dictionary using the Search Box on the dictionary page.» Type dictionary in the Search Box and click Go Question: What order are words listed in a dictionary? Answer: 2. The second way is to search the dictionary by Double-clicking words in the article to see the definition. You can find the definition of any word in any World Book article by double-clicking on the word.» Double click on the word alphabetical.
