Creating a new room 1. To create a room you must have access rights to a corridor. For example, Science teachers have access to a science corridor. This will allow you to create a room off of that corridor. If you don t have permission to create a room then you will need to see the Fronter administrator. 2. From the Rooms selector choose Create new room. 3. Select the corridor and enter a name for the room. 4. It is possible to import the structure from another room or you can start from scratch. 5. Scroll down the page and choose the tool package for the room e.g. LA Default Secondary Classroom Tool Package. Russell Bryant 2011 Page 1
6. Scroll to the bottom right hand corner of the window and click on Save You have now created your room and have added the furniture (This is the tool package). Adding members to a room Only members of a room can view a room and therefore the next stage in developing a room is to add the members. If you have created a room you are automatically the owner of the room. 1. Select the Members tool. 2. Click on the word Edit (top right of the window). You must now enrol the members into the room. 3. In the Enrol box you can search for a particular class by typing their name in the search window. Now click on Search and the computer will find the group. Alternatively select More this gives you a list of all the groups that you have access to. 4. Select the group by placing a tick in the box. 5. You must also select the type of access you want the group to have usually this is Write (student). 6. Now click on Add (Bottom right of the window). The group of students will be added to the room. 7. To check this has worked click on the Members tool, you should now see a list of all the members of the room. 8. If you tick all the students in the list and select Add to favourites from the bottom of the window, the room will then be added to the students list of rooms when they click on their Rooms tab. Russell Bryant 2011 Page 2
Creating resources Page You can create pages for students to view and interact with. Lots of different elements can be put together to make a page. 1. Select the Resources tool within resources you can upload files or develop your own resources. 2. Click on Create (top right) and enter a title for your page. 3. Select Page (see below) and then Save (bottom right). 5. You will be offered a number of elements that you can select to add your page. Each element is stored in a container. You can add as many containers to a page as you require. 4. The first element to add to the page is probably going to be text. Click on Insert Text. 5. A word processor will appear enter some text into the box Use the editing tools to edit the text and then click Save. Russell Bryant 2011 Page 3
6. Click on the plus sign to add another container. This time we are going to add an image. 7. Select Insert Image. 8. If you have already uploaded the image, then you need to find it by selecting one of the existing folders alternatively click on Browse and navigate to the image that you want to upload. 9. Once you have found the image, select it and click on Open. 10. Now click on Save (bottom right hand corner of the window). 11. You can now view your text and your image. 12. Click on Close to view the page. 13. If you want to edit the page again tick the Edit box. 14. Now try adding some other elements to the page such as Forum (you must have already created a forum for this to work); Line; Vote; Empty Space etc Creating resources - Embedding a video onto a page. It is easy to embed a video that has already been uploaded to You Tube or LGFL Video Central onto a page. 1. Open You Tube (or LGFL Video Central) 2. Find the video that you would like to embed. Russell Bryant 2011 Page 4
3. Select Share and highlight the Embed text and copy it (you may need to choose Use old embed code ). 4. Open Fronter and navigate to the Resource area of your room. 5. Create a new Page or go to the edit screen of an existing page. 6. Select Insert Text. 7. The word processor will open select the Insert embed content icon. 8. Paste the embedded text that you copied from You Tube. 9. Click on Insert and a box will appear with the word Flash at its centre. Now click on Save the embedded video will now appear on the page. 10. Click the button in the middle of the video to play it. Code can be embedded from Video Central using the same method. Creating resources Forum 1. From inside your room select the Resources icon. Now click on Forum. Russell Bryant 2011 Page 5
2. Enter a title for your forum and in the description box enter a description of your forum e.g. you could enter a question What is Science? 3. You must choose the type of forum: 4. Decide when you would like the forum to be open from and to and then click on Save. 5. Your forum is now ready for use. You could link it to a page for easy access by students or you could embed it onto a page by selecting the dynamic today element container. Creating resources Test 1. From inside your room select the Resources icon. Now click on Test. 2. Enter a title for your test and click on Save. 3. Click on New question. 4. Enter the question in the box. Russell Bryant 2011 Page 6
5. Now enter the possible answers. In addition, tick the box for the correct answer and give it a mark. 6. Save the question and then repeat this process for the next question. 7. When you have finished the test you can activate it by ticking the activate box. Once the test is activated it will be available to students. 8. It is possible to produce complex tests with a range of question types explore all of the tabs to see what they do. Click on help within Fronter for a more detailed look at using the Test tool. Creating resources Fronter document multiple authors This type of document can be edited by a group of students They can add text, images etc. The computer keeps a record of each version of the document as it is being developed. 1. From inside your room select the Resources icon. 2. Now click on Create. 3. Select Fronter Document Multiple Authors. 4. You can now enter a title for the document and then enter some text. 5. Click on Save. 4. Other authors can open the document edit it, add their own paragraphs. 5. You can also view different versions of the document using the version control window at the top of the page. Russell Bryant 2011 Page 7
Creating resources Fronter document one author This works in the same way as a multiple author document, but is written by a single person with the opportunity for other pupils (or the teacher) to add comments. Creating resources Article This is used for producing a simple document that includes text and images. You can then embed the article into a page. When the article is updated it automatically updates inside the page. This is particular useful if you are producing an online magazine or if you want to include dynamic text on a number of pages. 1. From inside your room select the Resources icon. Now click on Create. 2. Select Fronter Document Article. Creating resources Learning path A learning path enables you to link pages together into a path. At some point along the way you can have a test. You can then use the result from the test to produce a fork in the path There are now two paths. Before you create your learning path it is a good idea for you to create all of your pages. 1. From inside your room select the Resources icon. Now click on Create. 2. Enter a title and then select Learning path and then Save. 3. Select the Diagram tab. 4. Each box represents a page. Click on the arrow to the left of the first box and choose Add page. 5. Navigate to your resources folder and select the page that you want as the first page of your learning path. 6. Repeat this process for each page of your learning path. If you have a test to insert select Insert test. 7. Select the test you wish to insert. Russell Bryant 2011 Page 8
8. A new window will appear. Decide how many marks the person needs to continue to the next page along the path. You must click on Insert to select how many marks they need, to move along the other path. 9. Select Preview on the first page to view your learning path. 10. Use the Next button (top right) to move to the next page along the path. Organising a room Each room can have its own set of furniture i.e. tools. It is possible to add and remove tools according to how the room will be used. Each room starts off with a standard tool package that might include: Members This tool can be used to view or edit the members of a room Room This tool can be used to view the page view, edit the room tools etc Resources This can be used to store room resources Student folders This is similar to the resources folder and can be used to store student resources. Hand-in This is where pupils hand in their work Portfolio This tool contains a record of pupil progress and general activity in the room. How to add and remove tools from a room 1. Click on the Room icon Russell Bryant 2011 Page 9
2. From the drop down menu in the top right of the window select Customise tool package. 3. To delete an existing tool, click on that tool and then select Delete. 4. You can also change access rights to a tool. This is useful if you wish to hide a tool from a student member of a room, but have it visible to a teacher who is using the room. It is good practice to edit the title of the room so that it says hidden in brackets. This makes it clear to a teacher that what they can see, is invisible to students. Here is an example where the access has been changed: Russell Bryant 2011 Page 10
5. You can change the order in which the tools appear by using the up and down arrows. 6. To add a new tool to a room click on New Tool (this is at the bottom of the list of tools). 7. A new window will appear, select the tool that you wish to add by ticking the box next to the tool and then select Save. How to add the Frontpage tool to a room Frontpage is a bit like the homepage for a room. It is a useful tool that allows pupils to see a content-rich homepage when they open a room. The Frontpage will always be visible from within the room simply by clicking on the Frontpage icon. 1. If the Frontpage tool is not already in the room you will need to add it to the room (see the instructions on how to add a new tool). 2. You must also make sure that the Frontpage tool is displayed at the top of the list of tools (see the instructions on how to change the order of tools in a list). Russell Bryant 2011 Page 11
3. To edit the Frontpage click on the Frontpage tool and put a tick in the Edit box. 4. You can now edit the Frontpage in the same that you edit a regular page (see How to create resources page for more information). It is also possible to have more than one front page and be able to switch the front page for a particular lesson. 5. Any page that you want to be a Frontpage must have the Add to Frontpage box ticked. 6. If you now tick the Folders box (top right) and then tick Resource Information (top left). You will see a list of the possible frontpages. 7. Use the up and down arrows to move the pages up and down the list. The page that appears at the top of the list will be the page that shows as the frontpage. Russell Bryant 2011 Page 12
