New help feature EBSCO is accessible only to designated members This is the general key word search text box Basic search performs a key word search of the bibliographic record and the full text Advanced search provides fields to focus the search and perform combined searches: keyword + subject. Selecting Advanced search opens a search window Authors and Corporate authors easier to use advanced Lists [coming feature] Series [coming feature] Subjects easier to use advanced search Titles easier to use advanced search

2 The basic search: The basic search text field now has predictive search feature that provides options as letters are typed. The terms can be ignored or selected by clicking on the word or phrase The GO-run search your search button turns green when search terms are typed in a field Once the search terms have been entered, click the Green GO button to perform the search. The advanced screen also has the predictive search feature

3 The advanced search window opens Green Clear Close GO all fields search Search keywords button button window General keyword field in bib record or fulltext button 1) The general keyword text box becomes blank a. This is where keywords are entered b. If your search is fine with all of the default search parameters, click green GO button to run search 2) Choose the type of search: and,or, not, phrase, exact, best match a. System defaults to the phrase (words are search in the order that they appear) b. If phrase finds no matches, try the search using the Boolean opeator: and 3) Check box determines if the bibliographic record or all of the full text is searched a. To keyword search only the bibliographic record leave the check box unchecked b. To keyword search the full text of all articles, books, papers, etc., check the box 4) Title search enter words from the title here a. Click green GO button to run search b. If using the phrase does not work try using and c. Sometimes using fewer words finds the title 5) Author search enter last name here (last, first or first last) a. Enter the name and click the Green Go button b. The ABC button opens a window to the authority list of all author s names i. Click author s name in right column - you can also perform search of the author list within the window ii. In left column name appears in : Selected Terms box iii. Lower right corner, click finish button iv. Window closes v. Name populates the Author search field vi. Click Green GO button or continue configuring search parameters 6) Subject search enter controlled vocabulary subject terms a. Enter the term and click the Green Go button b. The ABC button opens a window to the authority list of subject terms i. Click subject term in right column - you can also perform search of subject terms within the window ii. In left column name appears in : Selected Terms box iii. Lower right corner, click finish button iv. Window closes v. Term populates the Subject search field vi. Click Green GO button or continue configuring search parameters 7) Date range search a. Enter the years YYYY to YYYY 8) Select document type a. The default is to search All b. Choose a specific type by clicking on your choice c. You may choose more than one type to include by holding down the Ctrl key and click each document type 9) Once you have set up your search criteria, click the Green GO button to search the online catalog

4 Example search for articles about minority interests: subject search and subject and keyword search Note: Help tips are available for each field. Place your cursor on any window and a hoover window will open with an explanation about the field, First search subject authority list for minority interests, to keep the search simple start with minority. Search term appears in search field and you may also search for other terms within this window Legend for how the terms relate in a hierarchy of the thesaurus Subject authority list shows Minority interests as a term, and a broader term of Partial interests in the right hand column. 5 Click on minority interests term in the right column that will populate the Selected Terms field in the lower left column. Click the Finish button to close the window Subject term field now displays Minority Interests Select Articles in the Select document type box Click the Green Go button Search results screen: The search results screen display two titles Now to expand the search to look for more articles that discusses minority interests but less focused Remember that Partial Interests was a broader term Continue next page

6 This will be a subject term and keyword search: Click big search box to start another search, notice that your previous search is still populates the search screen Type: minority interests in to the general keyword box Check the box to include fulltext in search Leave search logic: the phrase Repeat subject term authority search or type: Partial interests in the subject term field Click Green Go Button Broader search found more articles but of a broader scope. There is one overlap (depending on whom was performing the cataloging).

7 Keyword search: superadequacy Subject term search found one article. Now try a simple keyword search Clear subject field or click the eraser to return fields to default status Type: superadequacy in the keyword field Leave check box empty Click the Green Go button Two articles are found Click the keyword field again to open the search screen search parameters remain Click on the check box to put check mark to include the fulltext of the articles in the search Click the Green GO button Now 49 articles are found If you want to narrow this search, go to the next page

8 Continue keyword search: superadequacy Now to narrow the search Click on the keyword field again to open the search screen Add the word: warehouse to the keyword search Click on the drop box to change the search logic to all words (Boolean: and) Click the Green GO button Now 12 titles are found

9 Keyword search: test of reasonableness Use the * to truncate to find all variations of the word reasonableness Leave search operator on the phrase so that these words appear in this order 5 titles are found Click on the keyword field again to open the search screen. Click on the check box to search the fulltext Now 16 titles are found
