1 Accessing the L4U Learning Commons Library Your Client code and PIN will work for both of our libraries: Overdrive E-Library link L4U Library link To Find the physical library, go to the HCOS main page - click on the Learning Commons tab on the right hand side. You will go to the HCS Learning Commons Blog or go to: You will find tutorials and helpful information when you click on the How to Use the Library Icon: To log into the library, click on the L4U Library icon. Log in: using the client code from the L4U (starts with a P and is 6 or 7 digits long) OR your last name (L4U only, Overdrive requires the number), and the PIN. Once logged in you will see the MY PROFILE page: You will see what you have out and when it is due Total number of items out Fines/charges Renewal icon click here to renew items
2 My History icon Advanced Bookings icon See all the items you have booked for future dates. Searching the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) Click on the Home Tab: Quick Search is used for word or phrase searching. All searches from the Quick Search are based on keywords. If you enter a word or phrase and do not choose a field to search (ie: just press ENTER), L4U defaults to a Keyword search. The Sounds Like search is not very accurate. Use Title, Subject, Author or Series searches which are more accurate. To find the unit study kits, type in the title of the unit study in the search box and use the phrase: unit study to limit results ie. animal unit study.
3 Topic Searches are accessed by clicking the Topic Search link. Scroll through the list using the Left or Right arrow and Click on the desired Topic; they are organized by Dewey numbers. Curriculum and kits are located in the 001 Resources icon. Click: Topic Search, 001 Resources, then the sub topic Unit Studies. Click on the icon and the search results are displayed. You can scroll through the list and click on a title to book.
4 A MultiSeek search is a more specific search option. You can choose between Boolean operators (And, Or, Not), and can build a complex search string. In this example a KEYWORD search was done for chemistry OR electricity and it was limited to EDUCATION RESOURCES which is the curriculum designation. If ANY MEDIA was chosen, the results would be broader and would include results that may not be as relevant. 5. A count of items in the Bookbag will appear on screen and in the task bar. TIP: The Bookbag link will only appear in the task bar if it is currently in use.
5 Viewing Items in the Bookbag The Bookbag contents can be viewed at any time. Display the Bookbag by clicking either the Display Bookbag button available from the search results screen or the Bookbag link in the task bar from any screen. You can use the bookbag to add items you want to book for the same loan period and book all at once. * Adding Items to the bookbag does not mean they are booked! Deleting Items from the Bookbag Individual items can be removed from a Bookbag without clearing its entire contents. To remove an item from the Bookbag: 1. Click Display Bookbag or the Bookbag link. 2. Deselect the check box of the item to be removed. 3. Click Update. Emptying the Bookbag Once you are finished with a Bookbag, it can be deleted from the OPAC station. To remove an entire Bookbag simply click the Empty button (displayed in the search results screen). If the Empty button is not available, first click the Bookbag link in the task bar to display the Bookbag contents and then click Empty.
6 Placing an OPAC Booking Reservation 1. On the OPAC home page, Click Log In 2. Enter the client code or last name and the PIN 3. Click Login 4. My Profile screen will appear, Click Home or a specific search type. 5. Enter the search criteria and execute the search 6. From the Hits list, Select the desired item 7. On the item detail page, Click Place a Booking 8. Step 1 - Choose Date and Settings appears. In the field provided or using the pop up calendar, Enter the Date Required. Note: only 1 copy is allowed to be booked. 9. Click Submit 10. If the requested date is unavailable, Step 2 - Date Adjustments appears with any date adjustment and the reason it occurred. Select the next best booking period and Click Submit
7 11. Step 3 - Confirmation appears. Click Confirm Alternatively, Click Go Back and enter an new date 12. Step 4 - Booking Details appears. Click either Home or Return to Search to continue. Placing Multiple Bookings from a Bookbag Most patrons placing advanced bookings are doing so for more than one item. Using the bookbag feature of L4U OPAC, users can place a booking on multiple items at one time. However, items must be grouped by date required, as all items in the bookbag are booked at the same time, for the same dates. 1. On the OPAC home page, Click Log In 2. Enter the client code or last name and the PIN 3. Click Login 4. My Profile screen will appear, Click Home or a specific search type. 5. Enter the search criteria and execute the search. 6. From the Hits list, Select the desired item(s) by Clicking the checkbox to the left
8 of the Title 7. Click Add to Bookbag 8. Once all items have been added to the bookbag, Click Bookbag in toolbar. 9. Click Place a Booking on Current Bookbag 10. In Client For Date, Enter the date for which the booking is required 11. Or Click the calendar to the right of the field and select the date from the pop-up calendar. 12. Click Check Availability 13. A list appears outlining which items can be booked for the requested time period and those that cannot.
9 14. To place the booking on the available items, Click Confirm A screen appears listing the items booked and the due date for each. 15. If some or all bookings failed due to unavailability, a second attempt can be made by Clicking the browser s Back button and entering a new date. Use increments of 7 days to find a new booking date that may work, but not all items may be available at the same time. Modifying a Booking Once a booking has been placed it is possible to view it online and make modification to the dates. To modify a web booking: 1. On the OPAC home page, Click Log In 2. Enter the client code or last name and the PIN 3. Click Login 4. My Profile screen will appear, Click Advanced Bookings 5. From the list that displays, Select the bookings to be modified and Click Modify Selected Bookings 6. Enter the new date(s) 7. Click Check Availability 8. A list appears showing which bookings may be modified and which cannot. Click Confirm To continue making modifications, Click Go Back. 9. A screen appears listing the items booked and the modified due date for each. Deleting Bookings through OPAC Once a booking is placed it can be viewed and deleted online. To delete an existing booking: 1. On the OPAC home page, Click Log In 2. Enter the client code or last name and the PIN 3. Click Login 4. My Profile screen will appear, Click Advanced Bookings 5. From the list that displays, select the booking(s) to be deleted 6. Click Delete Selected Bookings 7. A confirmation screen displays, Click Confirm To return to the Advanced Bookings screen without deleting the bookings, Click Go Back.
