Program & Security Defaults In the Getting Started document, mention was made of the Theme Manager and even applying some of the built in themes were discussed. In addition to the many options in the Theme Manager, there are some options that you will want to set and have remain constant as you vary the appearance and functionality of your program via the Theme Manager. We have called these Program Defaults. The Program Defaults section defines what happens with your Chart Labels, what is in your Windows Title and Status Bars, the physical arrangement of your Value and Date scales and a few other minor program behavioural settings. Closely tied in with Program Defaults, is an identical set of options called Security Defaults. The way they all tie together is as follows: First, if you have set your Program defaults to display 6 digits in the Value Scale and to Auto Display two lines of information in the date scale. Then you have setup a security specific option on the Gold Price (GOLD-$) to display a 7 digit value with 2 decimal places and to only display Days of the Date Scale when viewing Gold-$ as a daily chart... Now, irrespective of what Theme is active, as you open a chart (other than GOLD-$) 6 digits of information is displayed in the Value scale and there are two lines of date information in that scale. Changing to a different theme may change the colour, Font and/or style of the Date & Value Scales, but the Value scale still displays 6 digits of information and the Date scale has two lines of information (What is displayed on those two lines auto changes as you zoom in and out to show you the most relevant information). However, when you open the chart of GOLD-$, now 7 digits (with 2 decimal places) are used in Value Scale and just a single line indicating the Days is displayed. Again as you vary the Theme, it changes the colour, Font and/or style of the Date & Value Scales, but the format/layout remains the same. As you open another chart (anything but GOLD-$) we go back to a 6 digit Value and two line Date scales. You can setup security specific items (part or all of the available options) on as many individual securities as you need to. The Program Default settings are always used. When a security is displayed for which you have set certain specific defaults, only those settings are then adjusted. The rest set to whatever the Program Defaults have defined. Charts are displayed using the currently prevailing Program Defaults, not the settings that were enabled when that chart was last displayed. Right click on a chart and select the required option (Program or Security defaults) as shown in the example here. Alternatively Program Defaults is an option of the Options menu. Each of the Program Default sections will be discussed in the pages to follow. 1
The first of the Program Defaults relate to Chart Labels as shown on the right. Chart labels are the Securities description (1.DJ-IND), Indicator descriptions (2.SIROC 34:13 of 1.DJ- IND), Moving Average (E34) and the such. Normally they are always switched on. Alternatively you could set them to be switched off. Chart Program Defaults If the Auto setting is chosen, then as the chart size is reduced (say you tile 10 charts on the screen) beyond a certain size the labels are automatically removed (so they don t take up a sizable portion of the screen!). Whatever option you choose, you can also select to Hide on Mouse Click. If you then leftclick and hold, all labels on that chart are hidden till you release the mouse button. 2
The second Program Defaults section relates to the Date & Value Scales and is shown here. Looking at the Value Scale options, the Primary Value Scale is the normal value scale you see. The Secondary Value Scale relates to the Security or Indicator that may have been overlayed onto the Primary chart. Scales Program Defaults Adjust the number of Digits accordingly. Usually you would leave this as Autocalc Digits. However you may wish to override this on certain securities (and you would do so using this concept, but in the Securities Specific section - see page 6). Setup the number of digits you require and if needed, the number of Decimal places. You will see a sample of what the resulting format will be displayed below your options. The Latest Value Display is discussed in detail on page?. You can select here to have it display on the Main and/or any inserted charts (usually indicators of the main chart, but not always). You can also choose to have the Latest Value Display show the value of the Moving Averages of the Main and/or inserted charts. Finally the Date scale can be customised. Usually it is set to Auto display 2 lines of information. As you Zoom in or out of your chart and/or change data mode, what is displayed in those two lines is intelligently adjusted to give you what we think is the most readable display. You may feel differently and wish to either hard wire in what you see when you view a Daily or Weekly, etc.. Chart, irrespective of how much data is displayed (i.e. does not change as you zoom in or out and/or adjust the chart s physical size on the screen). You may due to space constraints, wish to display just a single line of date information (or none!). Alternatively, you may wish to display 3 or 4 lines of information. To do so, un-tick Auto 2 Line and then select the data mode (DAILY is selected in the above example). Now select which items you want displayed. In the example here we have chosen to display three lines of date information on Daily charts, namely the Year, Month and Day. The results are shown in the chart here. Note the Date scale now displays the Year, Month and Day. 3
Windows Bars Program Defaults At the top of each chart the Windows Title Bar can contain information you may wish to see. In the example here the title bar contains the security name and what market sector it is from. The Date and value of where the cursor is also displayed here. At the bottom of the screen is the Status Bar (see page? for more information on the Status Bar) which contains the active stock exchange, sector code, etc.. The third Program Defaults section relates to these two items and is shown here. You can have up to eight items of information displayed in the title bar. Select which item(s) if any to be displayed from these drop-down menu boxes. Tick which items you want displayed on the Status Bar. If you select to display the Scrolling Catalog information window, you can then select which items will be displayed in this area (tick or un-tick as required from the list). 4
Miscellaneous Program Defaults The fourth and final Program Defaults section relates to showing an input box each time you select Base 100 mode and/or do a Gann Line chart. The default is to display a box and prompt you to enter the relevant information each time. The Gann Filter Box is shown on the right and the Base 100 box is shown below it. You can select a Gann Filter parameter once, tick the Don t Show Box option and then each time you select a Gann Filter, the last used parameter will automatically be used. To change this parameter you would use this option of Program Defaults and tick Show Gann Filter Box The next time you do a Gann Filter you will be prompted with the box. The same concept applies to the Base 100 option. 5
The Security Specific Defaults is identical in layout and options to the Program Defaults described in the preceding pages with the exception that you can tick the option Override Program Defaults at the bottom. If you open this option, change an item on one of the Tabs and tick the Override Program Defaults at the bottom, then when you open this security, the current program defaults are used for all items except the ones you have modified. Security Specific Defaults With this concept you can setup your Scales and/or Window Titles to a specific format for certain securities, whilst following the general Program Defaults for all other securities. 6
