Introduction to Inspiration: Inspire your students to develop their ideas and organize their thinking! Online Examples and Resources on Graphic Organizers can be found at What is Inspiration? Inspiration is a visual learning tool that helps to develop ideas and to organize thoughts. Visual learning allows students to understand more and to retain information more efficiently. Inspiration offers teachers support for enhanced learning in the classroom. What can I do with Inspiration? Brainstorming - Identify topics & expand upon ideas Planning - Students & teachers can create webs to plan ahead, prioritize, focus efforts & clarify ideas Organizing Illustrate concepts & processes Outlining - Quickly prioritize and rearrange ideas, helping to create clear, concise essays, reports and more. Prewriting - Organize & structure thoughts for clear writing & presentation Concept Mapping - Illustrate ideas & relationships Webbing - Categorize information & reveal relationships Diagram Toolbar Symbol Palette Main Idea Formatting Toolbar
Let s Get Started! Entering your main idea 1. Type your main idea "Math & Life! 2. Press Shift+Return (Shift+Enter) to end text entry and select the symbol. Use the Create tool to add an idea 1. With the main idea selected, on the Diagram toolbar, position the pointer over the Down arrow on the Create button. When you point to an arrow on the Create button, it is highlighted to show you the direction in which the new idea symbol will be created. 2. Click the Down arrow. 3. Type your idea "Money" 4. Now add a symbol connected to your idea. On the Diagram toolbar, position the pointer over the Lower Right Diagonal arrow on the Create button. 5. Click the Lower Right Diagonal arrow. 6. Type "Making Change". Press (Shift+Enter) to end text entry. Tip... You can use the position tool to reposition your diagram in the window. Just click the Position button on the Formatting Toolbar then click and drag the diagram until it's positioned where you want it. Click the button again to turn it off. Using the RapidFire tool 1. Use Inspiration's RapidFire tool to enter the things when you want to brainstorm, capturing your ideas quickly without worrying about their order.
2. With your idea ("Making Change") selected, on the Diagram toolbar, click the RapidFire button. 3. Type a response/idea (Restaurant Bill), then press Return (Enter). Once you start working in RapidFire, you use the Return (Enter) key to separate your ideas. 4. Type another response/idea (Bus Charge). 5. Click the RapidFire button to turn it off. Aside... If you see that you've made a mistake while typing text in a symbol, doubleclick the text in the symbol, then select the words you want to change and type over them. Adding Additional Symbols 1. Click the Money symbol to select it. 2. On the Diagram toolbar, click the Create lower left diagonal button. 3. Type Budgeting. (Shift + Enter) 4. On the Diagram toolbar, click the Create lower left diagonal button again. 5. Type, Clothing. (Shift + Enter). 6. Click on Budgeting. On the Diagram toolbar, click Create left button. 7. Type, House Bills. (Shift + Enter). Changing the view scale 1. On the scroll bar at the bottom left of the window, click the Zoom Out button. 2. You may click on the 100% to choose a specific size or fit to window.
Linking unconnected symbols to show how they relate to other ideas Sometimes you may accidentally forget to select an idea before clicking the create button thus leaving it unlinked. Here are the steps to link unconnected ideas. 1. On the Diagram toolbar, click the Link button. The cursor becomes a link. 2. Click the first symbol to tell Inspiration where you want to draw the link from (the primary symbol). 3. Click the second symbol to indicate where you want to draw the link to (the secondary symbol). 4. Click the Link button again to turn it off. Move idea symbols around Moving symbols is easy. Here, you will reposition the House Bills symbol so that it's further left on the diagram. 1. Click and drag the House Bills symbol to the left and release the mouse button, then click outside of the diagram to deselect the symbol. Add text on the link You can add text on a link to describe the relationship between the linked ideas. 1. Select the link that connects Budgeting and House Bills. When the link is selected, you see the outline of the text box area on the link. It's ready for you to begin typing. 2. Type utilities, mortgage, etc, and then click outside of the diagram to deselect the link. Changing symbol shapes Here, we'll make a section of the diagram stand out by changing the shape of the symbols. In this case, we're going to select Making Change and its
links and change these symbols all at the same time to make them easy to identify. 1. To select the symbols, hold down the Shift key and click Making Change, Restaurant Bill and Bus Charge. 2. On the Symbol palette, click the rounded rectangle symbol. The selected symbols take on the new shape. Adding Picture Symbols to your Diagram 1. Select the Math & Life idea. We are going to change this from a round symbol to a picture symbol using the Symbol palette arrows. 2. Click on the down arrow to see the different picture categories. 3. Click on Geography and World. Select one of the pictures. You will see that your circle symbol changed form! 4. Have fun changing your other symbols!! You may have to move your symbols around due to the larger size of the picture symbols. Working in Outline View As you can see by clicking on the Outline button, the diagram converts to outline view for students to edit, print out, and study from! We will not work on skills in Outline View during this tutorial. However, if you would like more information on using outline View, feel free to visit the Inspiration website at
Return to Diagram view Click on the Diagram button in Outline view. Your tutorial is now complete! Save your work so you can submit to your instructor. The following are additional skills you can use in Inspiration, but are not required for your assignment. Changing the font used for your idea symbols 1. To select all the symbols on your diagram, on the Edit menu, choose Select, then choose Symbols. 2. On the Formatting toolbar, select the font, size, style or color you'd like to use. Arranging your diagram into a tree chart The Arrange tool lets you change your diagram into various kinds of tree charts. 1. On the Diagram toolbar, click the Arrange button 2. Review the selections in the dialog box. You're going to use these default settings: A. Under Diagram Type, Top DownTree is selected. B. Entire Diagram is selected. C. In the Links drop-down list, Auto-90 is selected. D. Under Lowest Level Stacking Models, No Stack is selected. 3. Click OK. Tip... You can further customize your diagram by changing the color of symbols, links and text. Just select the item whose color you want to change, then click the appropriate color button on the Formatting toolbar--either Fill Color, Line Color or Text Color. Resize the diagram so it fits in the window
1. On the scroll bar at the bottom left of the window, click the Percentage box to the left of the Zoom buttons, then select Fit To Window. Printing your diagram 1. On the File menu, choose Page Setup. On the Layout tab, select Fit to 1 Page. Click Preview. 2. In the Print Preview window, click Print. If you do not want to print your diagram, click Cancel to return to the Diagram view. 3. In the printer dialog box for your printer, make your choices, then click Print (OK).
