STEPS FOR USING TURNING POINT: 1. Plug in the receiver. 2. Double click the Turning Point icon on the desktop. This will open up to the Turning Point window that has three panes. 3. You will be taken to the screen to the right. Follow the steps below to set up your class. a) Select the Manage tab on the top right. b) Click Participant List and select New. c) Name the participant list and click Create List. d) Enter the Device IDs found on the back of the ResponseCards or the ResponseWare IDs. Also, enter first and last names and any other relevant information in the appropriate cells. Press Enter for additional rows, or Tab to move between fields. e) Be sure to number your devices so that children we will able to easily identify the device they have been assigned.
4. Once you have created your class list and saved it, select the polling tab and click on PowerPoint Polling which will open PowerPoint with the Turning Point Software running as an add in (extra tab on the top right).
5. Once you are in PowerPoint, check to make sure you have plugged in the receiver and that it is working properly. To do this, select the Turning Point tab on the top right of your screen and then select Receiver. This will bring you to the screen shown to the right and you should see a channel being identified by the program which means everything is working properly. 6. Open the presentation you want to use like you would for any other PowerPoint file. Select file, open and then the file you want to use. 7. Click on drop down tab that says Auto and select your class. It defaults to auto or anonymous if you do not and you will not get specific data for your students. 8. Select the red Reset button and Select Session. This will reset all of the sides and make them ready to receive your classes data.
9. Start the slide show like you would any other PowerPoint by selecting the Slide Show Tab from the top menu and select From Beginning. This will start the presentation. Remind students that they can vote as many times as they like and that the computer will save their last vote. Also, tell them the receiver is very strong, so no trick shots are needed. They need to stay seated and just vote. You advance the slides by hitting the space bar or clicking the mouse. Be sure to not advance the slide until everyone has answered because once you advance the slide, you cannot go back and add answers. Track the student responses on the response counter that comes up in the polling pane. 10. When finished running the presentation, click Save and select Save Session. This will save your data. 11. Once the presentation is complete and you have saved the session, go to reports under the Turning Point Tab and select the reports you want. Remember to save the reports in excel or a format of your choice. I like to go to print and then preview and then save the reports as PDFs to save paper.
12. Generating Reports From a Saved Session a) Open TurningPoint and select the Manage tab. b) Select the saved session from the left panel. c) Click Reports in the bottom right corner. Tip Double-clicking the session name will also open the reports window.
13. To build you own presentation, you will need to determine which type of slide / question you want to use. Select new from the Turning Point Tab and select the type of slide you want to create. For a more specific explanation of each type of slide please refer to the Turning Point 5.3 User Guide that has been provided as a PDF. 14. Most of the time you will be using multiple choice slides. You can add it to ten possible answers. Click to expand Scoring Option on the right hand side of the screen and select Correct from the drop-down menu of the correct answer choice in the Slide Preferences. The other responses will default to incorrect. If you are conducting a survey and are only interested in the student responses and not whether or not they were correct, you do not need to select any option. If you do not want the data from each question to be graphed on the slide after each student has responded, you can right click on it and remove it. This will not affect the polling of student responses. They will just not see a graph of the results per question.
15. You can add response counters, countdowns, correct response indicators and various other options that can be accessed through the Objects Menu found on the far left of the Turning Point Tab. For a detailed explanation of each object, please refer to the Turning Point 5.3 User Guide that has been provided as a PDF. 16. Be sure to save your presentation when you are finished. 17. Any time that you want to edit a presentation or build a new one you must open Turning Point first so that it opens in PowerPoint. If you open PowerPoint and try to edit a response device activity in it, you will not have the Turning Point Menu available to you. Sometimes students will inadvertently change the channels on their response devices and if this happens, follow the steps below to put them response device back onto the correct channel. Changing the Channel on ResponseCard RF and RF LCD 1. Press the Channel button. 2. Enter the two-digit channel number. 3. Press the Channel button again. ResponseCard RF and RF LCD When the ResponseCard receives the new channel, the light will turn green.
Changing the Channel on ResponseCard NXT 1. Press the Channel button. 2. Enter the two-digit channel number. 3. Press Enter (the center button). When the ResponseCard receives the new channel, the screen will display the new channel. ResponseCard NXT Changing the Channel on ResponseCard QT Devices 1. Press the Channel button. 2. Enter the two-digit channel number. 3. Press the Channel button again. When the ResponseCard receives the new channel, the screen will display the new channel. ResponseCard QT
