Software Announcement June 18, 2002 IBM VisualAge Smalltalk Server for OS/390 and z/os, V6.0 The Deployment Environment for VisualAge Smalltalk Overview VisualAge Smalltalk Server for OS/390 and z/os, V6.0 is the run-time deployment environment for Smalltalk Server applications on OS/390 and z/os. Using Server Workbench, software developers create applications on the workstation using the same rapid development tools familiar to VisualAge Smalltalk programmers. These client/server applications can then be deployed to CICS/ESA, IMS/ESA, z/os, OS/390, or WebSphere Application Server for z/os and OS/390 with VisualAge Smalltalk Server for OS/390 and z/os. For additional information, refer to Software Announcement 202-107, dated May 7, 2002. With VisualAge Smalltalk Enterprise and VisualAge Server Workbench, you can: Write transactions for IMS and CICS Access DB2, VSAM files, and QSAM files Interface with applications using MQSeries TCP/IP, APPC, and CPI-C Interface with COBOL, C, and PL/I applications Run XML applications Interface with Web servers using servlets Run applications that host or invoke Web Services Run applications with VisualAge Smalltalk Web Connection Develop on Windows and OS/2 Asynchronous Callout, now enabled on MVS when running in the batch environment, can expand cross-platform portability and server enablement. The power of the server on z/os and OS/390 can be opened up by taking advantage of asynchronous calls within your VisualAge Smalltalk applications. With Asynchronous Callout, you can manage multiprocessor machines with a single Smalltalk image and increase the reliability of your application. Key Prerequisites Host configuration One of the following: OS/390 V2.10, or later (5647-A01) z/os V1.1, or later (5694-A01) Workstation configuration: VisualAge Smalltalk Enterprise, V6.0 Refer to the Software Requirements section for a list of optional software for the host configuration. Planned Availability Date June 21, 2002 At a Glance With VisualAge Smalltalk Enterprise and VisualAge Server Workbench, you can: Write transactions for IMS and CICS Access DB2, VSAM files, and QSAM files Interface with applications using MQSeries TCP/IP, APPC, and CPI-C Interface with COBOL, C, and PL/I applications Run XML applications Interface with Web servers using servlets Run applications that host or invoke Web Services Run applications with VisualAge Smalltalk Web Connection Develop on Windows and OS/2 For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: LE001 This announcement is provided for your information only.
