Software Announcement March 6, 2001 IBM DB2 Universal Database Server for OS/390 and z/os, Version 7 Utilities Deliver Improved Usability, Availability, and Performance for Managing your Databases Overview The DB2 Universal Database (UDB) Server for OS/390 and z/os, Version 7 utilities programs deliver improved usability, availability, and performance for managing your DB2 for OS/390 databases. A basic set of core utilities has been included as part of DB2 since Version 1 was first delivered. These utilities initially provided a basic level of services to allow customers to manage data. Some customers have preferred to obtain such functions, however, from independent software vendors that have developed utility and tools offerings that offered additional performance, function, and features beyond that contained in the DB2 core utilities. With recent releases of DB2 for OS/390, in response to clear customer demand, IBM has invested in the improvement of these core utilities. With DB2 UDB Server for OS/390 and z/os, Version 7, these utility functions have been separated from the base product and are now offered as the following individual products: DB2 Operational Utilities DB2 Diagnostic and Recovery Utilities DB2 Utilities Suite (combining the functions of DB2 Operational Utilities and DB2 Diagnostic and Recovery Utilities) These new products augment the rich Database Tools functions previously announced. For an overview of the enhanced focus on database tools, refer to Software Announcement 200-307, dated September 12, 2000. Key Prerequisites The products in this announcement will operate on any hardware configuration that supports DB2 for OS/390 and z/os, Version 7. Planned Availability Date March 30, 2001 At a Glance With Version 7, DB2 UDB Server for OS/390 utilities provide: Object Lists, Pattern Matching, and Dynamic Allocation to improve user productivity DB2 Cross Family Load capability via LOAD support for input from SQL SELECT statement A new UNLOAD Utility that allows data to be unloaded from active tables and image copies Improved data availability in Online REORG Improved data load performance with LOAD Partition Parallelism A historical perspective to space utilization and DB2 cost-based optimizer access path statistics The ability for data to be loaded concurrent with application access to the same data with Online LOAD RESUME For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: LE001 This announcement is provided for your information only. Description Improved Usability As customers grow their enterprise, they typically do so without an increase in IT staffing. As applications require new table space and indexes, the IT staff typically is required to include these in their scheduled maintenance jobs. In DB2 UDB for OS/390 and z/os, Version 7 you can take advantage of object wildcarding to dynamically build lists of table space and indexes on which the utilities should execute. A key companion to this is the ability to dynamically allocate the work and output data sets required by each utility. The space can either be calculated by the utility or the user can override the space allocations. Many customers want to analyze their table space and index sizes over a period of time in order to predict future space growth and when utilities such as REORG or RUNSTATS might be needed. In Version 7, you can also keep historical data with the: RUNSTATS utility Inline statistics gathering of the LOAD, REORG, and REBUILD utilities You don t have to change those hundreds of utilities you already have to take advantage of this new option, it can be enabled with a system parameter. Improved Performance, Availability, and Scalability With each release, DB2 for OS/390 delivers improvements for performance, availability, and scalability. In DB2 UDB for OS/390 and z/os, Version 7 you can take advantage of a new utility, UNLOAD, which provides faster data unloading than was available with the DSNTIAUL program. In addition to the unload functions of REORG UNLOAD EXTERNAL, you can also unload data from an image copy, invoke row sampling, specify field selection, and ordering, as well as using parallelism when unloading multiple partitions. Online REORG is enhanced for data availability. Now, the time required to invoke a dataset rename has been eliminated. Instead you can specify a new keyword FASTSWITCH, which will leave the data set name unchanged, but update the catalog to reference the newly reorganized dataset. When hundreds of table spaces and index objects are involved, the time savings can become quite significant. Also, parallelism is added to the BUILD2 phase. This makes it possible to process logical partitions simultaneously and shorten the elapsed time required for this phase of the Online REORG. The LOAD utility is improved in three ways: 1. Use SQL SELECT to produce input directly into LOAD. This enhancement delivers a DB2 family cross-loader function. Use any DRDA -compliant server as a data input source for populating your tables in DB2 for OS/390 and z/os. Your input can even come from non-db2 data sources by using DataJoiner for access to data from sources as diverse as Oracle and Sybase, as well as the entire DB2 Family of database servers. 2. In prior releases, many customers would run individual LOAD utilities at the partition level in order to take advantage of multiple processors. Now this same function can be performed with a single LOAD job with multiple partitions loaded in parallel and with added efficiency building secondary indexes. 3. The LOAD utility may now be run with improved data availability by specifying SHRLEVEL CHANGE. This allows LOAD to be used concurrently with queries and applications. DB2 Operational Utilities The IBM Database Administration Tools announced September 12, 2000, address common tasks required to service and support database operations. These tasks include unloading, reloading, reorganizing, copying, and catalog management. The performance of many of these are critical in meeting your company s availability commitments. These tools now include the separately ordered DB2 Operational Utilities product with the following functions: Copy to make full or incremental backups of your table spaces and indexes Load to load your tables Rebuild Index to create or rebuild your indexes Recover to restore your table spaces and indexes from backup copies and apply log records since the backup Reorg Tablespace to reorder your data, reclaim space, and restore free space Reorg Index to reorder your indexes Runstats to collect space and access path statistics on table spaces and indexes Stospace to collect space used statistics for DB2 managed table spaces and indexes Unload to unload your tables, table spaces, and backup copies DB2 Diagnostic and Recovery Utilities IBM Tools for Database Recovery and Replication announced September 12, 2000, address many customer requirements for additional backup and recovery needs that require special solutions. These additional needs may include: Archiving data Point in time recovery Online recovery Added image copy capabilities Replication of data among sites to where it is needed can enable your distributed applications For normal backup and recovery operations, the tools now include the separately ordered DB2 Diagnostic and Recovery Utilities product with the following functions: Check Data to check consistency among referentially related tables Check Index to check consistency between data and indexes Check LOB to check the consistency of LOB table spaces Copy to make full or incremental backups of your table spaces and indexes CopyToCopy to make additional backups of your table spaces and indexes asynchronously 201-050 -2-
