COWLEY COLLEGE & Area Vocational Technical School COURSE PROCEDURE FOR Student Level: This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman or the sophomore year. Catalog Description: CASCADING STYLE SHEETS CWB1838 3 Credit Hours CWB 1838 CASCADING STYLE SHEETS (3 hrs) This course will take an in-depth look at Cascading Styles Sheets (CSS) and their interaction with traditional HTML. Students will examine theoretical concepts that make CSS unique. This course will also adopt a practical hands-on approach when examining the technology. Along with examination of CSS coding, this course will explore the advancement of Web page design, as well as browser support and compatibility. Prerequisites: CWB1835 Beginning Web Design or CWB1837 Dreamweaver Controlling Purpose: This course will take an in depth look at Custom Styles Sheets and their interaction with traditional HTML. We will examine theoretical concepts that make CSS unique. Also, this course will adopt a practical hands-on approach when examining this technology. Along with examining the CSS coding, this course will explore the advancement of Web page design, as well as browser support and compatibility. Learner Outcomes: The student will understand the history of HTML and CSS, use basic CSS syntax and combine styles with HTML, understand the concepts of cascading and inheritance. The student will use basic CSS selectors, the CLASS and ID attributes, DIV and SPAN elements, and identify pseudo-classes and elements. The student will use type effectively, utilizing CSS measurement values, font properties and text spacing. The student will understand the CSS visual formatting model and use the margin, padding, border and box properties. The student will understand the basics of color and background properties. The student will understand table and list elements. The student will understand the CSS positioning properties. The student will build web pages using CSS. Units Outcomes and Criterion Based Evaluation Key for Core Content: The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows. 1

Evaluation Key: A = All major and minor goals have been achieved and the achievement level is considerably above the minimum required for doing more advanced work in the same field. B = All major goals have been achieved, but the student has failed to achieve some of the less important goals. However, the student has progressed to the point where the goals of work at the next level can be easily achieved. C = All major goals have been achieved, but many of the minor goals have not been achieved. In this grade range, the minimum level of proficiency represents a person who has achieved the major goals to the minimum amount of preparation necessary for taking more advanced work in the same field, but without any major handicap of inadequacy in his background. D = A few of the major goals have been achieved, but the student s achievement is so limited that he is not well prepared to work at a more advanced level in the same field. F = Failing, will be computed in GPA and hours attempted. N = No instruction or training in this area. UNIT 1: Understanding Cascading Style Sheets Understand the history of HTML and CSS, and how CSS is supported in the major browsers Explain why the separation of HTML structure from style information is so important to the future of the Web Identify what enhancements are included in CSS Release 2 (CSS2) Use basic CSS syntax and combine style rules with your HTML code Understand the concepts of the cascading mechanism and inheritance 2

UNIT 2: Understanding CSS Selection Techniques : Use basic CSS selectors that match element names to apply style rules Use the CLASS and ID attributes Apply style rules to <DIV> and <SPAN> elements Identify the pseudo-classes and elements that allow you to apply style rules to abstract characteristics of a document Identify the newest CSS2 selector characteristics and capabilities UNIT 3: Using the Font and Type Properties : Understand the CSS visual formatting model Use the margin properties Use the padding properties Use the border properties Use the special box properties to create floating elements 3

UNIT 4: Using Color and Backgrounds Understand the basics of computer color and its variable nature in the Web environment Express color values using a color name, hexadecimal value, or RGB value Use the color property to specify the color of element content and link colors Use the background properties to set background color, images, and background image position UNIT 5: Working with tables and lists Understand the basic HTML table code Apply CSS rules to table elements Build a page layout table Understand the CSS2 table model Use the CSS list-item style properties 4

UNIT 6: Using the Positioning Properties Understand basic positioning concepts Apply CSS positioning properties Build a page layout with positioned elements UNIT 7: Designing with Cascading Style Sheets Apply the skills you learned throughout this book by building three different types of complete Web pages using CSS Build a style sheet for online software documentation that users can view with any browser Design a promotional Web page using a table to create a two-column layout and using classes to create styles for the different sections of the document Design a home page for a Web site using a variety of CSS properties, including positioning properties Projects Required: Textbook: Contact Bookstore for current textbook. Materials/Equipment Required: Online access and appropriate software as necessary Attendance Policy: Students should adhere to the attendance policy outlined by the instructor in the course syllabus. 5

Grading Policy: The grading policy will be outlined by the instructor in the course syllabus. Maximum class size: Based on classroom occupancy Course Timeframe: The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
