3 Autodesk Inventor 2015 Advanced Course PREFACE TO THE COMPLETE TRAINING MANUAL The transition from 2D design to 3D design is well underway. With the easy to use and powerful Inventor software from Autodesk, Inc. you can also perform this transition relatively quickly. The objective of the training manual is to help you in this whole process and especially, to make the first steps of working with the CAD software as easy as possible. If the Inventor software has already been installed, you have probably already seen the very extensive and interesting Inventor Help system. What advantages do you have if you also own this training manual in addition to the documentation of the CAD system? First, you will notice the special order in which the different topics of the Inventor software are discussed in the manual. On the one hand, subsequent chapters are mostly, only dependent on the knowledge of previous chapters. On the other hand, I wanted to make sure that a beginner, in particular, should be able to quickly understand the scope of a typical 3D system in its entirety. In addition, it was vital to me to distinguish between those commands which are "absolute necessary" and "less important" tools. Therefore the book was basically divided into three parts. Within the first and second part the three main topics of most 3D systems are repeatedly explained: the "Part Modeling", the "Assembly Modeling", and the creation of "Drawings". Additionally, at the end of the second part, the chapter "Special Subjects" is also included. In this chapter more subject-specific topics are discussed, like for example "Sheet Metal Design" or "Weldment Design". Within the third part, all those topics are explained, which are also very interesting, but are not absolutely necessary to create the first designs. The many exercises will also be very beneficial for you. Basically they consist of two distinct types. On the one hand, there are the relative small exercises which are available for all theoretically discussed commands. On the other hand, there are also the major exercises, which are generally more focused on multiple subjects or on solving a design task. The additional and often different explanations of the theoretical background of the various tools and capabilities of the Inventor software in comparison to the help system can also be an advantage for you. Great importance is particularly attached on a clear structuring of the respective topics. Therefore in the following sections, you will find relatively little "text in the form of a novel", but many "main points" and even more matching "sub points". Finally, I don't want to forget to emphasize here that the most effective way to learn a CAD system is a good training course in combination with a matching manual. If you also share this opinion, please have a closer look at my website on the Internet. I wish you a lot of success in working with the Inventor software. 5 Autodesk Inventor 2015 Advanced Course PREFACE TO THE ADVANCED COURSE As mentioned before, my whole training manuals to the Autodesk Inventor 2015 software are divided into three parts. This manual, the so-called "Advanced Course", contains "Part 3". The other two parts of the whole training manuals are included within the so-called "Basic Course". In general, this book should be worked through before the "Advanced Course". The "Tables of Contents" of both books can be downloaded via the website " THE MAIN STRUCTURE OF BOTH BOOKS The highest levels of the contents of both books are shown on the right. In "Part 1" and "Part 2" they do not contain any technical subdivision. The different terms of a 3D system (sketches, features, assemblies,...) are only used below these chapter headings. The repetition of the three main topics "Part Modeling", "Assembly Modeling" and "Drawings" was chosen, so that, first the "simpler" tools and then the "more complex" tools to the same main topic could be explained. Within the chapter "Special Subjects", the topics "Sheet Metal Design", "Weldment Design", "Simple piping...", "More complex Solid Modeling", and "Frame Generator" are discussed. In "Part 3" the aforementioned manner of subdivision was not carried out anymore. Book: Basic Course Part 1 - Introduction - Part Modeling - Assembly Modeling - Drawings Part 2 - Part Modeling - Assembly Modeling - Drawings - Special Subjects Book: Advanced Course Part 3 - Representations and Selection methods - Additional Tools - Skeletal Modeling - Administration and Configuration - Parameters and Libraries - Data Exchange - Splines and Surface Modeling - Tube and Pipe - Cable and Harness - Stress Analysis and Frame Analysis - ilogic - Data Management with Autodesk Vault - Design Accelerator - Adaptivity - Further Display Tools - Presentations - Inventor Studio Inv2015/Advanced Course 3

17 Part 3 Representations and Selection methods 1. REPRESENTATIONS AND SELECTION METHODS Main Topics Design View Representations Selection Priority and Selection methods Level of Detail Representations Positional Representations Note: Copying the exercise files to the hard disk As already described within the Basic Course, before the start of the Inventor, you should copy the exercise files of the book into a folder on your local computer or on your network. Please, do the following: Download a ZIP file from the Internet - go to the main web page of the book: " - choose the following link at the bottom of the page: "Download the exercise files (English)" - first, another web page appears on which the so-called "Book Number" is checked - please enter the "Book Number" (you can find the "Book Number" at the end of each book) - please also enter any password (please remember; to repeat the download if necessary) - then, the web page appears from which the ZIP file can be downloaded - click the link "Course_Inv2015.zip" and save the file in any folder on your local computer or on your network Extract the downloaded ZIP file - after you have downloaded the ZIP file, you can extract the file to any folder (e.g. to "C:\") - only one main folder ("Course") with many subfolders and files will be created. 1.1 DESIGN VIEW REPRESENTATIONS WITHIN ASSEMBLIES In assembly files, you can manage so-called Design View Representations. The following information is saved within a Design View Representation: the view orientation (viewing angle, zoom magnification) and a section view (if present) the component properties Visibility, Enabled, and Appearance the Expanded state or Collapsed state within the browser the Visibility of all objects that can be selected via Ribbon/View/Visibility/Object Visibility/... (Origin Planes, - Axes, - Points, User Work Planes, - Axes, - Points, 2D Sketches, 3D Sketches, Welds, Weldment Symbols, UCS Triad, - Planes, - Axes, - Points (prerequisite: the objects themselves must be switched on)). Design View Representation can be used for the following purposes: to control the views within an assembly (IAM) - during the work within an assembly - or when opening an assembly - Options... button within the Open dialog box (right figure) - or when placing components - Options... button within the Place Component dialog box (left figure) - or when choosing (linking) a Representation of a subassembly within a parent assembly - Browser/IM_Nozzle side:1/representations/ RMB/Representation... (right figure) to control the views within a drawing (IDW); only the Visibility and the Appearance of the components are considered (are evaluated) - via the option Representation/View/... while executing the Base View command or via the option.../rmb/apply Design View... from the context menu of existing drawing views to control the views within a presentation (IPN); only the Visibility and the Appearance of the components are considered (are evaluated). - via the Options... button while executing the Create View command. Inv2015/Advanced Course 15

18 Representations and Selection methods Part 3 If desired, Design View Representation can be associatively linked with parent assemblies, drawing files, and presentation files. Note: Positional Representations and Level of Detail Representations As seen in the above dialog boxes, when performing the various actions, you also have access to the other types of Representations. These types are discussed in the following sections. To create or to modify Design View Representation, the following tools are available from the context menu in the browser: on:.../representations/view:... - New: to create a new Design View on: an existing Design View - Delete, Activate, Copy - Copy to LevelofDetail - see the following section Level of Detail Representations - Lock - if a Design View is locked, changes within this Design View are no longer saved - Camera View - Save Current Camera - on the one hand, the current view is saved as so-called "Current Camera" in the current Design View - on the other hand, the "default saving a Design View when leaving the Design View" (option Autosave Camera) is switched off - after any change of a view, then leaving the Design View, and then activating the Design View again, the last (saved) Camera View is always displayed - Restore Saved Camera - the previously saved Camera View (of the respective Design View) is restored - Autosave Camera - the "default saving a Design View when leaving the Design View" is activated again - the last saved Camera View can still be restored until leaving the Design View - All Visible, All Hidden: the Visibility of all occurrences is switched on or off - Remove Appearance Overrides: all Appearance Overrides are removed (like the Clear/Select All tool). When creating or modifying a Design View Representation, you should note the following order: first: the Design View Representation must be created or activated then: the changes to the view can be done - e.g. the Visibility of multiple components can be switched off. Exercise 1-1: Do the following: Open the assembly "IM_Nozzle side.iam" (Folder: "...\3_Part3\IM_Injection mold") - Create a new Design View Representation - Create the Design View - Browser/Representations/View:.../New - Rename a Design View -.../View1/(click the name twice)/without_sn 16 Inv2015/Advanced Course
