1 WORKSHOP 6 LOCATION: POSITIONS AND CHECKLINES Positions and checklines Orientation concern imaginary spatial movement. Positions and checklines concern taking different viewpoints. When you use scale-models you can imagine that you take different viewpoints to look at something, in order to describe what can be seen from these different viewpoints or then is invisible. We call this view change The idea is to mentally place yourself in someone else s viewpoint to imagine what someone else can see from his position. These kinds of experiences make children conscious of the relationship between their personal viewpoint and the spatial position of objects. What do you need? Green A4-paper, 'worldgame materials on the farm. A show-box with 5 peep holes, 12 Blocks. 1
2 POSITIONS 1: ON THE FARM - SCENE 1 What do you need? Green A4-paper, Wereldspel materials 'on the farm. The boy, the girl, the lady and the man have taken a picture of the rabbit hutch, the kennel and the wheelbarrow. Put the rabbit hutch, the kennel and the wheelbarrow in the right position on the green A4 paper. Put the boy, the girl, the lady and the man in the place they were when they took their picture. The picture made by the boy The picture made by the girl The picture made by the woman The picture made by the man What was your reasoning? How can you make this exercise easier, or more challenging? Create your own exercise with pictures 'on the farm' on the work sheet and have it solved by a colleague. Discuss the solution. 2

4 POSITIONS 2: DE SHOW-BOX - SCENE 2 A show-box with 5 peep holes. In de show-box is a building of blocks. Blocks in de show-box What do you need? A show-box with five peep holes in the sides and the cover. De show-box is high enough to stack three blocks inside. You can make the show-box yourself with cardboard and sticky tape or from an old cardboard box from the supermarket. Approximately 12 blocks, cubes. Green A4-paper. Activity? Build the building of blocks in the show-box. Check together whether the building is correct on all sides. Rule: always place the blocks with at least one full side against each other. What was your reasoning? Create your own exercise with a building of blocks in a show-box with 5 holes in the worksheet and have the exercise solved by a colleague Discuss the solution. 4
