The Retreat 3 A picture is worth a thousand words Napoleon Bonaparte The CAD Academy Permission to copy
A picture is worth a thousand words. Working with a 3D BIM model leaves no doubt in our clients mind as to how the project will turn out. We can also produce a virtual walk-through. In this exercise we will continue with the RETREAT project and create a rendering of The RETREAT for the Design Review Committee. Please open ArchiCAD and the RETREAT drawing plan. SELECT the 1 ST FLOOR. Select MORE at the bottom of the TOOLBOX Select CAMERA
Page - 2 Select CAMERA in the INFO BOX and then select SUN and SET CITY. Notice how you can have the shadows be exactly as they would be in your area. If your city is not in the list you can find the latitude and longitude and set for your city. Notice that you can name the camera and change height, distance, etc. of the camera. To have a place to start we will use the default. Close the camera box. Select 1 st pick for the position of the camera and then the 2 nd pick for the direction or where the camera is looking
Page - 3 Select the CAMERA you just put in by double clicking on it in the NAVIGATOR. Not bad for a 1 st try. Place three more cameras. The more you place the longer it will take to render. You can preview what will be seen by selecting the INDIVIDUAL CAMERA in the navigator. Go to the DOCUMENT pull-down. Select CREATIVE IMAGING then CREATE FLY- THROUGH
Page - 4 Select SHOW for a quick LOW RESOLUTION PREVIEW of your Fly- Through. You can now MOVE your cameras, adjust the height, etc. or place more cameras. Try placing one more camera to move into the interior. Please note to edit an existing camera go to the arrow and edit by selecting a grip or the properties on the info box. Select MESH to add a few finishing touches to our project Change the value in to current story to minus 2 or -2 so that the ground is below the building This adds ground to our project.
Page - 5 Verify in the INFO BOX that the box is select. Hint: If you don t get the info box information or any other function you have selected you may have something accidently in the SELECT or HIGHLIGHTED mode and the program thinks you want to work with that data. Press esc twice to clear and select mesh again. Make the largest box you can and then go to GENERIC PREVIEW in the NAVIGATOR to check it out. Go to SLAB in the TOOLBOX and create a front entry by using the two picks as shown.
Page - 6 Go to OBJECTS in the TOOLBOX and SEARCH for TREE. The GREEN colored TREES are 3D. Select a tree to insert. Place only 3 or 4 trees as they increase rendering time and all we want is an illusion of a green and inviting scene. a P Check out the scene by going to the DOCUMENT PULL-DOWN and selecting PHOTORENDER PROJECTION.
Page - 7 In order to have interior lighting, except that which is coming from the windows, you need to add a LAMP. Go to the TOOLBOX and select LAMP to add some overall or ambient light in the kitchen area. We will take the DEFAULT settings for now. This will brighten the kitchen area in our rendering. Select the kitchen for lighting.
Page 8 A couple of other setting we might change would be in the settings. Use the Lightworks engine, as it is a very powerful RAY TRACING rendering engine. It computes how the light bounces off or reflects on surfaces. You can add a background here of a picture you took on your digital camera or phone and use it for the background. One thing I always do is brighten the overall settings and apply.
Page - 9 Go to the document PULL-DOWN and SELECT CREATIVE IMAGING and then FLY-THROUGH. Select PHOTORENDERING WINDOW and then SAVE. The project will then start to render out. Make sure you know where your QuickTime movie file is being created. I would suggest that be started at the end of class or before a break as it will take some time to render out. Obviously a lot more goes into rendering and fly-troughs, but if this interests you there are jobs out there for creative artists who do renderings. It is not DIFFICULT to do a SUN STUDY and you might experiment with that as well. One might discover the setting sun making an energy impact on a window. ArchiCAD is a very complete package and does an excellent job from 2D construction drawings to rendering. Lesson is complete
