Assignment #4: Creating New Layouts & Slides 1 In this lesson we will turn your database into a slideshow. You could make a slideshow out of the current layout, but you may want to create a different layout with only a few fields and larger text. So we will make a new layout first. Go to Layout > New Layout. You can click Standard to start over with a new layout (like in Assignment #2). But you could save time by choosing Duplicate. Then it creates a copy of your previous layout. Give it a name (like Slideshow ) Type a name for your layout here Choose Duplicate to copy your layout settings (fonts, colors) 2 If you chose Duplicate, your database looks exacly the same, but you know you are in the new layout because it appears at the bottom of the Layout list. Now go to Layout > Layout You should see your new layout here.
3 In Layout, you can change fonts, colors, placement of objects just as you did in Assignment #2. So I will not repeat those here. But I will explain a few different ways to change the Layout. In the Toolbox at the bottom there are several ways you can change the look of your database. Click on an object first (like a text box or a shape), then you can change the fill color and border by clicking the various buttons described below. Click here to change the fill color Click here to change the border color Click here to change the text color You can give your fill color a pattern. You fill a shape with wallpaper. You can fill a shape with a gradient You can also change the size of the borders or eliminate borders
4 You can even get more customization by clicking on Window > Show Accents Here you can change the fill, line, and text colors Each of these tabs gives you another way to change the color, pattern, wallpaper, gradient, and borders If you click on the wallpaper or gradient tabs, you can pick different palettes
5 You can also double click on a gradient to change the colors and angle of the gradient Change the angle of the gradient here Pick the colors for your gradient here 6 For my example I just changed the background to black. Back in Layout, you can double click a text box to get this menu where you can change the font, size, and color of the text another way.
7 If you click once on a text box (just so it s selected), you can go to Format and change the Alignment to be Centered 8 So after I (1) deleted some fields, (2) moved and resized fields, (3) changed colors and fonts, my layout looks like this: I changed the title I changed the font of the name field I changed the fill color of my picture field I changed the background color I deleted the Gender and Group fields
9 To see how your database looks in the new layout, go back to Layout > Browse 10 Let s turn this new layout into a slideshow. Go to Window > Slideshow You can adjust settings for the slideshow in this window Click Loop and Advance to make your slideshow play automatically, otherwise you will need to advance slides with the arrow keys. Click Start to start your slideshow.
11 Press Esc to exit the slideshow. If you decide you want to edit your layouts, go to Layout > Edit Layouts. Choose your layout from the list and click Modify (or Delete if you want to get rid of it) 12 I wanted to change the name of Layout 1 to something more descriptive like Class Info
13 Now when you click on Layout, you will see your changes in the Layout list All your layouts will be listed here 14 Create and save at least one new layout. Save your database in Browse View. Then send it as an attachment to me at If you need any help with the directions, you may want to watch some of the videos where I demonstrate each step: You are free to me with your questions, or you may want to post your questions on the class discussion board: The example created in this lesson can also be downloaded and viewed at: You ve succeeded in creating new layouts and making a slideshow. In the next assignment you will make a new layout and create a slideshow. I look forward to hearing from you!
