1 SMS Featured Icons: Editor Window This document includes a brief description of the tools in the SMS Desktop Software Editor windows, as well as showing you the toolbar shortcuts to easily access these features. Main Toolbar The reset cursor, zoom tools, pan and measure tools all function in the editor window in the same way as they do in the main mapping toolbar- as described in the Mapping Toolbar document. Edit Selected Object(s) Clicking this tool after selecting an object(s) in the main editor window will open the Row Editor dialog where selected attributes and properties can be added, edited and deleted. This dialog contains the Data Grid Tools which are described later in the document. Manage Reference Layers Clicking this tool will allow changes to be made to mapped reference layers. In this window the currently mapped attribute, transparency, and other layer specific settings can be changed. This is also where the internet based backgrounds, notes, and contour lines can be toggled on or off. Undo Button Clicking this tool will undo the last action. Clicking on this tool multiple times will undo all subsequent changes that were made. Redo Button Clicking this tool will redo the last action. Clicking on this tool multiple times will redo all subsequent changes that were made. Selection Types 1
2 The Select Object and Selection Intersection types both function in the editor window in the same way as they do in the main mapping toolbar- as described in the Mapping Toolbar document. Select SubObjects Using Select SubObjects allows users to select individual or multiple sub objects in the active map layer. This selection type is useful for selecting inner boundaries or polygons instead of selecting an entire object. Select Vertex Using Select Vertex allows users to select individual or multiple vertices on the active map layer. This selection type allows for individual vertices to be moved or deleted. Action Tools Select Tools The Select Point, Rectangle, Polygon, Circle, Ellipse, Filter, and Invert Selection tools all function in the editor window in the same way as they do in the main mapping toolbar- as described in the Mapping Toolbar document. Select Vertex Clicking on this tool will allow users to select and move, or delete, individual vertices. Select All Clicking on this tool will select all objects in the currently mapped layer. Add New Tools All of the tools contained in the Add New options dialog allow users to manually draw or add new polygons, circles, ellipses, vertices or freehand polygons/polylines to the currently mapped layer. After selecting the appropriate tool, left click to begin adding new objects to the map. Add Vertex, Freehand Polygon, and Freehand Line are only available in the Generic Editor. 2
3 Assign Values Tools When in the Prescription or Field Crop Plan editor windows the Assign Values tools allows users to modify the values assigned to the objects in the mapped layer. Snap Tools Paint Rate When selected, the Paint Rate tool allows users to modify the values assigned to the grids in the mapped prescription layer using the rates available in the legend. This tool is only available in the Prescription Editor. Erase Rate When selected, the Erase Rate tool allows users to remove areas of the mapped prescription layer so that they are not included in the mapped layer. This tool is only available in the Prescription Editor. Assign Rate/Assign Products When selected, the Assign Rate tool allows users to fill in a specified object with a new rate or product available in the legend. When working with a contoured map, this Assign Value tool is the only one available. The Snap Tools provide the ability to snap your cursor on the map, based on the current select or add tool to another spatial object. Various snap tools are available including snap center, snap endpoint, snap start point, snap closest point/closest vertex, snap midpoint and distance. To release a snap tool so that you can move the cursor away from the object, hold the Shift key down on the keyboard. The Snap Tools can be used in conjunction with other tools, such as Add Freehand Polygon. Using the Snap Tools while adding new objects to the currently mapped layer will allow users to create new objects, such as adding a buffer to an existing field boundary, that is automatically snapped to the field edge. 3

Installed and Tile Plan Editors The tile editors have additional tools and windows that allow you to view and adjust various tile settings. The elevation profile is unique to tile runs. This window will show you a side profile of the selected run and includes, if present, where other runs connect into the selected run, as well as the specific tile details on the right. Note: This will show minimum, target, and maximum depth when viewing a tile plan. 14
15 Installed Tile Editor Assign Tile Section/Run* Clicking this tool allows you to set the drainage width, assigned tile type and tile product for the selected tile. Select one or more tile runs in order to use this tool. Alternatively, you can select a single run and use the Edit Tile Section/Run field, (located in the lower left editor) to edit these values. Merge Tile Runs Clicking this tool allows you to merge two selected tile runs. The selected runs must be in line in order for this tool to work. Divide Run Clicking this tool allows you to divide a single run. Once the tool is selected, place the cursor in the location where you would like to place the divide and click to complete. Tile Plan Editor 3D Map Tools* Clicking on the Show/Hide 3D View tool will allow you to view the mapped field and tile in 3D. You can also add tile in this view. The Reset Map Rotation resets the map back to the original orientation. *Unique to Tile Plan Editor The tile plan editor also has unique and new tools. Add Main Clicking this tool allows you to add a new tile main, your first click will be the tile outlet. 15
16 Add Tile Submain Clicking this tool allows you to add a new submain to an existing main. Add Tile Lateral Clicking this tool allows you to add a new tile lateral. In order to use this tool you must first click on an existing main, submain, or lateral. Once the like is drawn, you can choose to create a single run or multiples based on the original line. Add Run Extension Clicking this tool allows you to add an extension to existing tile runs. Note: Users can select a vertex within a run and click and drag to adjust placement without having to recreate the line. Also, holding the shift key will snap in 5 degree increments and ctrl will extend a straight line from the last two vertices. Assign Tile Section/Run Clicking this tool allows you to set the drainage width, assigned tile type, and tile product for the selected tile. Select one or more tile runs in order to use this tool. Alternatively, you can select a single run and use the Edit Tile Section/Run field, (located in the lower left in the editor), to edit those values. Copy Run Clicking this tool allows you to copy a selected run. Move Run Clicking this tool allows you to move a selected run. Optimize/Trim Run Clicking this tool allows you to check a run and either try to apply an optimization or suggest a length for the run that is viable and then trim it to that length. 16
17 Tile Sizing After you have added all the laterals to a main, start by selecting the main and select this tool to optimize your tile sizing. This tool will use the tile plan parameters and optimize the tile for the Minimum Drainage Coefficient for each span sized. The dialog will automatically populate the Tile to Use if the required tile had previously been created. Click Add Tile Product to create required tile products and select them to complete the dialog. To reduce the number of different tile sizes, you can select a row, and Merge with the row above it. After sizing is done, run the Validate Tile Plan tool to ensure all offsets are still in place. Validate Tile Plan Clicking this tool runs a check against all runs to verify whether they all meet logic and parameters that have been set for tiling. SMS is checking that runs that have a positive flowing solution, have a connection that is between the min/max depth settings, have correctly sized tile for the area/grade/desired drainage coefficient, are above the (potential) run they are connected to, and runs a velocity check to ensure that the grade of tile at the target depth will not result in tile silting in due to being too shallow, or erosion of the tile bed due to being too steep. Runs that are not valid will be highlighted in yellow, and once the run is selected, the specific issues will be shown in the lower left. Tile Planning Preferences Clicking this tool allows you to define specific tile planning preferences (min/max/target depth, connection offset, drainage coefficient, etc.) that will be used when creating new runs. Divide Run Clicking this tool allows you to divide a single run. Once the tool is selected, place the cursor in the location where you would like to place the divide and click to complete. Divide Multiple Runs Clicking this tool allows you to draw a line across multiple tile runs to divide them. When this tool is used, it will divide the run and select the non-outlet side of the tile run, for the user to delete if desired. 17
Reset Cursor Tool Clicking on the Reset Cursor tool will clear all map and tool selections and allow tooltips to be displayed.
