Explanatory Notes When a mathematical model has been verified and is being re-analyzed, use of these commands can save time for the analyst In order to ensure the desired result, the ECHO commands should typically be the first commands entered in an input data file for APES The keywords associated with the ECHO commands have the following meaning: ECHO ALL ON : echo print all of the categories listed below This command supersedes all previous ECHO commands that may have been issued ECHO ALL OFF : do not echo print any of the categories listed below This command supersedes all previous ECHO commands that may have been issued This is the default case DIAGNOSTICS : pertains to diagnostic information associated with element attributes The default for this command is OFF DIMENSIONS : pertains to the maximum dimensions specified by the analyst for dynamically dimensioned arrays The default for this command is ON ELEMENTS : pertains to element data such as node numbers, material number, integration rule, etc The default for this command is ON ELEMENT MAX AVG STRAIN : pertains to the printing of maximum values of the average strain components (for a given element) over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step This command is particularly useful for elements possessing more than one quadrature point for the computation of secondary dependent variables (eg, Q8P0, Q9P0, Q9P3 elements, etc) The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MAX AVG STRESS : pertains to the printing of maximum values of the average stress components (for a given element) over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step This command is particularly useful for elements possessing more than one quadrature point for the computation of secondary dependent variables (eg, Q8P0, Q9P0, Q9P3 elements, etc) The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MAX AVG VOL STRAIN : pertains to the printing of maximum value of the average infinitesimal volumetric strain (for a given element) over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step This command is particularly useful for elements possessing more than one quadrature point for the computation of secondary dependent variables (eg, Q8P0, Q9P0, Q9P3 elements, etc) In addition, the ratio of the absolute value of the maximum average volumetric strain to the absolute value of the minimum non-zero normal strain in the element is printed That is, ε vol min (ε 11, ε 22, ε 33 ) ; min (ε 11, ε 22, ε 33 ) This ratio is instructive in the assessment of mixed and mixed/penalty elements used to simulate material response in the incompressible limit Under the default condition the volumetric strain and the aforementioned ratio are not computed and printed 3 V N Kaliakin

ELEMENT MIN AVG STRAIN : pertains to the printing of minimum value of the average strain components (for a given element) over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step This command is particularly useful for elements possessing more than one quadrature point for the computation of secondary dependent variables (eg, Q8P0, Q9P0, Q9P3 elements, etc) The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MIN AVG STRESS : pertains to the printing of minimum values of the average stress components (for a given element) over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step This command is particularly useful for elements possessing more than one quadrature point for the computation of secondary dependent variables (eg, Q8P0, Q9P0, Q9P3 elements, etc) The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MIN AVG VOL STRAIN : pertains to the printing of minimum value of the average infinitesimal volumetric strain (for a given element) over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step This command is particularly useful for elements possessing more than one quadrature point for the computation of secondary dependent variables (eg, Q8P0, Q9P0, Q9P3 elements, etc) In addition, the ratio of the absolute value of the minimum average volumetric strain to the absolute value of the minimum non-zero normal strain in the element is printed That is, ε vol min (ε 11, ε 22, ε 33 ) ; min (ε 11, ε 22, ε 33 ) 0 This ratio is instructive in the assessment of mixed and mixed/penalty elements used to simulate material response in the incompressible limit Under the default condition the volumetric strain and the aforementioned ratio are not computed and printed ELEMENT MAX PRESSURE : pertains to the printing of maximum pore pressure over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step For elements containing more than one pressure degree of freedom in the element (eg, the Q9P3d and T7P3d elements), the average of these values is used in determining the maximum value over all the elements The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MAX STRAIN : pertains to the printing of maximum values of the strain components over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MAX STRESS : pertains to the printing of maximum values of the stress components over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MAX VOL STRAIN : pertains to the printing of the maximum value of the infinitesimal volumetric strain over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT TOT VOL STRAIN : pertains to the printing of the total average value of the infinitesimal volumetric strain (ε vol tot ) over all elements present in the mesh in a particular 4 V N Kaliakin

solution step This option is typically used for analyses in the incompressible limit, where the volumetric strain is going to zero within the solution domain In addition, the following domain volumetric strain ratio is computed: ε dvst = ε vol tot ( (ε11 ) max ) 2 + (ε 22 ) 2 + (ε 33 ) 2 The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MIN PRESSURE : pertains to the printing of minimum pore pressure over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step For elements containing more than one pressure degree of freedom in the element (eg, the Q9P3d and T7P3d elements), the average of these values is used in determining the minimum value over all the elements The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MIN STRAIN : pertains to the printing of minimum values of the strain components over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MIN STRESS : pertains to the printing of minimum values of the stress components over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step The default for this command is OFF ELEMENT MIN VOL STRAIN : pertains to the printing of the minimum value of the infinitesimal volumetric strain over all elements present in the mesh in a particular solution step The default for this command is OFF FUNCTIONS : pertains to history function information The default for this command is ON GRAVITY : pertains to information associated with the gravitational acceleration The default for this command is ON INITIAL : pertains to the specification of the initial material state of elements The default for this command is ON MATERIALS : pertains to material idealizations The default for this command is ON NODAL MAXIMUMS : pertains to the printing of maximum values of primary dependent (nodal) variables (eg, displacements, temperatures, etc) The default for this command is OFF NODAL MINIMUMS : pertains to the printing of minimum values of primary dependent (nodal) variables (eg, displacements, temperatures, etc) The default for this command is OFF NODES : pertains to nodal coordinates The default for this command is ON NONLINEAR : pertains to information related to nonlinear solutions command is ON The default for this 5 V N Kaliakin

OPTIONS : pertains to general solution options (not including DIMENSIONS, GRAVITY or NONLINEAR information) The default for this command is ON PERMEABILITY : pertains to the permeability information The default for this command is ON SCREEN PRINT : pertains to the printing of the increment number and number of iterations used in a given solution step to the user s screen during the course of a solution In very long analyses, time can be saved by setting this echo flag to OFF The default for this command is ON SPECIFICATIONS : pertains to nodal specifications The default for this command is ON TITLE : pertains to the descriptive alphanumeric information associated with a solution The default for this command is ON TRANSFORMATIONS : pertains to coordinate transformation information The default for this command is ON WARNINGS : pertains to warning messages that are printed in the course of evaluating element attributes The default for this command is ON 6 V N Kaliakin

Example of Command Usage If an echo print of the gravity information and initial state information associated with element definitions is not desired, enter the commands: echo grav off echo initial off 7 V N Kaliakin
