JumpStart to Second Grade Math Here are some math problems you and your child can work through over the summer. The items listed below are examples; feel free to change the numbers to have a continuous list of problems ready at your finger tips. *Please note that these are only a few types of problems that third graders see. There is plenty more to come. This is just to help you get started or have a jumpstart to third grade. Texas Essential of Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) will be changing for the next school year by the state of Texas. Below are the current TEKS that 2 nd graders are expected to know during the school year as of right now. If you are interested in what the new ADDED TEKS for 2 nd graders will be please google: 2 nd Grade Math TEKS Problem Solving/Word Problems One-Step and Multi-Step Word problems, with sums or differences up to 1,000, using either: addition or subtraction. Students can draw pictures to help. Example: Olivia baked 17 cookies yesterday and 15 more today. How many cookies did Olivia bake both days? Example: Greyson had 23 toy cars. He lost 8, how many cars does Greyson have left? Example: James made 12 airplanes yesterday and 16 airplanes today. James decided to give away 13 of his airplanes to his friends. How many airplanes does he have left? Fact Fluency Practice both addition and subtraction math facts up to 20. This is very important in order to be successful in all areas of mathematics. Use a timer to help increase fluency.
Place Value Ones, Tens, Hundreds, and Thousands Place (up to 1,200) Be able to go back and forth between different forms of writing numbers. 1. Standard Form: 1, Expanded Form: 1, Word Form: one thousand, one hundred eighty-five Comparing and Ordering Numbers 1. 1,100> Greatest to Least: 654, 546, Least to Greatest: 456, 546, 654 Locate the position of whole numbers on a number line Example:
Fractions Parts of a whole and parts of a set Name Parts: halves, fourths, eighths, using words How many parts are equal to a whole? Example: ¼ Shaded 1/5 Shaded ¾ Unshaded 4/5 Unshaded 1. Jane had 3 red marbles, 7 blue marbles, and 2 yellow marbles. What fraction of the marbles are yellow? Answer: 2/12 2. What fraction of the utensils are forks? Spoons? Counting Money Counting a collection of coins up to a dollar Use the cent symbol, dollar sign, and decimal point to name the value of a collection of coins $
Addition and Subtraction Select addition or subtraction and use operation to solve problems up to 1,000 Students should be able to regroup both in addition and subtraction. *Subtraction across zeroes is a tough skill to master (practice, practice) 1. Within a word problem 2, , Multiplication and Division Model and create multiplication situations in which equivalent sets of concrete objects are joined. Model and create division situations in which a set of concrete objects is separated into equivalent sets.
Odd/Even Numbers Determine odd or even numbers (look at the ones place) Example: odd even Rounding and Estimating Round whole numbers to the nearest ten 1. Round 84 to the nearest ten = 80 Patterns Solve problems using whole numbers , 131, 134,, 140 Rule: Add 3 2., 37, 34,, 28 Rule: Subtract 3
Geometry and Spatial Reasoning 2-D (names of shapes, number of sides and vertices) and 3-D objects by their attributes (vertices, edges, faces), congruent 2-D Figures, lines of symmetry Measurement pyramid Faces (flat surfaces): 5 Edges (where the faces meet): 8 Vertices (corners/where edges meet): 5 Length, area, perimeter, weight/mass, and capacity 1. Measure objects at home to the nearest: ¼ inch, ½ inch, ¾ inch, and whole inch 2. Measure objects to the whole centimeter 3. Estimate which length would be best to pick from when measuring: centimeters, inches, yards, meters, miles 4. Find the weight and mass of objects using a scale (use scales, kitchen scales, pan balance (with weights using grams). 5. Pour liquid into containers using measuring cups. Know Gallons, quarts, pints, cups. How many does each take to make a gallon? Make a gallon man (look up on internet). 6. Find the Perimeter (add up all the side) of a polygon :
7. Find the area (inside-number all square units) of a 2-D figure: Time and Temperature Be able to read time to the: minute, five minute, half hour, and hour. Be able to distinguish between a.m. and p.m. Read a thermometer in both F and C. 6:45 p.m. 76 F 24 C
Graphing Be able to interpret information (answer questions) from both bar and pictographs Probabilty How likely is something to happen? Most likely, least likely, equally likely, impossible, or certain. Example: Take a bag of M&M s, colored popcubes, coins, marbles, etc In a bag put 8 red marbles, 5 blue marbles, and 1 yellow marbles. Pull out one marble at a time 20 times (put back in bag) and keep a tally chart of the results. Discuss
Personal Financial Literacy Calculate how money saved accumulates, saving is better than spending, distinguish between deposits and withdrawals, responsible and irresponsible borrowing, differentiate between producers and consumers and calculate the cost to produce a simple item Example: Open a bank account with your child. Deposit allowance earned in a savings account or piggy bank etc. Calculate money earned, saved, used.
