Sirona Dental Systems GmbH 11 Performing 3D acquisition Rotational scan 11 Performing 3D acquisition 11.1 Rotational scan Field of application Rotational scans are used exclusively for single tooth restorations where no data from the neighboring tooth is required for the design. This primarily involves scans of basic crown frameworks Acquisition technique During a rotational scan, 8 individual views of a preparation are captured consecutively. After each image, the preparation is turned by 45. The user software combines these individual views and reconstructs a 3D model of the object Preparing a rotational scan 1. Use modeling clay to fix the single tooth preparation in the model holder that best matches the restoration size. Preparing a preparation Make sure that the insertion axis of the preparation is as parallel as possible to the symmetry axis of the model holder and the single tooth preparation is located roughly in the center of the model holder. If you do not use any of the materials specified on the material list (see Creating a new restoration [ 56]), the surface of your preparation must be coated with powder or scan spray: Cover the surface of the preparation with a thin and even coat of powder or scan spray. Do not powder the compound in the model holder. Remove any powder that may have been deposited on the compound. 2. Push the model holder with the preparation into the stepping motor coupling as far as it will go. Distal = facing the column D

For a new single tooth restoration, select the "Crown" button, the corresponding design technique, and the relevant tooth. 56 D

Sirona Dental Systems GmbH 11 Performing 3D acquisition Rotational scan 2. Click the "OK" button. 3. Select the material you want to use from the list. If none of the materials listed in the table corresponds to your material, select "Powder/Scanspray". Powder/scan spray If this is the case, make sure to cover the preparation surface with a light, even coat of powder or scan spray. Material from the list If you use one of the materials from the list, it is not necessary to apply powder or scan spray. 4. Click the "OK" button. 5. Click the icon. The live image mode starts. 6. Use the rotary knobs to move the vertical unit of the "ineos" until the maximum plane of sharp focus is located approximately halfway between the edge of the preparation and the highest tip of the restoration and the preparation lies completely inside the image field. Realign the preparation if necessary If these settings are not possible, the preparation must be repositioned in the model holder (see Preparing a rotational scan [ 55]). D

11 Performing 3D acquisition Sirona Dental Systems GmbH Rotational scan 7. Select the desired acquisition technique for single tooth preparation. Presetting Rotation is preset for single tooth "Crown" preparations. 8. Click the "Acquire" button. Double-click the Start button. The rotational scan starts. The rotational scan is performed automatically. When the scan sequence has been completed, the individual views are combined in the user software, where they then can be used to reconstruct a 3D model and for further processing (see document inlab 3D Operator s Manual ). Error messages Severe misfocusing or the use of a restoration material that is not suitable for the acquisition technique may cause errors when the individual views are combined in the user software, which will then be indicated accordingly. In this case you must eliminate the error source and repeat the rotational scan. 58 D

Sirona Dental Systems GmbH 11 Performing 3D acquisition Top view scan 11.2 Top view scan Field of application For all types of restorations Acquisition technique During top view scan, a random number of individual views of a preparation is captured consecutively. After each image, you must move the preparation on the XY table by one guide groove in the X or Y direction and refocus the camera. The individual views are combined to form an overall image in the user software. You may also take additional detail views (detail scan), which are then assigned to the corresponding positions of the top view scan in the user software. The top view scan is then used to reconstruct a 3D model in the user software. Optimal number of individual views Take only as many individual views as are actually needed for the subsequent design. That way, you can shorten the scan sequence and minimize the time required for image processing Preparation Avoid image artifacts. To avoid image artifacts, seal any saw cuts that may be present with powdered wax or other modeling materials suitable for scanning. Material not on the material list If you do not use any of the materials specified on the material list to create your model, you must cover the preparation surface with a light, even coat of powder or scan spray Information on preparing models for implants A master model with manipulation implants is available. 1. If no CAM base was used, prepare the area surrounding each implant situation with powder or scan spray. 2. Plug a scanbody onto each manipulation implant of the master model until it comes to rest on the shoulder of the implant without any gaps. The scanbody is scannable without powder or scan spray. D

11 Performing 3D acquisition Sirona Dental Systems GmbH Top view scan Preparing top view scans Preparing a top view scan A B Restoration axis Front When fixing the preparation, make sure that... the incisors of the preparation as well as two of the guide balls on the shifting plate are facing toward the front side, the scan axis is perpendicular to the preparation, if possible, the restoration axis (A) is pointing directly at the "ineos" post toward the rear. If this is not observed here, the 3D model can subsequently be rotated in the software when setting the insertion axis so that the designations mesial, distal, buccal and lingual are all located in the correct position. If the 3D model is tilted, an unnecessarily large block may be required to mill the preparation. the restoration does not "rise" on the model. Within the possibilities offered by the insertion axis of the model, the model stumps of a restoration should all be as close to the same height as possible during the scan. This can also be corrected in the software later on when setting the insertion axis. An unfavorable setting leads to unnecessarily large block requirements when milling restorations. There are two ways for you to fix the preparation for the scan: Use modeling clay to fix the preparation on the shifting plate (without the model holder). Place the preparation on the shifting plate with the model holder: 60 D

Sirona Dental Systems GmbH 11 Performing 3D acquisition Top view scan Placing the preparation on the shifting plate with the model holder The incisors of the model must be facing the two threaded pins (i.e., toward the front side). 1. Clamp the preparation into the model holder by adjusting the clamping slide with the Allen key. 2. Loosen screw (A), move the preparation to the desired position and secure it in place by tightening the screw again. A B Screw Front D

11 Performing 3D acquisition Sirona Dental Systems GmbH Top view scan How to position the shifting plate on the XY table A B Shifting plate XY table For a top view scan, the shifting plate must be placed in different positions on the XY table. The XY table (B) and the shifting plate (A) are designed in such a way that the plate must be positioned on the table within a predefined grid. Positioning the plate outside the guide grooves is not allowed and will lead to scan errors. The shifting plate must lock in place Please make sure that the shifting plate always engages exactly in the guide grooves during positioning. Overview image Always move the shifting plate only by one groove in the X or Y direction during a scan sequence. As long as the consecutive views of a scan sequence are located directly beside each other, these individual views are automatically combined by the user software to form a single overview image (see "Acquisition technique" [ 55]). If this is not the case, the individual views must be manually pieced together by the user in the software like a puzzle. 62 D

Sirona Dental Systems GmbH 11 Performing 3D acquisition Top view scan 1. Position the shifting plate with the preparation on the xy table of the "ineos" first scan position: The incisors of the preparation are facing toward the front side, two of the guide balls on the shifting plate are facing toward the front side. 2. Switch on the "ineos" and the PC. 3. Start the user software (see the chapter entitled Switching on the system [ 40]). The Ready LED lights up continuously as soon as the "ineos" is ready for operation Creating a new restoration Creating a new restoration Further information See also the document InLab 3D Operator s Manual. 1. Click "Restoration"/"New " in the user software. The "Select patient for new restoration" menu opens. 2. Select a patient. Create a new patient (see document entitled "inlab 3D Operator s Manual") and click the "OK" button. 3. Click the "OK" button to confirm the selected patient. Bridge 1. 64 11 Performing 3D acquisition Sirona Dental Systems GmbH Top view scan 3. 6. Adjust the height of the "ineos" vertical unit with the rotary knobs until the preparation in the first position is sharply focused in the live image Performing a top view scan 1. Select the desired acquisition technique for the preparation. Presetting Rotational scan is preset for single tooth "Crown" preparations. You may also take additional detail views in order to complete the top view scan (see the section entitled Detail scans [ 65]). 2. Click the button marked "Acquire". 3. Move the shifting plate by one guide groove in x or y direction. The first image of the sequence is displayed in the user software. The shifting plate must lock in place Please make sure that the shifting plate always engages exactly in the guide grooves during positioning. 64 D

Sirona Dental Systems GmbH 11 Performing 3D acquisition Top view scan 4. Click the button marked "Acquire". The second image of the sequence is displayed in the user software and is combined with the first image (see also the document inlab 3D Operator s Manual ). 5. Repeat this procedure until all of the required restoration data has been scanned. 3. scan 5. scan Check the insertion axis Now the captured data can be used by the software to reconstruct a 3D model for further processing (see document inlab 3D Operator s Manual ). When setting the insertion axis, make sure that buccal and lingual are located on the correct side of the restoration (see also inlab 3D Operator's Manual, chapter entitled "Redefining the insertion axis") Detail scans You can take a detail scan of a certain preparation detail and add it to the overview image. 1. Via the user software, select the acquisition technique "Additional image". D

11 Performing 3D acquisition Sirona Dental Systems GmbH Top view scan 2. Position the preparation and adjust the height of the "ineos" vertical unit by means of the rotary knobs until the region of interest on the preparation appears in sharp focus in the live image. Maintain this orientation When doing so, do not change the mesio-distal orientation of the preparation. The mesial side must always face the user, the distal side always must face the column. 3. In the user software, click the button marked "Acquire". The image is displayed in the user software and can now be assigned to the corresponding position in the top view scan (see also document inlab 3D Operator s Manual ). 4. Repeat this procedure until all of the required restoration detail data has been scanned. 3D model The captured data can now be reconstructed to form a 3D model and further processed in the software. When setting the insertion axis, make sure that buccal and lingual are located on the correct side of the restoration (see also inlab 3D Operator's Manual, chapter entitled "Redefining the insertion axis"). 66 D

Sirona Dental Systems GmbH 11 Performing 3D acquisition Rotational scan in top view 11.3 Rotational scan in top view Increasing the precision You can increase the precision by combining the top view with one or more rotational images instead of with individual detail scans. This applies especially in the vicinity of preparation borders on tooth stumps serving as bridge abutments Capturing the optical impression 1. Remove the prepared single teeth intended for the rotational scan from the saw-cut model. 2. Place the single teeth in the model holder in succession and align them as coaxial as possible (i.e. ideally the insertion axis would coincide with the rotation axis) as for the individual rotational scan also. 3. Perform the rotational scan (see chapter "Rotational scan" [ 55]). 4. Reassemble the saw-cut model. 5. Align the complete saw-cut model in the holder just as you would for top view scans without a rotational scan. The saw cuts should be filled (e.g. with powdered wax) to prevent needle artifacts, etc., on the cuts. 6. Take the top view scan (see Top view scan [ 59]). 7. After completing all scans, drag the arrowheads of the rotational scans to the locations in the top view where they belong in order to speed up the reconstructions Further information You should insert the model holder with the stump positioned so that the mesio-distal alignment of the single tooth corresponds to the alignment of the complete model (also see Rotational scan [ 55]). This speeds up the calculations. D

11 Performing 3D acquisition Sirona Dental Systems GmbH Notes for scans Take few scans Take as few scans as possible: The program is suitable for any typical applications e.g. for two rotational scans combined with one top view comprising 4-6 individual scans. Whole-jaw scans combined with more than four rotational scans are possible, however, they are not advisable due to the high memory requirements and long calculating times involved. Possibilities for combining scans It is only possible to combine either rotational scans or detail scans with a top view scan Notes for scans Scan models For scanning with the "ineos", we recommend the dentona plasters "CAM Base" and the "esthetic base gold". Use powder or scan spray If you use any other plasters, cover the surface with a light, even coat of powder or scan spray. Otherwise the measuring accuracy will be heavily influenced. When preparing saw-cut models, be careful not to mill off the individual stump segments. Place the model next to the stumps so that the scanner can properly capture these areas. Create only a slight fluting below the preparation margin. Fill the saw cuts either with scan wax or with folded strips of paper prior to scanning. Correcting scan artifacts 1. Select "Design"/"Correct optical impressions..."/"smooth inside" in the user software. 68 D

Sirona Dental Systems GmbH 11 Performing 3D acquisition Notes for scans 2. Mark the area. To do this, start with a double-click near the artifacts and then "lasso" the area with single-clicks. The area is marked. 3. Double-click to smooth the area Possibilities for combining acquisition techniques You can combine different acquisition techniques to scan crown and bridge situations from the model: 1 Top view scan 2 Top view scan + detail scan 3 Top view A + Top view B (A focus on preparation margin, B focus on incisal edge) 4 Rotational scan 5 Top view scan + rotational scan 6 Top view A + top view B + rotational scan Various scan variations are advisable, depending on the stumpf preparation and indication involved: Indication/ preparation Step Groove Tangential Crowns (crown caps) 1, 2, 3, 4 1, 2, 3, 4 4, 5 Bridges 2, 5, 6 2, 5, 6 5 D

11 Performing 3D acquisition Sirona Dental Systems GmbH Notes for scans Combined top view scans for stumps If the anatomical height of the stump exceeds the focal depth range of the scanner's measuring camera, use the combined top view scan (variations 3 and 6). 1. Scan the stump with the preparation margin in focus (A). 2. Scan the stump in the same situation with the incisal edge in focus (B). 3. Place the two images on top of each other in the image catalog via "drag & drop" Refocusing for top view scans of bridges If differences in height have to be compensated due to curvatures of the jaw or stump preparations, you can refocus individual scans of bridge situations for top view scans. The individual images are displayed in the image catalog with varying brightness. 70 D

Sirona Dental Systems GmbH 11 Performing 3D acquisition Notes for scans Scanning bridges with top view and detail scans 1. Scan the complete bridge situation in the top view scan. Scan the bridge situation Make sure that there is a common insertion axis for all abutment teeth. The preparation limits must be visible over the entire circumference of the preparation. 2. Add the detail scans by tilting the model tray. The detail scans must be sharp and must not be blurred. 3. Assign the detail scan to the top view scan in the image catalog. D

11 Performing 3D acquisition Sirona Dental Systems GmbH Notes for scans Scanning bridges with rotational and top view scans Scan the bridge abutments in the rotational scan technique for bridge situations. The more tangential the preparation is, the more important this point becomes. 1. Transfer the individual stumps from the saw-cut model to the crown framework model holder. Be careful to transfer the stump to the model holder so that its position corresponds to the model situation. Alignment The distal side of the stump must face the nose on the edge of the model holder. A B C Distal Mesial Nose on edge of model holder 2. Align the stump to the center of the model holder and move it into the insertion axis. Remove powder/scan spray The filling material must be free of powder or spray so that the scanner captures only the stump. 3. Insert the model holder in the scanner. The nose on the edge of the model holder must face to the rear toward the unit column. 72 D

Sirona Dental Systems GmbH 11 Performing 3D acquisition Notes for scans 4. Take the rotational scan. The image in the image catalog should display only the stump. 5. Assign the rotational scan to the top view scan. D
