Animation Identifying Types of Animation 1
OBJECTIVES l Identify various types of animation l Construct a written planner for a basic flip-book animation l Sketch and assemble a flip-book animation l Construct a diagram/planner for a stop-motion animation. l Capture still-shot images to be used in a stopmotion animation. l Create a computer-generated stop-motion sequence using still-shot images, audio sound effects, and voiceovers. 2
ANIMATION l A collection of images or pictures l Each picture is only slightly different than the one before it l Pictures are displayed in sequential order at a rapid rate, giving an optical illusion of movement l Persistence of Vision l Stare at an object, then close your eyes l You can still see it 3
PERSISTENCE OF VISION l A theory that claims the human eye retains every image, even after the brain has had an opportunity to process the image. l This timing differential causes the brain to connect objects that are stationary. l This phenomena often creates an optical illusion of motion. 4
PERSISTENCE OF VISION l That is why this image seems to spin around l Another type of optical illusion is called a zolotrope: l A display that has two sides l l l l The first picture is on one side A second picture on the opposite side You flip or spin the display quickly from side to side The eye retains each image just long enough for the brain to combine the two images and believe they are one image Image taken from christopher smark.wordpress.com 5
PERSISTENCE OF VISION Zolotrope Empty fishbowl Fish 6
PERSISTENCE OF VISION Zolotrope Didn t flash fast enough? Lets speed it up and see what happens. 7
PERSISTENCE OF VISION Zolotrope Click here to watch another demonstration of zolotrope, bird in cage. 8
TYPES OF ANIMATION Flip-Book l A display that contains many pages, with each page being only slightly different than the next. When the pages are flipped at a rapid rate, the images appear to have movement. Image obtained from generationranks.com 9
TYPES OF ANIMATION Stop-Motion l A display that is created by a series of photos taken of inanimate objects that are physically moved in small increments from one picture to the next 10
TYPES OF ANIMATION Cutout l A type of stopmotion created by using 2-dimensional cut-out figures. Image obtained from 11
TYPES OF ANIMATION Silhouette l A type of cut-out animation in which the scene is backlit so that characters/ objects are only seen as silhouettes Image obtained from 12
TYPES OF ANIMATION Erasure l A type of stopmotion in which the still-shot images are taken over time as an artist manipulates an image. I her I hereby I hereby dec I hereby decree 13
TYPES OF ANIMATION Object Animation l A type of stopmotion animation using inanimate objects such as Lego blocks or Lincoln logs. Image obtained from pikihia.com Image obtained from drtoy.com 14
TYPES OF ANIMATION Claymation l A type of stopmotion in which the characters are made of clay or craft dough so that they may be molded to change shape. Image obtained from contractortalk.com Image obtained from i.ytimg.com 15
EXAMPLES OF ANIMATION l Flip-book: Girl & Bird l Stop-Motion: Post-It Notes l Cut-out: Time Goes By l Silhouette: Elephant & Flower l Erasure: Whiteboard drawing l Object: Lego Arcade l Claymation: Chess game 16
REVIEW l Types of Animation l Flip-book l Stop-Motion l Cut-out l Silhouette l Erasure l Object l Claymation 17
