6 Resolution on new Graduate and Professional Housing Project on Loop Road Whereas, as part of planning for future increases in student enrollment, the University has proposed a housing project on Loop Road with projected rents upwards of $1450 per month, Whereas a majority of graduate students earn less than $2000 dollars per month before taxes, Whereas the project is titled Graduate and Professional Housing, implying accessibility to the graduate and professional student populations at large, Whereas the monthly rent rate for this new housing project exceeds monthly income levels, Whereas lack of access to affordable on-campus housing places Stony Brook University is a competitive disadvantage with regards to graduate student retention/recruitment, Be it resolved that the Graduate Student Organization of Stony Brook University, Urge the Administration to explore avenues for making this housing project accessible to the majority of the graduate student population, for example, rent reductions or stipend increases Recommend that the University Senate and the Graduate Council investigate the new housing project and the need for quality, affordable housing for graduate students, as outlined in previous Five-Year Plans
