2 TUTORIAL: SETTING-UP ATMEL STUDIO 6.2 FOR ARDUINO PROJECTS. Step 1: Installation of Atmel Studio 6.2 (1) Atmel Studio 6.2 is the latest IDE from Atmel - for writing, debugging and testing source codes. It comes with the complete C++ support, including Microsoft Visual Studio and Atmel Jungo USB Driver that will be automatically installed during the setting up process (with internet). (2) Download the Atmel Studio 6.2 (Atmel Studio 6.2 sp2 (build 1563) Installer) from Follow the InstallShield Wizard and answer the step-by-step questions. The setting up process begins with the installation of Microsoft Visual Studio: 1

4 (3) After Microsoft Visual Studio is completely installed, proceed with Atmel Jungo USB Driver installation. 3

6 (4) After the USB driver is successfully installed, the installer wizard is prepared for the remaining setup process. 5

9 (5) Atmel Studio installation is now complete. Click Finish to exit the installer wizard, and launch the Atmel Studio
10 Step 2: Including the Arduino core library. (1) The most important step to build any Arduino projects in Atmel Studio, is to include the Arduino core library. The library is obtained after compiling any sketch(es) in the Arduino IDE. We assume that the Arduino IDE is pre-installed in your PC. (2) Open the Arduino IDE. (3) Turn on the verbose output by selecting File > Preferences > Show verbose output during compilation (check the box). Click OK to proceed. 9
11 (4) Set the Arduino IDE with the same device that you will be using later in the Atmel Studio. Select Tools > Board: and choose the particular device. Note that this example is using the Arduino Uno board. (5) Compile any example sketch, e.g. the Blink example. Select File > Examples > 01.Basics > Blink. Select Verify to compile the sketch. (6) Refer to the output window at the bottom of the Arduino IDE, for the location of the temporary build output. The location should be like: C:\Users\USERPC~1\AppData\Local\Temp\build tmp The Arduino core library is stored in build folder, automatically done by the Arduino IDE once the sketch is compiled. Now, proceed to the next instruction and we will come to this folder again, shortly. 10
12 (7) Immediately open a new Windows Explorer and go to your Atmel Studio 6 folder. The directory should be like: C:\Users\user pc\documents\atmel Studio This is where all your projects are saved by default. Create a new folder named ArduinoCore (or similar) to store the Arduino core library, obtained in the earlier instructions. (8) Copy the temporary build location from the Arduino IDE output window (as in instruction (6)), and paste it in another new Windows Explorer to find it. In build folder, search for core.a this is the Arduino core library that we wanted. Copy core.a and paste it into the ArduinoCore folder previously created in (7). Rename it as libcore.a to make it as a standard library (standard libraries are usually named with libxxxx). Once the library is there, it is reusable for any other project that applies the same device/board. You are now ready to create an Arduino project in the Atmel Studio. Step 3: Creating a new Arduino project in Atmel Studio 6.2. (1) Open the Atmel Studio 6.2. Select File > New > Project 11
13 (2) Select C/C++ GCC C++ Executable Project, and fill up the project details in the next pop-up wizard i.e. Name, Location and Solution name). Click OK to proceed. (3) Next, choose the device type. For instance, the Arduino UNO uses ATmega328P chip. Look under megaavr, 8-bit device family, select and click OK to proceed. 12
14 (4) You can now write your own source code, or copy and paste any <filename>.cpp file to your project s main.cpp file. You have options to either write the source codes in the general C/C++ language, or using Arduino s C/C++ language. Following are the basic Blink examples in both languages: No. Source codes Remarks 1. Source code begins with: #include <avr/io.h> #include <util/delay.h> 2. Source code begins with: #include Arduino.h Step 4: Setting up the compiler and linker. 13
15 (1) We need to setup the compiler and linker before we can build the project. Select Project > yourprojectname Properties (or directly press Alt+F7) and choose Toolchain. (2) At the Configuration, click on the drop-down menu and choose All Configurations. (3) Next is to setup the AVR/GNU C++ Compiler (since we re creating a.cpp project) in the left-hand drop-down menu. Click on Symbols. Here, we have to define symbols for the compiler s information, such as the device s speed and the Arduino software version. Click the green-plus icon and define the symbols, for example: No. Symbol Remark 1. F_CPU = L - The CPU speed is 16 MHz, typically for 5V Arduino boards. - For 3.3V boards, the speed is usually 8MHz. Hence, use F_CPU = L instead. - L means long integer 2. ARDUINO = The Arduino IDE version For version 1.01, use ARDUINO = 101 instead. (4) Proceed with the Directories, still in the same AVR/GNU C++ Compiler menu. Here, we have to add the directories to the Arduino core codes and libraries. This informs the compiler the location of important header files (libraries) that need to be included in Arduino projects, such as Arduino.h, pins_arduino.h, SoftwareSerial.h and others. Click the green-plus icon and include the path, for example: No. Directory Remark 1. C:\Program Files (x86)\arduino\hardware\arduino\avr\cores\arduino - Location of Arduino.h 2. C:\Program Files - Location of (x86)\arduino\hardware\arduino\avr\variants\standard 3. C:\Program Files (x86)\arduino\hardware\arduino\avr\libraries\softwareserial pins_arduino.h - Location of SoftwareSerial.h 14
16 You can either check the Relative Path box, or leave it unchecked. Try to get the one that works. If you choose to check, the directory will appear to be like:../../../../../../../../program Files (x86)/arduino/hardware/arduino/avr/variants/standard (5) In the Optimization, choose Optimize for size (-Os) for the Optimization Level, and insert -fdata-sections to Other optimization flags field. Check the appropriate listed boxes. (6) In Miscellaneous, insert -fno-exceptions to Other flags field. Check the appropriate listed boxes. 15
17 (7) Next, we are going to setup the linker. Select Libraries under the AVR/GNU Linker. The Libraries entry should be pre-included with libm (m refers to the AVR math library). Click the green-plus icon and add libcore, which is the Arduino core library we stored earlier. This requires us to add the directory to find libcore.a, by clicking the green-plus icon in the Library search path. Repeat the same procedure to include necessary libraries and their directories. (8) Finally in the linker Optimization, check the Garbage collect unused sections (-WI, --gc-sections). 16
18 (9) The project setup is completely done. Save the settings, and we are ready to build the project. Step 5: Building the project. (1) You can either directly click on F7 button, or select Build > Build Solution from the menu bar. Watch the results from the output window located on the bottom of the Atmel Studio window. (2) If it is successful, this will eventually appear in the output window: If not, look at the errors and solve the problems. 17
19 Step 6: Flashing.hex files to the Arduino board. (1) The final step is to flash (upload) the built program to the Arduino board. First, we need to configure the avrdude utility to enable flashing via serial cable. On the menu bar, select Tools > External Tools > Add. Insert the following details: Title: USB to Serial Programmer: COM3 Command: C:\Program Files (x86)\arduino\hardware\tools\avr\bin\avrdude.exe Arguments: -C"C:\Program Files (x86)\arduino\hardware\tools\avr\etc\avrdude.conf" -v -v -patmega328p - carduino -P\\.\COM3 -b D -Uflash:w:"$(ProjectDir)Debug\$(ItemFileName).hex":i Initial directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\arduino\hardware\tools\avr\bin Note: - The COM port is usually the same port number used in the Arduino IDE. - The baudrate can be changed depending on the device s ability (115200, 19200, 57600, etc) but usually the same as used in the Arduino IDE for serial communication. - Consider to replace -carduino with -cwiring in the arguments, which ever works depending on the Arduino software version. (2) Check the Use Output window box, so that we can see the results of the flash when it is done, in the Atmel Studio output window. Click Apply, and you should get this: 18
20 (3) Click OK and go back to the project. Make sure your projectfile.cpp is open in the studio window, and the Arduino board is connected to your computer via USB cable. On the menu bar, select Tools > USB to Serial Programmer: COM3. (4) You should see the flashing progress in the output window. The result of a successful flash will be like: You ve made it.
