3 Evolution of lens materials.. Initially lenses were made only from Glass.. Glass being brittle and dangerous when breaks - was used for vision correction and placed in front of our most precious organ The Eye! Then plastic lenses were introduced Starting from CR , to mid index (1.56) and high index plastic lenses like 1.60,1.67 etc.

4 New and improved lens materials: - Subsequently new materials with advanced technologies were introduced like Polycarbonate, Trivex, Tribrid etc that were, Tough Impact Resistant and With High Tensile Strength Basic lenses Average thickness Used world wide Standard plastic Polycarbonate Upto 20 % thinner lenses than plastic. Impact resistant Active lifestyle. 100 % UV cut. Not much suitable for rimless frames. 35 % thinner than plastic High Impact resistant. High tensile strength. Unbreakable. Easy to tint Suitable for all frames. 100 % UV cut. Trivex /Tribrid Other high index lenses Thinner and lighter lenses. 100 % UV cut.

5 A look at the lens materials in detail : - Glass Lenses Originally, all lenses were made of glass, which while it made them very resistant to scratching, also made them very heavy and prone to breakage. Advantages: Exceptional scratch resistance (don't need scratch resistant coating). Excellent optical clarity. Excellent opticanti-reflective (AR) coating adheres to glass very well.al clarity. Disadvantages About 25 to 40 percent thicker than polycarbonate and high index plastic lenses At least twice the weight of plastic or polycarbonate lenses. Can shatter or chip easier than lenses made of other materials. Require a special coating to provide 100% UV protection.

6 A look at the lens materials in detail : - Plastic CR 39 Lenses 1.50 and Mid index as 1.56 it is more lightweight and thinner than glass making it comfortable to wear Advantages: Good optical quality. Lightweight - About half the weight of glass lenses. More shatter resistant than glass lenses. Plastic lenses accept tints easily with uniform grade colours. Affordable. Disadvantages About 20 to 35 percent thicker than polycarbonate or high index plastic lenses. Require scratch-resistant coating for added durability. Require a special coating to provide 100% UV protection

7 A look at the lens materials in detail : - High Index Plastic Lenses 1.60 & 1.67 Mid and high index lenses are for people with a high prescription. They allow spectacle lenses to be made thinner, lighter and flatter than previously possible. Advantages: Lightweight - Between plastic and polycarbonate lenses in weight. Thin - About 15 to 30 percent thinner than plastic lenses. Better peripheral optics than polycarbonate lenses (for prescription sunglasses). Cosmetically more attractive. flatter shape of the lens will make things look less distorted towards the edges of your lenses. Disadvantages Requires scratch-resistant coating for durability. Regular mid high index lenses are less impact resistant than Polycarbonate More lens reflections than glass or plastic lenses (AR coating recommended). Expensive

8 A look at the lens materials in detail : - Polycarbonate Lenses Polycarbonate is one of the strongest and safest materials on the market. Advantages: Excellent impact-resistance - 10 times more impact resistant than other lenses. Thin - About 20 to 25 percent thinner than plastic or glass lenses. Lightweight - About 20 percent lighter than plastic lenses. Blocks 100 percent UV rays without needing a special coating. Disadvantages Requires scratch-resistant coating for durability. Peripheral vision may be slightly less clear in strong prescription powers. More lens reflections than glass or plastic lenses (AR coating recommended). Cracks while edging and mounting.

9 A look at the lens materials in detail : - Trivex and Tribrid lenses Trivex material provides the complete package of optical quality, lightweight comfort, strength and protection the critical performance characteristics called for in everyday living. Advantages: High impact resistance than polycarbonate High tensile strength than polycarbonate Unbreakable Easy to tint. Suitable for edging in rimless frames Disadvantage : Expensive!!!!
