1 Connector Repeatability of Type-N Coaxial Adapters Nowadays we have in Finnish Defence Forces a lot of different automatic testing systems. Many of these systems mainly use Type-N coaxial connectors Because Type-N is very old connector and we have used it for years, our central store and our local laboratories have several different qualities of these connectors During many years I have made investigations and noticed that different N connectors have different mismatch and connector repeatability. 2 Worse mismatch and repeatability problems For example if you are using adapters which have worse mismatch when you are measuring power and change adapters between different measurements, the measuring results could be quit different The other occasion at home made automatic systems is that you have specified you max /min limits using the same adapter all the time and next time (or place) you use different but maybe same type adapter with different mismatch.

3 Worse mismatch and repeatability problems cont. Finally, when we calibrate our customers Calibration Kits we want to check when their opens, shorts, loads or adapters repeatability's are no more generally acceptable. Following is the reason for my investigations and even for this presentation.

4 The older mismatch and repeatability investigation First I want to show to you my older investigation slices, which are the reason for my further measuring. These measurements are made by using VNA (C) and between test ports I have connected two adaptors ff and mm together. After that I have connected and reconnected them several times. I want to remind to you, that the results are as a result of two different adapters.

5 Single adapter measurement by using VNA Tools Second we measured using only one adapter at the time, we made all of these measurements as follows: VNA HP C and VNA TOOLS (METAS) Cal kit HP 0B Cal type S OSL (SL) Port locked cable position DUT connected to test Port Adapter Load (Rosenberger, slots f ) connected to the DUT

6 Single adapter measurement by using VNA Tools cont. Measured times ( one round ), connected and reconnected between every measure (both size) Repeatability result is the standard deviation of five different measurements Wrench Torque are used when it is possible

7 How to decide the measuring method? First I wondered, how to measure them? What component should be after the DUT, Load, Short or Mismatch. Next page shows the result of same adapter terminated with Load,. SWR mismatch or Short.

8 What is good or bad repeatability? Second, how to describe the value, db or linear mode and how big should be the limits (Pass or Fail). We decided to use as a standard HP VNA calibration guide, which define that the limits of Test Port Adapters repeatability should be better than 0dB.

19 Conclusions Totally we measured different adaptors, part of them are new and part are used (still in specification) and all of them are cleaned and gaged. There was minor difference between new and used or ff, fm and mm adaptors. All the PC (IEC - Class 0) adaptors have almost the same repeatability Normal (IEC - class or ) adaptors have average at least db worse repeatability than PC adaptors and to 0 times worse mismatch (Linear mode).
