2 Predictions from week 1 Today s smartphones are an early version of the mobile computing future. Smartphones will become an inseparable part of our lives. 2

3 Mobile trends 2013 marks the first year when the number of smartphones sold will exceed the number of ordinary (feature) phones. Eventually, ordinary phones will disappear. Essentially all mobile devices will be smart. Moore s Law and Kryder s Law are operating in the background. More future processing power Increased future storage capacities 3

4 Mobile trends Mobile usage is increasing as a percentage of overall Internet use. Increased mobile Internet access suggests an accelerating trend towards the mobile life style Instantaneous, spontaneous, continuous 4

5 From convergence to divergence Convergence Core smartphone design motivation is to converge as many sensors and processing capabilities into one device. To date, clearly successful Physical size is limiting for certain uses Competitive and profit concerns have an influence on certain capabilities 5

6 Divergence View smartphone and other general purpose mobile devices as processing platform modules. Others modules provide [advanced] capabilities. Are designed to leverage the capabilities of the processing module. Consumer decides what to add on End result is a consumer designed, hybrid product The processing module provides full access to the Internet. 6
