1 Private Mobile Office creating mobility and improving contact ability in island environments Contents Overview Business Requirements Target Customer Benefits of PMO v DECT Reseller Benefits Competitive Overview Customer Testimonials ROI / Business Case Model About PMN Contact Details Overview Private Mobile Office makes use of standard GSM mobile handsets to deliver effective mobile communication in island environments. An island can be defined as being geographically or logistically remote from any head office or corporate communication infrastructure. In recent times DECT solutions have been utilised in this type of operating scenario. Whilst this approach has its advantages, it also has some significant drawbacks, such as the cost and quality of requisite handsets and concerns over coverage and range. The PMO solution is designed to address these potential pitfalls. It is pre-configured for ease of install, clients make significant cost savings, proven GSM protocols deliver peace of mind and GPRS technology enables remote data access for a true competitive advantage. Business Requirements When it comes to communications solutions, fundamental requirements barely differ according to customer size or sector of operation and can be grouped under the broad headings of cost and control. The following independent statistics illustrate client requirements: From a control perspective, 93% of medium sized businesses state that a reliable and resilient service is their number-one priority when purchasing any communication solution (Source: Ofcom November 2006). Cost plays a significant role in any decision making process and 31% of respondents said it was a very important consideration. Also 95% of medium sized companies spend less that 50k per annum on their telecommunications. (Source: Ofcom November 2006)
2 Target Customer The PMO network has an effective range of 9000 square metres (subject to survey), and is designed for up to 250 users. It s envisaged that customers will be UK organisations with mobile workforces that need not necessarily be technologically minded. Clients with an island requirement are likely to span the private and public sectors and could for instance include: Construction companies (e.g. greenfield building sites) Remote (possibly temporary) offices buildings Defence industry (locations where no communications infrastructure exists) Leisure industry (e.g. cruise ships) Hotels/Hospitality ( underground conference facilities with limited Macro GSM coverage, solutions for gold customers) Retail (e.g. car supermarkets) Benefits of PMO v DECT in island scenarios Utilisation of existing mobile handsets longer battery life, better choice and no need to purchase additional, dedicated and specific cordless handsets. A significant advantage. Better range PMO has an effective range of up to 9000 square metres (subject to survey). DECT solutions can have as little as 300m in open space or only 50m in built-up areas. Cost savings PMO technology is more cost effective in a variety of ways: 1. Lower set up costs Because DECT requires significantly more location points, radio interference cards and numerous repeaters to provide comparable coverage. 2. Savings through superior functionality calls and texts between on island personnel are free of charge and PMO solutions are redeployable from project to project, significantly reducing subsequent communications spend. Calls to outside the island can re-routed through any corporate PBX at PSTN call charge rates. 3. Additional performance cost savings for instance through userfamiliarity with a handset resulting in improvements in employee productivity and efficiency. GSM foundation adherence to GSM standards gives PMO customers reassurance in terms of cost-effectiveness, interoperability and convergence with other wireless technologies moving forward.
3 GPRS capability PMO enables access to a company s data network via mobile handsets which can significantly improve customer service provision. Reseller Benefits (obviously can leave this out where applicable) Obviously many of the above benefits are replicated here, especially in relation to functionality. There are however, also distinct benefits from a reseller perspective, of PMO technologies: Pre-configured plug and play solution in a range of standard user packages Clear market potential (100,000 UK businesses in the employee bracket) [Source: Telecomweb research August 2006] Extremely cost effective to end users, but attractive margins are retained at reseller level Opportunity for pull-through of other services Unique offering in the marketplace - no real like-for-like competition (e.g. coverage up to twice that of DECT or WiFi system and requires 50% less access points) Utilises legacy customer PBX / handsets and so minimises objections on ROI grounds (NB I ve taken the illustration out and suggest you replace it with the construction industry graphic I mocked up, as discussed this morning) Competitive Overview Taking a wider viewpoint and looking at alternative FMI provision, Wi-Fi centric solutions require significant capital expenditure on specialised handsets and additional wireless infrastructure. As a guideline, when selling against Cisco s WiFi alternative, the PMO solution costs in some 30% cheaper. Customer Testimonials DigitalSkys DigitalSkys Limited are utilising PMN to assist in the development of their satellite GSM network services. The solutions provided will enable GSM coverage from standard mobile handsets in the local area, with backhaul connections through the DigitalSkys satellite network infrastructure, covering Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asian sub-continent. The project involves the implementation and installation of DigitalSkys core GSM hardware into their satellite hub infrastructure located at the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority Teleport, "We selected the Private Mobile Network solution because of its flexibility, adaptability and quality in developing and operating our unique GSM satellite network service, together with the close and active support provided by PMN and their business partnership approach, said Gavin Wehlburg, Director Operations of DigitalSkys. Military Solutions
4 Private GSM Mobile Network systems are under trial with undisclosed parts of both the US and UK armed forces. The system allows these organisations to control GSM traffic within localised areas such as offices or military bases as well as providing the ability to quickly create localised calling cells in remote locations, normally outside of GSM coverage. These are military organisations that understand the value of GSM technology but do not want to run mission critical and sensitive communications over a publicly accessible network, The Private Mobile exchange (PMX) enables the deployment of secure GSM networks into areas where operational requirements make call access a high priority and where macro network mobile access may not be appropriate or available; enabling a standard mobile phone to be used in environments where there is limited or no coverage would normally render it useless. ROI / Business Case Model Applying the PMO to a 50 user organisation within the construction industry: Comment [YUN1]: L - not sure whether you wanted the case study elements to stand out and therefore be in a different typeface, but I have left these in Arial The solution provides voice and messaging services whilst staff are on the move, ensuring efficient communication and immediate access to information across the building site environment. More specifically, the PMO: Supports the need to move offices or set up temporary ones Avoids significant fixed line install costs and mitigates charges for mobile phone usage Operates as an on-site extension with no charge between users Text messages are free within the site coverage area: advantageous in noisy environments The solution is fully portable and can easily be moved to the next project site Communications are up and running with on-site communications within minutes A Standard 50 user PMO package would include: Ability to support up to 50 2G mobile phones 3 X Base Transceiver Stations Private Mobile exchange software Tower server with pre-installed software 50 x GSM SIM cards for Private Mobile Office 2 x port Gateway to Analogue PBX *Options exist for ruggedised handsets, executive handsets and dual SIM capability The PMO solution outlined here would cost (retail) in the region of 22,000. With DECT telephony, an island network is considerably more expensive. Handsets alone average and the cost of a 15 base station network with 50 handsets is likely to be in excess of 30,000. About PMN
