We hope you enjoy the launch of our new series of hands-on learning experiences that were designed to teach tech-newcomers how to use the latest technology to stay connected to the people and passions in their lives. DURING TODAY'S HANDS-ON WORKSHOP, you'll learn how to use an Android smartphone as a tool for connection, education, entertainment, productivity and more. The core concepts that you learn will apply across multiple other smartphones and tablets. AARP HAS A GOAL OF HELPING PEOPLE turn their goals and dreams into Real Possibilities. With the launch of the AARP TEK program, we ve accelerated our focus on this mission by providing technology training that allows the 50+, including our members, to live life to the fullest. Tap the circle icon to show all installed apps. 11 Return, Home, and Recent Apps 4 Touchscreen Basics: Hand Gestures Tap Tapping is to a touchscreen device as clicking is to a mouse on a desktop computer. Tap the touchscreen to open apps, browse web links, select menu options and more. Swiping Swipe from side to side or up and down to navigate apps and websites. Zooming In and Out To zoom in on a website, photo, or document, place two fingers on the screen and spread them apart. To zoom out, place two fingers on the screen and bring them together. This is known as stretching and pinching. Drag Touch the screen and hold, then move your finger to drag items.

5 Phone Calls Your smartphone makes phone calls and manages your contacts. Enter a person's information once, then you will be able to reference it like a phone book whenever needed. Making Calls To place a call on an Android smartphone, tap the Phone app in the favorites tray. Tap the keypad icon > enter a phone number > then press the green circle to dial out. To end a call, tap the red circle. Create a Contact Contacts store all of a person's information, including phone numbers, addresses, home or business addresses, and more. To add a contact: Options Menu Tap on the Phone app > Open the Options Menu (by tapping on the three vertical dots) > Tap New Contact > Enter the information as prompted > Tap the Check Mark Congratulations, you just set up a new contact! If you tap the star icon at the top of the contact's name, then they will be added to your favorites. Touchscreen Basics: Viewing Your Phone A touchscreen device can be viewed in two different modes, Landscape and Portrait. The device will adjust automatically depending on how it s held. Some activities, such as watching videos, are best viewed in landscape. Other ones, like reading books, are best viewed in portrait. Landscape Portrait 5

6 Notifications & Setup Google Account Setup The first time you turn on your Android smartphone, you ll be asked if you want to sign in with your Google account or to create a new one. Though you can use your device without a Google account, setting one up allows you to back up your phone s settings, and integrate free services like Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Contacts. Notifications To quickly see your recent notifications, swipe down from the top of the screen. This will show you available updates for your apps, recent s, weather alerts, calendar events and even the scores of your favorite teams. Tap a notification to read it. There are many types of notifications, and you can choose which ones you want to receive. Connecting to the Internet Your smartphone accesses the Internet through either a Wi-Fi or a cellular connection. A cellular connection can be used almost anywhere, but in order to connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi, you need to be near a wireless access point, called a hotspot. Your smartphone needs to be connected to the Internet in order to surf the web, download apps, and much more. You'll find wireless hotspots at homes, hotels, coffee shops, libraries and many other types of businesses. For security purposes, most hotspots require a password to access the Internet. Here's how to turn it on and enter a password: From the settings app, tap the Wi-fi to the on position > Tap on an available network > Enter the password when prompted > Tap Connect. You're now connected to the Internet! For NOTIFICATIONS, Swipe DOWN from the TOP 6 Adjusting the Settings on your phone allows you to personalize your preferences and can increase security and usability. Consider customizing your font size, volume, and passcode security settings.

7 Camera Camera app Taking Pictures Your smartphone is equipped with a powerful camera. To take a picture, open the Camera app > Frame your picture in the display > Tap the button at the bottom. You just took a photo! While framing the shot, you can pinch and stretch to zoom in and out. Video Camera Recording Videos Your camera can also take high definition videos. Editing and Sharing your shots You can view, edit, delete and share your photos and videos using the Photos app. This versatile app lets you crop, rotate, make color corrections, and apply image filters to change the appearance of your shots. To edit, tap the pencil icon, to delete, tap the trash can icon, and to share your shots, tap the share icon. and Text Messaging are the two common ways to share your shots. Photos app Edit Share Delete To record a video, open your Camera app, swipe left to right, and tap the video icon. Tap the button on the right to begin recording, and the video camera icon will change to a square with a circle around it. Tap this square to stop recording when you are finished with your video. 8 Typing You can enter text by typing on the keyboard or speaking to your device. Your smartphone has a virtual keyboard that appears whenever you need to type.?123 use or Using distribution the keyboard Access Numbers and Symbols Access more Symbols from the Numbers Keyboard Tap the Up arrows for Capital Letters. Double Tap for Caps Lock. Backspace or Delete ABC Return to Letters Keyboard Tap the Microphone Key to enter text by dictation. Predictive text This feature is called Predictive Text because it tries to predict the word you are typing. Tap the suggested word to insert it into your sentence. Autocorrect If you misspell a word, a line will appear underneath it. Tap the intended word from the list of correctly spelled words. 8

9 Google Now Tap the M ICON IC and SPEA K! Google Now is a digital personal assistant that learns your behavior, then gathers information that you'll find useful. You can ask it questions using natural language. From knowing the weather before you start your day, to planning the best route to avoid traffic, or even checking your favorite team s score while they re playing, Google Now gives you the information that you request when you want it. It can add an event to your calendar, tell you movie times, or find restaurants that are nearby. Other smartphone brands have similar functionality. Texting To use Google Now swipe up from the bottom > Tap the microphone icon to ask a question. "Texts" are short, conversational messages that are sent between two or more devices. There are many situations where sending a text is the most efficient way to quickly get in touch with someone. To send a text message tap the Hangouts app > Enter a phone number or tap a contact > Enter more numbers or contacts for a group message > Type your message > Tap the airplane symbol to send the message. Emoji are small graphic pictures that you can insert into your text messages. They are accessible by tapping the smiley face above the virtual keyboard. Emoji are used as a playful way to express emotion instead of using words. 9

10 Play Store & Apps Play Store Visit the Google Play Store to browse and download new apps. All of the apps featured in the workshop and in this guidebook are available there. You can browse by top charts, free apps, or by category. By tapping the magnifying glass, you can search for apps that cater to your interests. Here's how to download an app: Tap the Play Store app > Tap a header to browse or tap the magnifying glass to search > Choose an app > Tap Install. Great job! You just downloaded an app to your device! Chrome Chrome is a web browser app that allows you to search the Internet and visit websites. Firefox is another web browser to consider. Hangouts The Google Hangouts app allows you to make video calls, send messages and share photos and videos. Skype and Tango have similar functionality. 10

11 PERSONALIZE your device with APPS that interest you! Clock The Clock app does more than just tell local and international time. It is also a timer, a stopwatch, and an alarm. Open Table You can make dinner reservations, read reviews, and get directions to many top restaurants in the city using the Open Table app. Also consider Urbanspoon, Groupon and Yelp. Google Maps You can get turn by turn directions from wherever you are to wherever you need to go. Whether you re walking, driving, or taking public transportation, Google Maps can help to get you there. Also consider MapQuest and Waze. 3 Google Calendar Google Calendar can help you to never miss an event or meeting. You can invite others to join you, and even share your schedule. It syncs across all of your computers and devices. 11

12 Apps USA Today The USA Today app lets you read news stories for free on your smartphone. The articles are accompanied with additional photos and videos. There are other daily news apps such as CNN, FOX News, and NPR. ScoreCenter You can track your favorite teams, get the latest stories, and view all the scores you want with sports apps such as ESPN ScoreCenter, CBS Sports, FOX Sports Mobile, and Yahoo Sports. Google use Play Newsstand or distribution AARP The Google Play Newsstand app allows you to customize YOUR news by pulling articles from top news sources of your choice. Flipboard and LinkedIn Pulse are similar apps. The AARP app is a great way to browse Member benefits and read AARP news on your smartphone. Also be sure to check out the AARP Publications app to read your favorite AARP Magazines, Bulletins and Books. 12 Pandora Pandora allows you to create personalized music channels based on your favorite bands. You can choose an artist you like and Pandora will create a channel that plays music in the same genre. Some other music apps are TuneIn, Spotify, and Shazam. Weather Channel With the Weather Channel app you can check the weather forecast of almost any city in the world. Other apps are Yahoo Weather, and Weather.

13 Google Play Books Google Play Books puts one of the world s largest bookstores right on your smartphone. And don t worry about downloading too many books your device has room for thousands. Other book apps to consider are Kindle, Audible, and Kobo. Words With Friends Two players compete to form words on a board in this popular game. The chat feature allows players to send messages while playing. There are tens of thousands of free games. Other game apps include Scrabble, NY Times Crosswords, and Angry Birds. use YouTube or distribution Google Earth YouTube has the largest collection of videos anywhere. This app is a resource for educational and entertainment based videos. Other video apps are Netflix and Google Play Movies. Google Earth is a digital globe made from satellite imagery. Look at the house you grew up in, the great pyramids, and everything in between. Some other apps include Sky Map and NASA. Many apps are FREE! AllRecipes You can discover thousands of recipes, create shopping lists, and get suggested meals from ingredients you already have on hand. There are many cooking apps including Epicurious and Big Oven. 13

14 TEK Terms APPS Apps, short for applications, are programs that perform specific functions on your device. Each icon on the home screen is an app. There are over 1,000,000 apps available. BROWSER A browser, or web browser, is an app that is used to access websites on the Internet. CELLULAR CONNECTION A Cellular connection is a paid phone and Internet service that a carrier company provides for you to make calls and browse the Internet while on the go. DOWNLOAD Downloading is the process of transferring information from the Internet to your device. GOOGLE Not PLAY STORE for commercial The Google Play Store is where you go to browse and download new apps to your device. NOTIFICATIONS Notifications are alerts you receive when there new activity within an app, such as unread messages, sports scores, or new comments in a social media app. OPERATING SYSTEM The operating system, or "OS", of a device is the software that runs the applications. Android is the operating system on the smartphone used in this guidebook, but other devices run comparable operating systems. SMARTPHONE A smartphone is a mobile computer with an intuitive touchscreen that can do much more than just make phone calls. TEXT MESSAGING Commonly referred to as 'texting', is the exchange of brief electronic messages sent between two or more mobile devices. VIDEO CALLING Conversations that take place over the Internet using the camera on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Video Calling allows you to see each other while talking. Wi-Fi Wi-Fi is a type of wireless Internet connection that works within limited range of a wireless access point. 14
