1 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy To allow students to engage with digital learning Newcastle High School has 13 computer rooms, a wireless network with access across the whole school, a large number of laptops and a smaller pool of tablets available for period loan. From 2015 students may choose to bring their own devices (BYOD) to school. If students select BYOD they are required to agree to the conditions outlined in the attached BYOD Student Agreement. School will provide the following: The school will provide access to a filtered internet service. School WILL NOT provide: Technical support for your device. A charging facility for your device. Printing from your device. Permitted devices: Any piece of technology which can access the internet through the school s wi-fi network Examples Laptop, Ultrabook, ipad, Android Tablet, ipad Mini, Smartphones. Process: A BYOD License will be issued to applicants that complete the BYOD Student Agreement and will be revoked if the device is used contrary to the agreement. Students will be requested to keep this license on them at all times as proof of their right to bring their own device to school. No License = No Device DER devices will be treated as a BYOD and all students will be expected to carry a BYOD Licence. (After 2014 all devices will be recognised as BYOD for a simpler system) Classroom Policy: The teacher has the final say on what can and can t be used in their classroom. TECH ON TECH OFF NB: Please note that DER Pool devices will remain available until further notice to cater for students without a device. As Part of the BYOD project, students are now able to download and install a copy of Microsoft Office, Windows and Adobe software on your home computer or device that you bring to school. A YouTube video has been put together showing the process for this. It can be viewed at

2 NHS Bring Your Own Device Student Agreement 2014 Agreement - Students who wish to take advantage of the BYOD policy must read this agreement in the company of a parent/carer. This page is to be signed and returned to the library. By signing at the bottom of this page students agree to the following behaviours in exchange for a BYOD Licence: PLEASE TICK ALL BOXES TO DEMONSTRATE YOU HAVE READ THEM I agree that my use of the Department s internet will be primarily for learning. I agree to only ever use my own portal/internet log-in details and never share those with others. I agree to not hack or bypass any hardware and software security implemented by the Department or my school. I agree not to take photographs or record staff and students unless given permission. I agree to not use BYOD to knowingly search for, link to, access or send anything that is; Offensive/Inappropriate Threatening, abusive or defamatory Considered bullying behaviour Access to social media in class I agree to report inappropriate behaviour and material to my teacher. I agree to stay safe by not giving out my personal information to strangers. I understand that my activity on the internet is recorded and these records may be used in investigations, court proceedings or for other legal reasons. I understand that I am responsible for the safe keeping of my device and any damage to or theft of my device is not the responsibility of the school. I agree that use of my device during school activities is at the direction of the teacher. I understand that not abiding by the school BYOD rules will result in the loss of my BYOD Licence and a suspension of internet access. 3 BYOD Choosing a device Many devices can be used within the BYOD policy at Newcastle High School. It is up to the students and parents to research and select the device that will be most suited to them. Although many devices are 4G and Wi-Fi capable, students will only require a device that has 5GHz Wi- Fi capabilities. Questions to ask your Computer Seller if you are going to purchase a new device: Does it have 5GHz wireless? Will the battery last for a whole school day (No charging facilities at school)? What physical protection is available for transportation in a school bag? Does warranty cover accidental damage or damage caused through negligence? Listed below are some basic Pros and Cons for the three major devices, ipad, Android and Windows tablets. ipads Excellent battery life Widely used Large variety of apps No USB port Will not run Flash content Will need to be synced to a desktop computer with itunes to back up and transfer data from your computer Android Tablets Large variety of apps Will run Flash content Many companies produce Android tablets, this makes them more affordable Potential incompatibilities between apps on different models Windows tablets Can get Microsoft Office Has a detachable keyboard Will rush Flash content Many models contain a USB or Micro USB port Will run like a desktop PC. This can be good and bad. Because it runs like a PC, it draws much more power and drains battery life much faster than other tablets.
