1 BYOD Bring Your Own Device Program Frequently asked questions A range of question parents, students and teachers might ask about the Pine Rivers State High School BYOD program What kind of device What kind of device should I select for the BYOD program at Pine Rivers? The most suitable specifications for a device suitable for the BYOD program are: o Minimum screen size of 10 inches o Processor: Intel Pentium, Intel i3, AMD A4 or better o 4Gb of RAM/Memory or more o 128Gb HDD (Hard Disk Drive) or bigger o WIFI connection (Dual Band Recommended) o USB port o Keyboard o Windows 8.1 operating system or above o Mac OSX operating system o Protective pouch or bag The BYOD brochure and school website describes a number of devices that fulfill the specifications and are known to function effectively on our school network. What things should I consider when getting a device for my student? Will this device meet my student s needs for the remainder of their schooling or will I be purchasing another device?
2 Warranty: o How long is the warranty? o Is accidental damage insurance available or needed? Place of purchase: o Directly from a vendor/manufacturer o Retail outlet Battery: o Longer life battery o Spare battery Robust construction Size and weight Versatile Backing up data: o USB o Portable HDD o The cloud Can the Resource Hire Scheme fees I pay to the school cover the cost of my device? No. Resource Hire Scheme fees are allocated to textbooks, resources and consumables including digital resources. Under the BYOD scheme you assume the cost and supply of a suitable device for your student What can my student do if I can t afford a device? There is a limited number of devices which can be borrowed from the school in exceptional circumstances. Please contact the Head of Department - Learning Technology to discuss arrangements to support your student. Can I buy a device from the school? No. We are not a supplier or retailer of devices to students We can suggest makes and models of devices which meet our specifications and are known to operate on our network Can I use a tablet? Yes, if it meets BYOD device specifications. For example, it has a keyboard Can I use a tablet with a touch screen keyboard? Yes. If it meets the device specifications for the BYOD program and has a physical keyboard A touch screen keyboard reduces screen display area for productivity applications like word processors and spreadsheets Can I use an ipad?
3 No. It does not meet the device specifications for the BYOD program Why can t I use an ipad? An ipad does not meet the specifications for our BYOD program An ipad uses the Apple ios operating system which has limited or no compatibility with teacher's C4Ts (laptops) and all other devices connected to the PRSHS network An ipad is a personal device and does not perform well on our network While it can be connected, the connection compatibility is prone to problems and requires high levels of maintenance by technicians, this level of support is not available at present. Can I use a Chromebook? No. It relies on the Google environment which DET does not support It would not operate effectively if at all on our school network No. It does not meet the device specifications for the BYOD program In the classroom! Is the device going to be used all the time? Often. Classroom learning environments integrate ICTs as a strategy to enable, enhance and facilitate learning however it is not best to be on the computer all of the time. In every subject. Your device is a tool for communicating individually or collaboratively, inquiring to discover, collect and organise information and as a device to create and develop evidence of learning. What is the device going to be used for? A student s device is intended to engage the student with ICTs A student s device and software is a tool to enable learning A student s device can connect to online tools and spaces for learning, managing digital content and developing digital citizenship A student s device is part of a digitally rich environment for creating, communicating and inquiring Software and applications! What software or applications do I need? Microsoft Office 365 is available to students provided by DET for use at home and at school on their mobile device. The Learning Place provides guide on how to download and install. Microsoft Office 2016 is also available to students from office.com logging in with your school id (e.g. jsmit9999) Autodesk applications are also available for students from autodesk.com Adobe applications can be downloaded as a trial and then activated at school. Alternately installed and activated at school in the school library or media classes.
4 Security! What s the best way to protect my device travelling to and from school and from class to class? Carry your device inside a pouch or bag designed for that purpose. Heavily padded or semi rigid pouches and bags capable of withstanding impact are more effective Keep you device with you. Do not leave your school bag and device unattended at breaks, before or after school We recommend you carry your device in a bag with a shoulder strap or straps to secure it while you travel or move from class to class. Don t drop it Can I store my device at school? No. A device should travel to and from school each day with the student. There is no facility to store a device at school overnight or during the day. The device is the responsibility of the student What if I have swimming and have to leave my device in my bag? Security procedures are in place to protect student s bags and valuables at swimming. Bags are kept in the stands away from students in line of sight of teachers and students. Your device will remain in your bag What if I go to the Library and have to leave my bag outside? While visiting the Library students should not leave valuables in their bags. Students will be expected to take their device with them into the Library What if I have sport or Phys. Ed in the Sports Hall? Security procedures are in place. Bags are stored in the Sports Hall away from students in line of sight of teachers and students. Your device will remain in your bag Should I get anti-virus protection for my device? Anti Virus software should be used to help protect your device and run routine checks for malware on your device. The recommended anti virus software is Windows Defender which is built in to Windows for free. It works well on our network and does not impede school related functionality. Norton Anti Virus is available at a highly discounted rate ($10) through The Learning Place which all students can access. The school network has virus protection
