10 The Cons The Pitfalls, Perils, and Problems Lots of pre-thought needs to be given to guidelines Must consider equity (haves and have nots) Must deal with issues of security Determine who s responsible for safety, damage, loss, etc. Need to prepare and educate staff, students, parents Advance plan for the how, who, when of rollout Answer the question: Is this a must do? What about parents data plans? What will this do to the rest of our network? Can it withstand the traffic? What about charging?

12 But, before we opened the doors wide to personal devices in school, we followed a getting ready checklist of questions.

13 Did you decide who this is for? Yes. It s not for elementary.

14 Is your Network ready? Yes. Do we have the Network Capacity? Is there Secure Network Access? Is the Network protected? Will business as usual still be able to go on within the school?

15 Is there a policy for this? Not at first. Now- yes. Elec. Communications between Staff/Students #3283/4283 (2014) Use of Electronic Communication & Recording Devices #5516 (2014) Student Use of Privately Owned Technology #2363 (2015) Bring Your Own Device # (2015) All housed within the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) Agreements (acknowledged by parents and students) that address: Safe Use Secure use Careful use Equitable use Responsible use Restricted use (6-12) Discretionary use- teacher decision Agreed-upon use- parent & child

18 Are there key considerations? Yes. How do you define instructional environment? Schools, grounds and buses What about cheating? Integrity policy for school devices applies to BYOD. Mode for students? Silent & in non-vibrating mode Image protection? No taking/sharing of pictures/audio/video unless directed by staff (projects) or permitted by principal (e.g. Senior Breakfast)-- with specific conditions. This is the law. Games and restrictions? Instructional games; games within ESRB regulations. Problems w/operation (as in, it s not working)? Not repaired in school.

19 Other key considerations? Yes. What is a Splash Screen? An electronic signature each time student enters secure BYOD network Any prohibited areas? Gym and locker room for sure. May be others. Violation? Authorization to collect/examine with reason is clear Printing? No printing from personal devices Charging? Doing this at home is an expectation Sharing? Always a student s choice Used for PARCC? No

20 Beyond the Checklist Our administrators asked us some questions. Our teachers asked us some questions. Our students asked us some questions. Our parents asked us some questions. Our Board asked us some questions. And, we asked ourselves some questions.

21 & ARE OUR KIDS READY FOR THIS? Carrying a mobile device for communication is second nature to our students. As digital natives, the BYOD initiative taps into students natural way of doing things. WHAT IF A KID DOESN T HAVE A DEVICE? No worries! That is a family decision, and students will be given a device if they do not have one.

& WILL THE KIDS BYOD IN EVERY CLASS? Each staff member will choose to let students use or not use privately owned technology for a staff directed initiative within the instructional environment.

22 & WILL THE KIDS BYOD IN EVERY CLASS? Each staff member will choose to let students use or not use privately owned technology for a staff directed initiative within the instructional environment. CAN a KID TAKE SELFIES? The rule regarding no picture taking or sharing or recording or sharing of audio video on school grounds or bus applies to selfies as well. So, a kid can bring a phone to school, now what? Students will keep their BYOD device in silent mode while on school grounds, and comply with each staff member s rules regarding BYOD. Headphones may be worn only were permitted to do so. Student use in the cafeteria, bus, hallway (more unstructured times) is permissible within the AUP.

23 & What if a kid s device breaks or is stolen? the upkeep, care and safety of privately -owned technology is the responsibility of the student-at no expense to the school or school district. If the device is lost or stolen, report to appropriate office and follow established lost/stolen policy within the school.
