1 NB-IoT and LTE-M: Global Market Status Report based on intelligence gathered as part of GSA s ongoing industry research programme March

2 About this report Since the August 2017 report Evolution to Narrow Band Internet of Things (IoT), the mobile industry commitment to the range of 3GPP-standards-based Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) technologies has been solidified with the commercial launch of NB-IoT and LTE-M networks. In addition, the number of IoT chipset, module and device manufacturers entering the market with Cat-NB1 and Cat-M1 products has increased substantially, and includes established players and new entrants who see a long-term opportunity in this developing market sector. More recently, the 3GPP Release 14 standards have been finalised, paving the way for new Cat-NB2 and Cat-M2 chipsets, modules and devices that have more advanced technical specifications than their Release 13 forebears. 44 operators have deployed or commercially launched NB-IoT networks 13 operators have deployed or commercially launched Cat-M1 networks 34 new networks are planned or being deployed using Cat-M1 or NB-IoT GSA will continue to follow the progress of the deployments of NB-IoT and LTE-M networks and evolution of the network and device ecosystem from Cat-NB1 and Cat-M1 to Cat-NB2 and Cat-M2, as well as other 3GPP IoT technologies. Overview 3GPP IoT technologies NB-IoT/Cat-NB1 and LTE-M/Cat-M1 are set to become the global dominant LPWA technologies that are set to enable the huge market growth discussed over the past few years. The early interest in IoT in has developed into industry initiatives in areas like connected and autonomous vehicles, connected or smart homes, smart cities and smart energy. As GSA consistently reports, it is the acceleration of the 3GPP technology ecosystem that determines the speed of adoption of mobile technologies. We experienced this in LTE, the fastest-growing mobile technology of all time, and we see the same happening in IoT. 3GPP Release 13, which was finalised in June 2016, has resulted in significant numbers of commercial service launches and trials, increasing device activity, and during 2017, 3GPP-based IoT started to be deployed at scale around the world. A large number of operators have launched IoT networks using either LTE-M or NB-IoT and other operators have plans to launch in In total 44 operators have deployed or launched NB-IoT networks and 13 operators have deployed 2

3 or launched LTE-M networks. A technology is regarded as deployed when it has been installed in the operator s commercial network, and it is intended to remain in use, as compared with a trial or pilot installation that might be discontinued. A network is considered to be launched once it is available at least on a limited basis for the use of commercial customers. IoT infrastructure, chipsets, modules and devices are now available from a range of companies, large and small, well-established and start-ups. Companies are actively working on IoT use cases and opportunities in various vertical markets ranging from agriculture to energy utilities and from automotive to robotics. We expect the market to grow rapidly over the next five years and for 3GPP technologies to account for much of that growth as they continue to develop. The size of the 3GPP ecosystem will further drive commercialisation of IoT, with mobile operators, infrastructure suppliers, chipset and module manufacturers, device companies as well as development and testing houses supporting new services. In terms of IoT equipment, GSA has identified: 50 modules released supporting Cat-NB1 but not Cat-M1 (including known variants) 39 modules released supporting Cat-M1 but not Cat-NB1 (including known variants) 26 modules released supporting both Cat-NB1 and Cat-M1 (including known variants). 3

4 Figure 1: Map of countries with deployed / launched NB-IoT and LTE-M networks Technology status NB-IoT and LTE-M are defined in 3GPP Release-13, completed in June NB-IoT can be deployed within an LTE carrier, in the guard band, or in a standalone carrier in other (non-lte) spectrum. LTE-M is deployed within an LTE carrier. Two new User Equipment (UE) categories were defined: Cat-NB1 (for NB-IoT networks), and Cat-M1 (for LTE-M networks). 3GPP Release 14 was frozen in June This included a variety of enhancements to the IoT specifications. These included enhancements related to positioning and location accuracy (based on UTDOA/OTDOA Uplink/Observed Time Difference of Arrival), push-to-talk voice messaging, lower power consumption, multicast (enabling over-the-air firmware updates for large numbers of devices), and seamless cell selection/reselection (for improved mobility). These improvements will appear in new categories of devices that were also set out in the specification: Cat-NB2 and Cat-M2 devices supporting greater bandwidth and higher peak rate upstream and downstream speeds than their Cat-NB1 and Cat-M1 counterparts, as well as support for positioning and single cell multicast. Cat-M2 additionally supports enhanced mobility and single cell multicast. Cat- NB2 provides improved energy consumption. 4

5 The first chipsets supporting the next generation of IoT specifications are just being announced, although these are still in the pre-commercial phase. Examples include Sequans s Monarch N single chip Cat-NB1/NB2 platform and MediaTek s single-mode MT2625 (supporting Cat-NB1/NB2) and dual-mode MT2621 (supporting GSM and Cat-NB1/NB2). Release 15 will add TDD support for NB-IoT/Cat-NB1/NB-2 and further power enhancements. The ultimate objective of the IoT work is to deliver specifications that enable less complex UE with minimised transmit power, simpler downlink transmission modes, ultra-long battery life via power consumption reduction techniques, and better support for low coverage use cases such as meters and sensors in buildings, basements or in remote locations. Live and planned IoT networks Fifty operators have deployed or launched 3GPP-standards-based LPWA IoT services (some operators Dialog Axiata in Sri Lanka, Etisalat in UAE, Orange Belgium, HKT (CSL) Hong Kong, Singtel in Singapore, Telstra in Australia, and Turkcell in Turkey have deployed/ launched both NB-IoT and LTE-M networks). There is wide variation in terms of the scale of deployments. Some operators claim nationwide coverage and others cover a select area. For instance, Verizon in the USA covers 2.4 million square miles with its LTE-M network. Smaller launches include T-Mobile Austria s NB-IoT network in the city of St. Polten only with plans to later launch nationwide and China Mobile s launch in select locations but with plans to expand to 346 cities through 2018 to become what it claims would be the largest NB-IoT network in the world. 7 In South Korea operators KT and LG Uplus describe their network as a joint network. There have been several large-scale launches since the August 2017 report. These include those by China Mobile, and China Telecom; Telus in Canada; Vodafone and Telstra in Australia and T-Mobile in the USA. Many launches have been in single or multiple large cities initially with plans to roll out nationally over 2018; for example Deutsche Telekom in Germany launched its NB-IoT network in Hamburg, with plans to roll out to 300 locations nationally by the end of There are 29 operators planning or deploying NB-IoT networks for 2018/19, with American operator Dish planning a network for American operators Sprint and Verizon (which has also launched a Cat M1 network) plan to launch NB-IoT in Table 2. Tables 7-9 provide more information about the modules we have identified. Note that there is some uncertainty about the branding of products from ZTEWelink, which is majority owned by Gosuncn. All are listed in our tables as ZTEWelink (Gosuncn) to avoid double-counting identical modules. 11

19 Evolving use cases IoT and NB-IoT/LTE-M use cases are gaining momentum. The examples in Table 11 are a selection of use cases recently tested, trialled or commercialised. Since the August 2017 report there has been a trend towards integration of sensors into larger, more complex systems such as smart city networks and infrastructure monitoring, the data from which is then processed using machine learning or similar techniques to provide actionable outcomes.
