2 POST RESULTS SERVICES FOLLOWING PUBLIC EXAMINATIONS SUMMER SERIES: MAY/JUNE 2015 The Examination Boards offer a Post Results Service which allows candidates access to photocopies of their exam scripts, the return of original scripts, clerical checks and review of marking. All services must be administered through the Examinations Office at Bradfield College and are only applicable to the May/June exam series. If, on receiving your examination results (13 August - AS/A2 or 20 August - GCSE), you are particularly unhappy with the grade/mark it may be worth pursuing a result enquiry. Please remember that an enquiry may result in subject grades being confirmed, raised or lowered. It is important to remember that unless the total marks indicate that the next grade up was only narrowly missed (i.e. within 1% of the next grade) it may not be advisable to proceed with an enquiry. The decision as to whether to pursue a review of marking MUST be discussed with the relevant Head of Department or Housemaster/ Housemistress before proceeding. In order to decide which Post Results service you wish to pursue please refer to the guide on page 3 - Which Post Results Service Do I Want? Please note: Requests made after the deadlines WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED OR PROCESSED by the awarding bodies please check the deadline dates and times carefully and ensure all requests are received by the Exam Office in good time. Service 2 or 3: Deadline for completion is within 30 calendar days of the awarding body receiving the request. 4 REVIEW OF MARKING ( re-mark ) explained Candidates should be aware of the following points with regards to their results: Firstly, a review of marking is not, in fact, a re-mark although that is what it is commonly called; the process is that a senior examiner looks at the original marking and only if the marks originally awarded are deemed either to be too generous or too harsh, in relation to the mark scheme, will he/she adjust the marks. Grade Boundary Information Please look very closely at both the grade and unit boundaries prior to requesting a review of marking, remembering marks/grades can and DO go down every exam season. If your mark is close to the lower part of the boundary, either the subject grade or on an individual unit grade, it may not be in your best interests to request a review of marking. Once a grade has been aggregated or cashed in, marks of individual units count towards the final grade awarded. The decision to request a remark on any unit should be an informed decision, factoring the risk to both the individual unit mark and the potential effect on the overall final grade if the mark decreases. Following the receipt of your results: o Assess where your grade/unit mark falls within the unit and overall qualification boundary o If you are considering requesting an EAR (Enquiry about a Result) take time to check with the appropriate Head of Department that a review of marking is both warranted and would be beneficial to you. All heads of department are available by from the date results are released. o If you decide, in consultation with the Head of Department, to request an EAR complete and submit an EAR Form 1 by the deadline o For Upper Sixth and Leavers, payment MUST accompany every EAR or ATS request. Raw marks to UMS Marks from papers are converted to UMS (Uniform Mark Scale) and it is the UMS mark that is shown on your results sheet. There is no straightforward conversion of raw marks to UMS, the conversion varies each year. Further information on UMS and grade boundaries can be sought from both the individual awarding bodies and Head of Department. Please bear in mind, to gain one UMS, you are likely to require more than one raw mark. There are rumours every year about re-marks and stories circulate about huge changes to marks/grade etc. In order to put things into perspective a little the following table is a breakdown of EAR outcomes submitted by Bradfield following the release of results in August 2014: 4 of 16

It is not possible to appeal against the marks awarded by a board. All appeals must be made through the school and should be discussed with the Deputy Head or the Examinations Officer. Appeals must be made within 14 calendar days of receiving an EAR outcome requests submitted after the deadline will be automatically rejected by the exam board. Re-sitting Examination Modules for pupils who have left the College Pupils who have left the College may be permitted to return to re-sit one or more modules at a subsequent examination session. In almost all subjects only written papers are available to re-sit coursework/practical units are excluded - candidates should check this carefully with the Exam Officer at the earliest opportunity. A fee will be charged for the provision of this service that will cover the entry fee, invigilation and administration costs. The College will not be responsible for providing transport, accommodation or victuals for these candidates. Candidates choosing to re-sit an examination should seek permission from the Deputy Head (Academic) in writing, before making the application to the Examinations Officer. The application should contain the details of the module(s) to be sat including, the subject, the paper title, the examination code and examination board. Candidates will be required to pay all entry fees in full before the entry is made. When considering whether or not to attempt to improve a grade by re-sitting the following points should be borne in mind: No tuition or support is provided to candidates re-sitting examinations: they may negotiate separately with teachers but this will be a private arrangement. No GCSE, AS or A2 re-sits are available in January. Only Maths igcse and English Language Certificates (GCSE) are available for re-sits in January The Exam Officer MUST be informed by 30 September 2015 of any intended entries for January 2016 and by 7 December 2015 of any intended entries for the June 2016 series. 5 of 16

We will reimburse fees on the next fee account as appropriate. What each service provides EAR Option 1: Clerical check This services constitutes a check of all clerical procedures which lead to the issue of a result. The following checks are made: All parts of the script have been marked The recording of marks The totalling of marks The application of grade thresholds The application of any adjustments EAR Option 2: Review of marking of externally assessed components The clerical checks above A review of marking of units/components by a senior examiner EAR Option 3: Review of marking + Clerical check as EAR2 with copy script EAR Option 4: GCE PRIORITY REVIEW OF MARKING All services as for an EAR Option 2 This service is for A Level students ONLY whose place at University for Autumn 2015 (or deferred 2016) is dependent on a change of result and must be requested within a week of the publication of results; no later than Friday 21 August and requests must be accompanied by a cheque or BACS payment. ** The Awarding Bodies recommend requests are made by Friday 14 August to be sure the outcome is received within the UCAS decision deadline. [The review will be completed within 18 days from the submission of the request to the awarding body. Photocopies of reviewed scripts may be requested in conjunction with this service (4S).] 6 of 16

An ATS request will only be processed once payment has been received. ATS fees for students continuing their studies at Bradfield in Autumn 2015 will be collected via the next school fee account unless indicated otherwise on the form. IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE REGARDING ORIGINAL SCRIPT REQUESTS Once you have requested the return of an original script, this will immediately end your right to request an Enquiry about a Result (EAR). If you require a copy of a reviewed script, the request must be made with the EAR enquiry on EAR Form 1 using Option 3. It is essential that you do not request a script separately from the EAR. Please be clear Awarding bodies will not accept a re-marked script request after an EAR request has been made. Bradfield College will not start to process Original Script requests until Thursday 10 September. We are advised that the earliest likely return of a non-priority original script is early October and the majority arrive in mid-october. Awarding bodies aim to fulfil all original script requests by the end of October. Scripts are generally sent as a pdf file which will be ed to the candidate s Bradfield College account which will remain active until November of 16
