3 This book was written as a study guide to prepare for a Journeyman Electrical Examination. Different states, cities and counties have different exam formats and qualifying rules and requirements. Inquire with your local building department with questions pertaining to an electrical license examination. Ask for a registration and scheduling instructions. As you need to know the examination outline. Example: What date is the exam given, how many questions, multiple choice, subject area, time of the exam, what reference books are allowed in the testing area, etc. Most electrical exams are multiple choice and the subject areas of testing is basically the same. The applicant is expected to be able to answer general knowledge questions without a reference book. These type of questions are referred to as "closed book questions" or "no book questions" regardless of how they are titled the applicant is required to know the answer without a book. A new type of electrical exam has surfaced in which the Journeyman is asked 80 questions with a three-hour time limit. The heading of the Examination Outline is OPEN BOOK. The only reference permitted in the testing area in the National Electrical Code of which approximately 74% of the open book questions are asked. Where I get confused is on an OPEN BOOK exam approximately 26% of the questions are asked w ith ou t the use of a reference book. General knowledge questions from the American Electrician's Handbook and Alternating Current Fundamentals books which are NOT allowed in the testing area. Questions from theory, safety, transformers, etc. These "no book" questions formerly were titled "closed book" questions, either way, you are required to know the answer without the use of a book. Make sure you know what subjects are covered on the exam. Find out all you can, how many questions will be asked? What type of questions, multiple-choice, true-false, fill in the blank? Show your work or computer graded? What is the time allowed for the exam? What score is required to pass? These are some of the questions that will help you in your preparation. Get a blueprint of the exam you are to take. This book "Journeyman Electrician" with exam questions and answers will prepare you for both, the code book related questions and the new "no book" (formerly titled closed book) questions. You will also need to study others books on calculations, Ohms Law, theory, transformers, etc. in your proper preparation for the electrical examination.

License Information Scope - Tests a candidate's knowledge of the design, plan, layout, installation, repair and alteration of electrical conductors, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduit and related equipment and fixtures that use electrical energy for light, heat, power, data and communications in a supervised environment. The following reference IS allowed in the testing center: NFPA 70-National Electrical Code. The following references have been used to create exam questions but are NOT allowed in the testing center: American Electricians' Handbook, and Alternating Current Fundamentals.

6 JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICAL EXAMINATIONS GENERAL INFORMATION This format is very popular. It has been used for over 40 years. It's best to prepare for this format as it covers all areas of an electrical examination. Each examination consists of three parts. Parts I and II are made up of multiple-choice questions. These two parts count fifty percent of the total examination grade. PART I (Closed Book - One Hour) includes definitions, general knowledge, code questions of the type the electricians would use in their daily work and basic theory. This part contains 50 questions. PART II (Open Book - Two Hours) includes specific code questions taken from the National Electrical Code and additional theory questions. This part of the Journeyman Electrician examination contains 50 questions. PART III (Open Book - Three Hours) consists of 30 multiple-choice problems. This counts 50 percent of the final grade. Applicants will be required to solve problems from the following categories, using the data provided in the questions. 1. Residential load 2. Conduit fill 3. Demand load 4. Voltage drop single phase 5. Motor, branch circuit, feeder sizes and protection single phase 6. Ampacity and load current 7. Transformers 8. Appliance loads If there is a difference between the National Electrical Code and a local code, the applicant is expected to use the National Electrical Code on Parts I, II and III. The Journeyman Examination excludes more than a basic understanding of three-phase systems. Problems in Part III are restricted to residential and small commercial work.
