1 Journeyman Class Schedule San Diego Electrical Training Center Fall 2016 semester 4675 Viewridge Avenue Vol tri-annual San Diego, CA The classes listed in this schedule are designed for I.B.E.W. Local 569 members who wish to further their education. If you are interested in attending Journeyman classes at the Training Center, please read through this schedule and follow the simple registration instructions. Imperial County classes: (760) AC THEORY This 15-week, introductory course focusing on AC & Electronic Theory and its practical applications for the communications industry. It is presented in (30) three hour and thirty minute sessions. This course combines classroom presentations with practical hands-on lab exercises to provide entry-level Sound Technicians with a requisite understanding of electricity and electronic theory. MW 9/7-12/ :30pm 204/205 San Diego Wittmann ADVANCED COPPER / FIBER Upon completion of this course the studentwill have mastered copper and fiber optic installations. Hands on training is an integral part of the course. The following areas are covered: ANSI/TIA/EIA Wiring Standards and Communications sections of the National Electric Code, local area network and telecommunications cabling characteristics, topologies, media, connectorization, splicing and termination, grounding and bonding, pulling and testing of copper cable and optical fiber, firestopping, site surveys and safety practices. Basic networks and IP addressing will also be covered. T 9/13-12/ :30pm 112 San Diego Bevers AUDIO/VIDEO, CATV & CONTROLS Students will learn the basics of low voltage systems, associated devices, and the methods of the industry, CCTV, CATV, Audio, Intrusion Detection, Nurse Call, Access Control Systems. All the basic elements of low voltage systems are combined into a single source to give a concrete understanding of the operation and integration of individual systems. The National Electrical Code is discussed in addition to the language and terminology of the industry. TTH 9/7-12/ :30pm 110/111 San Diego Cole/Hemingway BASIC CPR, AED AND FIRST AID FOR ADULTS Certification in CPR, AED and First Aid card is good for two years. Participants learn to recognize several lifethreatening emergencies, provide CPR, use of AED, and relieve choking. 2 BASIC CPR, AED AND FIRST AID FOR ADULTS - RENEWAL This course is a RENEWAL course for those who need to refresh their CPR, AED and First Aid skills and renew their CPR, AED and First Aid certification card. Current certification is required. Card is good for two years. W 10/ :30pm 206 San Diego Van Noordt W 10/ :30pm 206 San Diego Van Noordt TH 12/ :30pm 205 San Diego Cole TH 12/ :30pm 205 San Diego Cole CODE CALCULATIONS: BOX FILL This course covers Article 314 of the NEC (National Electric Code) which covers the installation and use of all boxes and conduit bodies, used as outlet, device, junction, or pull boxes. Special emphasis will be put on box fill and box volume calculations. All participants will become familiar with Table (A) for metal boxes and Table (B) Volume Allowance Required per Conductor. Students will be taught how to calculate the available space or volume for a given box when there are devices and/or equipment installed or planned to be installed in that box. NOTE: Please bring a code book and calculator to class. F 11/4 1 4:30-8pm 101 San Diego Collier CODE CALCULATIONS: CONDUCTOR AMPACITY This course covers Section of the NEC (National Electric Code) which covers Ampacities for Conductors Rated volts. All participants will become familiar with Table for Conductor Application and Insulation, (B)(2)(a) Adjustment Factors for More Than 3 Current Carrying Conductors in a Raceway, Table (B)(6) Conductor Types and Sizes for 120/240, 3-wire, Single Phase Dwelling Services and Feeders. NOTE: Please bring a code book and calculator to class. F 11/18 1 4:30-8pm 101 San Diego Collier CODE CALCULATIONS: RACEWAY FILL The NEC Code Calculations: Raceway Fill course covers basic procedures on how to select the proper size raceway based on insulation type, size and number of conductors installed in a raceway. F 12/9 1 4:30-8pm 101 San Diego Collier CODE CALCULATIONS: VOLTAGE DROP This course introduces the student to equations used to calculate resistance and voltage drop based on Table 8, Chapter 9 of the NEC (National Electrical Code). All participants will become familiar with Table 8 of Chapter 9, Conductor Properties and Table Allowable Ampacities of Insulated Conductors Rated 0 through 2000 Volts. Students will be taught how to calculate the resistance of a given wire size using the resistance equations based on the code book values of Table 8, Chapter 9 and how to use that resistance value to calculate the voltage drop for an electrical circuit. NOTE: Please bring a code book and calculator to class. F 10/28 1 4:30-8pm 101 San Diego Collier CALCTP (California Advanced Lighting Control Training Program) ACCEPTANCE TECHNICIAN PRE-REQUISITE: Successfully completion of the CALCTP Technical or Systems course. Student must download and submit Application for CALCTP-AT Technician ( and submit to the organization listed on the application (ICF International) prior to enrollment. Once the application is approved, it must be presented to the Training Center prior to enrollment in the CALCTP-AT course. Effective January 1, 2014, the California Energy Commission adopted changes to the California building Efficiency Standards (Title 24, Parts 1 and 6) that require lighting controls and devices to be certified as properly installed and operational, prior to issuance of occupancy permits. This California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program-Acceptance Technician (CALCTP-AT) Page 2

3 certifies acceptance technician contractors and technicians. The course consists of the online prerequisites, lecture and a final exam. TTH 11/15-12/ :30pm 201 San Diego Stark/Tabbert CALCTP (California Advanced Lighting Control Training Program) TECHNICAL COURSE PRE-REQUISITE: Because the lecture and lab work moves along at a challenging pace, all participants must be equally prepared prior to enrollment. The prerequisite studies are on the Lighting Controls Association website - modules EE101, EE102, EE103, and EE201 (Approximately 12 hours). These courses can be found at Education_Express/welcome.php. For enrollment in CALCTP, applicants must present the certificates of completion for online study to the Training Center prior to enrollment in the CALCTP course. This course is divided into modules consisting of both lecture and lab activities. The module content is organized to answer the following questions about lighting controls: what they are, what they do, where they are used, and how they are installed. Each lecture contains one or more interactive components, including group discussions, device demonstrations and/or calculation exercises. The corresponding lab period, following the lecture, allows the attendee to directly apply what has been learned by installing the devices on specially-designed lab boards, under the supervision of the CALCTP-certified instructor(s). The course consists of the online prerequisites, lecture and a final exam. Take the free online courses and become a CALCTP Certified Electrician! Successful completion of this course is a pre-requisite to enroll in the CALCTP Acceptance Technician certification course. SAT 10/22-12/17* 8 8am-4:30pm 101 San Diego Stark/Tabbert *No class on 11/12, 11/24. CONFINED SPACE ENTRY This course teaches workers about the most common hazards found in confined spaces, and about the OSHA standards (29 CFR Part 1926 for construction & 29 CFR Part 1910 for the general industry) that addresses these hazards. The course also teaches the worker how to use the NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards which contains key information and data for 677 chemicals or substances commonly found in the work environment. Participants have learned about safe entry procedures, monitoring principles; entry permits procedures, proper ventilation methods, personal protective equipment, and the roles of the entrant, attendant, and entry supervisor. F 10/14 1 4:30-8pm 101 San Diego Collier DC THEORY DC theory is a 15-week, introductory course focusing on DC theory and its practical applications for the communications industry. It is presented in (15) three hour and thirty minute sessions. This course combines classroom presentations on DC theory with practical hands-on lab exercises to provide entry-level communications electricians with a requisite understanding of DC theory, including relays, resistors, series/parallel circuits, Ohm's law, and sources and characteristics of electricity. T 9/13-12/ :30pm 208 San Diego Maushardt ELECTRICAL CERTIFICATION STATE EXAM PREP This course is designed to review and reinforce electrical concepts and knowledge of the National Electric Code to prepare the student for the California Electrician Certification examination. This class will cover Codeology based on the 2011 NEC and will include extensive practice using electrical calculations and code look-up. Completion of this class will give the student knowledge to excel in the workplace and on the California Certification examination. MW 9/12-12/ :30pm 212 San Diego Wicka Page 3

4 ELECTRICAL REVIEW This class uses Mike Holt s Electrical Exam Preparation book for a comprehensive review of electrical fundamentals and the National Electric Code. Each of the sessions is stand-alone allowing students to join the class at any point throughout the course. This course covers basic electrical theory with an emphasis on its application under guidelines of the NEC. MW 9/12-10/ pm 206 San Diego Volper MW 11/07-12/ pm 206 San Diego Volper ELECTRICAL VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE TRAINING PROGRAM (EVITP) PREREQUISITE: Because the lecture and lab work moves along at a challenging pace, all participants must be a state certified general electrician. Must bring current state certification card to the Training Center prior to the first night of class. The Electrical Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program (EVITP) has been established to provide the Electrical Vehicle Transportation sector of the electrical industry, and all stakeholders, a structured platform to facilitate training and certification for the installation of Electrical Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) across Residential and Commercial/Public markets. The program addresses the technical requirements, safety imperatives and performance integrity of industry partners. Students must pass the hands-on and written to successfully complete the course. TTH 9/20-10/ :30pm 201 San Diego Stark FIRE/LIFE SAFETY PREP FOR STATE CERTIFICATION This course is designed to help you pass the California Fire/Life Safety state certification exam. W 9/21-12/ :30pm 108 San Diego Suttie FIRE/LIFE SAFETY SYSTEMS The primary objective of this course is to teach you the national codes as they apply to fire alarm systems. In addition, we will also cover code applications, wiring methods, control circuits, and troubleshooting techniques. TTH 9/21-12/ :30pm 108 San Diego Suttie FUNDAMENTALS OFNETWORKING This is an entry level course designed to expose the students to the rapidly changing field of information technology and computer networking. This course will emphasize theoretical-and practical approach to understanding computers, servers, networking devices and services, operating systems, TCP/JJ! and the OSI model, and basic security. W 9/7-12/ :30pm 110 San Diego Bevers INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRONICS Electronics is a 14-week, introductory course focusing on introductory electronics and its practical applications for the communications industry. It is presented in (14) three hour and thirty minute sessions. This course combines classroom presentations with practical hands-on lab exercises to provide entry-level Sound Technicians with a requisite understanding of AC/DC electric theory. TH 9/8-12/ :30pm 208 San Diego Maushardt METER USE AND SAFETY This class was designed to help reduce the level of risk in an electrician s daily work environment. It covers safety standards that must be maintained when performing electrical measurements. The class also clarifies meter categories and equipment inspection requirements needed to comply with NFPA 70E. F 9/23 1 4:30-8pm 101 San Diego Collier Page 4

5 MOTOR CONTROLS This course is designed to teach the student to identify and formulate starters, pilot devices and 2-wire and 3-wire control. Lab exercises are used to illuminate and clarify the principles under discussion. Additional areas covered in this course are pilot devices; overload/short circuit; manual starters; schematics; 2-wire and 3-wire control; and NEC code. TTH 9/27-10/ pm 206 San Diego San Martin TTH 10/25-11/ pm 206 San Diego San Martin NFPA-70E, ARC FLASH HAZARD AWARENESS This is a comprehensive training session that covers OSHA Standard CFR This NFPA 70E Electrical Arc Flash Hazard Awareness course will provide the student with the necessary knowledge to make sound decisions and institute safe work practices. Students will learn safe work practices and procedures and as a result, be able to recognize dangerous situations and avoid certain hazards before an incident occurs. They will also learn the safe approach distances to exposed electrical conductors. At the end of this training session, they will be able to determine the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for most situations or working condition encountered. Every student will leave this class with a much better understanding of the hazards they encounter every day and a newfound respect for electricity. SAT 9/ :30pm IVETC* Imperial Collier T 11/22-11/ :30pm 205 San Diego Collier *class will be held at the Imperial County Electrical Training Center, 2420 Imperial Business Park Drive, Imperial, CA OSHA 30/EM-385 CONSTRUCTION HAZARD AWARENESS The curriculum structure mandated by Fed OSHA is closely followed in the aspects of construction safety. This Cal/OSHA course reviews standards, procedures and policies for construction workers in California. The course also covers GHS Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, general safety awareness, required procedures, content and structure of the USACE Engineering Manual "EM Safety requirements and the 29 CFR Park 1926 Federal OSHA's Safety and Health Requirements for Construction. Register for this class on our website to find out how to receive this course textbook for free. Student is required to order the free textbook and bring to class. MW 9/12-10/ :30pm 201 San Diego Collier TTH 10/4-11/ :30pm 205 San Diego Collier RIGGING/CRANE SAFETY This course will cover risk management and the basic rigging plan; basic rigging principles and load control; loads on rigging and the rigging triangle; application of hardware and application of slings; crane safety. F 9/9 1 4:30-8pm 101 San Diego Collier STRUCTURED CABLING FOR COPPER INSTALLATIONS Upon completion of this course the student will have mastered copper installations. Hands on training is an integral part of the course. The following areas are covered: ANSI/TIA/EIA Wiring Standards and Communications sections of the National Electric Code, local area network and telecommunications cabling characteristics, topologies, media, connectorization, splicing and termination, grounding and bonding, pulling and testing of copper cable.. The student will learn the proper use of field testing equipment, electrical safety, transmission characteristics, fault location and analysis of field test results. 6 STRUCTURED CABLING FOR FIBER OPTICS Upon completion of this course the student will have learned the technical and practical aspects of fiber Optics. Hands on training is an integral part of the course. The following areas are covered: ANSI/TIA/EIA Wiring Standards and Communications sections of the National Electric Code, local area networks, telecommunication cabling characteristics, topologies, types of connectorization, splicing, terminations, pulling and testing of fiber optic cable. The student will learn the proper use of field testing equipment, electrical safety, transmission characteristics, fault location and analysis of field test results. The many types of fiber optic cabling will be covered, in addition, optical transmitters, fiber optic transmission theory, manufacturing, installation, installing connectors, spicing, loss measurement, troubleshooting and testing will be covered. M 9/12-12/ :30pm 112 San Diego Bevers SYSTEMS INTEGRATION The primary objective of this course is to teach you basic requirements for system integration; how to make it all work in the end. Where manufacturers may change, the fundamentals are the same. We will discuss codes as they relate to each system and how inspects various portions TTH 9/8-12/ :30pm 110 San Diego Bevers TELEPHONY Upon completion of this course, the student will have mastered basic analog and digital telephone circuits. Students will explorer the different telephone communication systems in the industry today as well as new technologies. An introduction to IP phone installations will be covered. An i n t r o d u c t i o n and hands on training in Microsoft Excel and Word will be taught. TH 9/22-12/ :30pm 108 San Diego Suttie WELDING I: BASICS This course is designed to develop the students welding skills and technique. All safety aspects of welding are covered as well as basic metallurgy and understanding the operation and limitations of today s welders. By practicing on the machines, each student learns all welding positions including horizontal, vertical, overhead and flat.
