1 Continuing Education A TO Z GRANT WRITING HEALTH AND WELLNESS A to Z Grant Writing is a course that will equip you with the skills and tools you need to enter the exciting field of grant writing! You ll learn how to raise needed funds by discovering how and where to look for potential funders who are a good match for your organization. You ll also learn how to network and develop true partnerships with a variety of funders, how to organize a successful grant writing campaign, and how to put together a complete proposal package. This course speaks mainly to nonprofit organizations, schools, religious institutions, and municipalities seeking grants from foundation, corporate, government, and individual donors. It s also an excellent primer for individuals wishing to become grant writing consultants or community grant writing volunteers. CULINARY FUNDAMENTALS OF CAKE DECORATING (Course I) Discover how easy and rewarding it is to decorate wonderful cakes and other desserts in this 8-hour course. You will learn all of the decorating techniques needed to create great looking cakes for birthdays or any occasion. Topics include the basics of making and coloring icing, preparing cakes, decorating techniques using appropriate tools (including the most popular border), and making a rose for a gorgeous floral cake. Supply list will be provided at first class session. Bring paper and pen for notes. Date: Tuesdays, February 27 March 20 Time: 5:00-7:00 p.m. (4 classes) Location: Bailey Center 12th Floor Fee: $55 CAKE DECORATING - Flowers and Borders (Course II) Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Cake Decorating Build on your skills taught in Course I to master many dramatic techniques to make your cakes unforgettable. You will learn to make new borders, to give your cakes incredible dimension with the addition of bold color flow decorations, and to create lovely new flowers using royal icing. For the grand finale, you will make and impressive flower basket cake using the interwoven basket weave technique. Supply list will be provided upon registration. Time will be spent exploring the camera body (bring instruction booklet). Subjects covered are ISO, aperture, shutter speeds, manual operation, composition, lighting, and image and creative dials. Instructor, Theresa Burns Date: Tuesdays, January 16 February 20 Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m. Location: Burrow 2nd floor Fee: $75 ADVANCED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Pre-requisite course-intro to Digital Photography or instructor permission. This course will explore the computer of the camera. Subjects covered are exposure compensation, computer menu, histograms, lenses, metering modes, pixels and files, elements of design. Also, capturing the best image, importing images into the computer, editing the image, sharing the image, and organizing and storing images. 2 Continuing Education DANCE (Open to WaLLi members) BALLROOM DANCING This is a beginning level Ballroom Dance class for those who want to develop and/or improve their social dance skills. The instructor will provide instructions for steps, patterns and proper techniques, including ballroom dance floor etiquette. Three to five dances will be taught depending on class make-up and progress. Session 1 Date: Tuesdays, May 8 June 12 Time: 7:00-8:00 p.m. Session 2 Date: Tuesdays Jun 19 July 24 Time: 7:00-8:00 p.m. Location: Burrow Choreography Room Fee: $40 WaLLi WALLACE STATE LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE ADVANCED BALLROOM DANCING Built upon the basic course, this class is for students who know the basics and want to expand their knowledge. This course will add one or two new steps each lesson plus polishing what they already know. 3 Training for Business & Industry CDL TRAINING COMMERCIAL TRUCK DRIVER CLASS A four-week instructional program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to drive trucks and buses, delivery vehicles, for-hire vehicles, and other commercial vehicles. Schedule: Monday-Thursday. Call for dates Fee: $2,557, plus expenses. WIA approved (Financial assistance available through the Career Center) Location: Diesel Mechanics Call for available class dates SHORT-TERM WELDING This 225-hour course provides basic instruction in oxy-fuel cutting (torch cutting) and the student s choice of shielded metal arc welding (stick welding), MIG wire welding process or TIG process. Schedule: Monday-Wednesday, 5:30-9:30 p.m. (enroll at any time) Fee: $2,000, WIA approved (Financial assistance available through the Career Center) Location: Welding Department Call for available class dates SERVSAFE TEST-PREP & CERTIFICATION SERVSAFE TEST-PREP & CERTIFICATION COURSE Participants will gain valuable knowledge in the following areas: sanitation, the flow of food, purchasing and receiving, storing foods, safety, food preparation, facilities and equipment, regulatory agencies and inspection, and crisis management. The program is designed specifically for food-handling employees of restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, daycares, and other food service professionals. The intensive 8-hour courses are conducted in two consecutive sessions, ending with the certification exam (must attend both classes to test). CNA classes will train individuals to assess patient needs, to interact effectively with the patient, and to make observations regarding a patient s condition and state of mind.
