USB Drive or Portable hard drive, online storage like I-Cloud, Google Drive, Dropbox.com etc. Course Description: This course is for people with little or no experience with Adobe Photoshop and/or InDesign. Students will become acquainted with the basic skills of these programs. Use of type, color, basic design elements and word/page processing will be covered. Students will gain an understanding of the desktop publishing applications that are available and how to successfully utilize these applications for advertising purposes. Course Overview: Topics will include correcting and enhancing digital photographs, advanced layering, masks and channels, vector drawing techniques and producing and printing consistent color with Adobe Photoshop. Setting up a document and working with pages, working with frames, importing and editing text, working with typography, color and styles, importing and modifying graphics will be covered using Adobe InDesign. To help maximize the student s learning, this class will consist of lectures, digital media Demonstrations and hand-on exercises, group learning and discussions. Course Objectives: Understanding and orientation to the operating environment
2 Ability to categorize the uses of digital imaging Understanding of the technical concepts fundamental to computer generated graphics To become familiar with the Adobe Photoshop interface and tools To become familiar with the Adobe InDesign interface and tools Ability to design and edit digital images using Adobe Photoshop Ability to design and edit digital images using Adobe InDesign Successfully integrate both software programs for efficient design purposes Ability to use computer graphics software applicable to advertising Ability to electronically input, output, store and scan visuals Projects: You will complete a total of five projects during the course of this term. Each project will be worth 100 points. The first three will be achieved using Adobe Photoshop and the last two using Adobe InDesign. Projects will be assigned in class and students are expected to work on them at this time. All work not finished or does not require use of the class is to be done outside of class (homework). In the event that you should need extra time in class or special attention, arrangements must be made in advance to allow for time needed. Tests: There will be two tests; one for each software application covered. Each will count for 100 points toward your final grade. If you miss an exam, you must have a doctor s note, or other appropriate written documentation, in order to make up the exam. I will not allow any make-up exams without a valid excuse accompanied by the appropriate written documentation. Furthermore, arrangements for make-up exams must be made within three working days of the original exam; otherwise you will receive a zero for the missed exam. Textbooks: Adobe Classroom in a Book: Photoshop CC 2015 release: ISBN Adobe Classroom in a Book: InDesign CC 2015 release: ISBN These books should be available in the campus bookstore or you can purchase them online (used will not have access to the digital files, but I will be able to provide you with those). Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Student is expected to attend all scheduled classes; to be on time (for being late to class will get points taken out of their assignments and lecture will not be repeated, will miss the valuable information; to be present for the entire class period, and if student is absent it is his/her responsibility to check with the instructor or classmates for assignments missed. You are getting one free of penalty home or class assignments. second late assignment will result in a lower grade -30%. Third late - -50% More than 3 absences will result in a failing grade. After 3 late assignments ZERO will be given. Academic Integrity: Work submitted for credit must be the product of your own effort without any unauthorized assistance. Plagiarism and/or academic dishonesty will result in the failure of the course. Plagiarism is defined as more than three consecutive words lifted from any source, including the Internet, and used without full attribution. The use of literature, notes, aids, or assistance from other sources
3 should be clearly identified with respect to all course assignments. In addition, students are expected to use resources, including books, journals, and computers only in legal and authorized ways. Other Policies: UNF has a number of policies of importance to students, including a detailed academic integrity policy, grade appeal policies, Americans with Disabilities Act policies, sexual harassment policies and others. These are available in the catalog and/or in numerous offices on campus. Students should be aware of these policies. NORTH FLORIDA NINE 1. Communicate effectively: Communicate clearly and accurately through written, oral, and mediated forms appropriate to the study of communication and professional practice. 2. Think critically: Conduct reasoned evaluation of information to assess its relevance, accuracy, purpose, and meaning. 3. Utilize appropriate technologies: Apply the tools and technologies of the communication professions in the creation and dissemination of messages appropriate for professional practice. 4. Value freedom of expression: Understand and apply the principles and laws of freedom of speech and press embodied in the First Amendment and describe their importance in a democracy Evaluation Criteria: The following criteria are assigned a percentage of the total points allowed for each project.
4 Deadlines: 10% Either it is or it isn t. Please note the date for each assignment scheduled. Your project is to be presented at the beginning of the class session for critiquing. To receive all deadline points, everything must be ready for critique otherwise it is a 0. Late projects will be accepted up to 1 week past the deadline. A zero will be given to the project after this point. Creativity: 10% The focus of this class is not on creativity, but if the work is well thought out and visually balanced your piece will be more successful. Execution: 75% Are the measurements accurate for size and placement of document? Are pages, text and graphics appropriately placed? Are vector graphics clean with smooth curves? Were images scanned or created with the appropriate resolution? Technical accuracy is extremely important! Presentation: 5% Project must be digitally presented both in pdf form for critique and in appropriate file format for grading. Specifications will be given for each assignment.
