4 GCSE INFORMATION BOOKLET This booklet has been designed to provide you with information about what your children are doing during each term and its importance in relation to their qualifications. It has not been possible to personalise each booklet so you will need to highlight the courses your son/daughter is taking. A number of subjects (most notably Science) have different pathways so make sure you highlight the relevant one. It is also a good idea to make a note of the names of your child s subject teachers. You will find information about when each course is completing controlled assessment (coursework) and when the exams are for each course. It will also allow you to see the balance of exams vs coursework for each course (i.e. GCSE Graphic Design GCSE is 60% controlled assessment and 40% final exam). Controlled Assessments Virtually all coursework has been replaced by Controlled Assessment. This means that students are given a set amount of lesson time to prepare for a piece of work. Once the preparation phase is over, the students will complete the coursework task in test conditions in school lesson time. Students are not allowed to take their work home to complete it. The opportunity to re-do or catch up the work is severely restricted. Given that the Controlled Assessments comprise a significant percentage of many GCSE courses, attendance every day at school is vital for success in Year 10 and 11. Whom can you contact about any concerns? If you are concerned about how your son/daughter is doing in one subject, the best person to contact is the subject teacher directly by phone or . If you feel that is inappropriate or your concerns are about more than one subject you should contact the Community Leader for your son/daughter s Community. They are: Broadwater: Heene: Salvington: Tarring: Amanda Jakes (ajakes@worthinghigh.net) Stuart Townsend (stownsend@worthinghigh.net) Lee Hardwick (lhardwick@worthinghigh.net) Mostefa Beda (mbeda@worthingh.net) Mock Exams Please note that all subjects regularly set mock exams throughout Y10 and Y11. The purpose of these is to gauge each student s progress against their target grades. Mock exams are vital in helping students prepare properly for formal external exams. 1

5 GCSE Art Examined by: AQA 40% exam and 60% coursework The coursework is split into two projects: the first is based on animals and decorative patterns, and the second on portraiture and identity. The exam itself consists of a self-led project that culminates in a 10 hour controlled test where a final outcome is produced. Exam/Coursework Dates and Times: Unit 1 Coursework (2 projects) September (Year 10) to December (Year 11) Unit 2 Exam January (Year11) to May (Year 11) BTEC Art Examined by: Edexcel The coursework is split into 4 vocational projects. The assessment is worth 25% of the final GCSE grade. Unit 3 Building a Business This paper is worth 50% of the final GCSE grade. Time: 1 ½ hours Questions: The paper is broken down into 3 sections: Section A consists of multiple choice and short answer questions. Students are normally advised to answer all questions and spend 40 minutes on completing them. Section B consists of short and extended answer questions based upon a case study at the start of the section. Students may be asked to analyse some financial data such as a cash flow forecast or a break even chart. Students are normally advised to answer all questions and spend 30 minutes on completing this section. Section C is very similar to section B as it consists of short and extended answer questions based upon a case study at the start of the section. Students are normally advised to answer all questions and spend 20 minutes on completing this section. When revising students can use their class notes and the Revise Edexcel GCSE Business book and remember to go online (remote login) and access the Moodle for past papers and mark schemes. Completing a past paper and then marking it using the mark scheme is an excellent way to improve your exam technique and your knowledge. Students will need a calculator for both exams. 7 GCSE Computer Science What is included in this course? This exciting GCSE gives you an excellent opportunity to investigate how computers work and how they re used, and to develop computer programming and problem-solving skills. You ll also do some fascinating in-depth research and practical work. For example, some of the current investigations look at JavaScript, encryption and assembly language programming. How will I be assessed? Unit (A45)1 - Computer systems and programming (A45)2 - Practical investigation (A45)3 - Programming project Assessment method Written paper 40% of the qualification Controlled assessment 30% of the qualification Controlled assessment 30% of the qualification Question paper that includes a mixture of short and long answer questions, some of which will require candidates to write program code. Candidates carry out a practical investigation of a topic chosen from a set of options supplied by the exam board. Candidates create solutions to computing tasks from a set of options supplied by the exam board. Should I take this course? If you take a GCSE in Computing and then go on to study the subject at A Level or university, you could have an advantage over fellow students who are picking up the subject at these higher levels. The increasing importance of information technologies means that there is likely to be a growing demand for professionals who are qualified in this field. The course is also an excellent preparation if you want to study or work in areas that use the skills you will develop, especially where they re applied to technical problems. These areas include engineering, financial and resource management, science and medicine. Are there any costs involved? Are there any excursions? A revision guide and workbook will be useful. Internet access is also very helpful. None have been specifically planned at present. Staff Contact: Mr P Slaughter: pslaughter@worthinghigh.net 4

9 GCSE English Language Examinations: AQA English Language Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing Section A: Reading (literary fiction) Section B: Writing (descriptive/narrative) AQA English Language Paper 2: Writers Viewpoints and Perspectives Section A: Reading (non-fiction and literary non-fiction) Section B: Writing (presenting a viewpoint) 1hr 45 mins: 50% 1hr 45 mins: 50% Summer 2017 Summer 2017 Other Information: Ways to support at home: Spelling, punctuation and grammar are increasingly important in the GCSE English qualifications. Students will also be examined on their technical accuracy in some other subjects (such as the humanities GCSE qualifications). Encouraging students to proofread their homework from all subjects and check the accuracy of SPaG is extremely important. Reading for pleasure is very important. Students are required to bring a reading book into school every day. Talking to them about what they are reading and encouraging them to think about how the writing is crafted to entertain a reader will help develop personal, critical responses to texts. Reading non-fiction is also useful. Students need to be reading a variety of news articles and considering how they are structured. Revision Materials: There are many revision guides now on sale for the new GCSE English. If purchasing a revision guide, it is important to look for one that is current (first teaching in 2015) and one that is AQA approved (there will be a label on the cover stating this). The following books have already been approved: Collins: AQA GCSE English Language and English Literature: ISBN Cambridge University Press: GCSE English Language for AQA Student Book Oxford University Press: AQA GCSE English Language Student Book 1: Developing the skills for learning and assessment: ISBN

33 Year 10 Work Experience Programme Worthing High School s Work Experience programme is vitally important to your child s future and involves all students in Year 10. The school s programme is designed to begin to equip your child to take advantage of opportunities in an increasingly competitive work place. It also aims to raise the profile of Worthing High School students amongst employers. Work experience provides the opportunity to explore the world of work and make decisions on possible further education and career paths. This opportunity can provide an initial link to a future employer and will also assist in building personal confidence and discovering qualities students never knew they had. Further information about the process and finding places will be sent home with students shortly. Please discuss with your child what career areas they are interested in. They will be able to make three choices. It will then be my responsibility to talk with your child about these and arrange a suitable placement where they will be able to do their work experience week. We have an extensive database of placements and contacts and will endeavour to match with one of their choices. All the places we use have been checked to ensure that all the necessary health and safety insurances are in place. If you have a personal contact who can offer a placement this would be extremely helpful. But this would be subject to a health and safety pre-placement check. Please be aware that any potential placements outside of the West Sussex area, may not be approved, or involve a cost which will have to be passed on to parents. Work Experience week will be: MONDAY 4 JULY FRIDAY 8 JULY 2016 Staff Contact: Miss Millar (Careers Adviser/Co-ordinator for Work Experience): emillar@worthinghigh.net 30
