3 Academic Skills Programmes Page 3 of 10 We offer a full range of academic courses for Key Stage 3 and beyond, delivered online with qualified specialist teachers. Students can study with us full time or for supplemental support. In addition to required academic work, students can participate in a range of extra-curricular activities and enjoy interacting with others through our secure online community. They have a complete set of resources to support them academically and socially, with guest speakers presenting regularly as part of our enrichment programme. Nisai offers a 6 stage programme, equivalent to mainstream educational provision and the national curriculum: Nisai Stages NS1 (Year 7/8) NS2 (Year 8/9) NS3 (Year 10) NS4 (Year 11) NS5 (Year 12) NS6 (Year 13) Courses Available Key Stage 3 courses in English, Maths, Science, ICT & History Key Stage 3 courses in English, Maths, Science, ICT & History GCSE courses (see below) and Level 1 Vocational Courses (see below) GCSEs (see below) and Level 2 Vocational Courses (see below) AS Levels and Level 3 Vocational Courses (see below) A2 Levels and Level 3 Vocational Courses (see below) National Curriculum Levels NC Levels 3 and 4 NC Levels 5 and 6 NC Levels 6 and 7 NC Levels 7 and 8 N/A N/A Structure: The structure of courses is for students to receive timetabled lessons plus self-paced learning activities and an assignment each week. For most courses students are registered for exams through local examination centres but Nisai does act as the examination centre in some cases for specific courses. 6 Page 6 of 10 Year 7 Transition Programme Objective: This Transition Booster Programme is specifically designed to support students who will be leaving Key Stage 2 below the expected level and who have been identified as needing support transitioning to Year 7. There are separate courses for Numeracy and Literacy, which can be started at the end of Year 6 or at the beginning of Year 7. Option 1 Students receive 2 x 30 minute lessons, per subject, per week Duration: 10 weeks Option 2 Students receive 1 x 30 minute lesson, per subject, per week Duration: 20 weeks Awarding Body: N/A No exams or qualifications. Core Curriculum Objective: This programme is unique and provides an immediate solution to education in difficult circumstances, when staffing is stretched and student needs are difficult to address. These courses are available quickly and provide a bridge in the learning journey. They provide schools with a rolling educational service around key subjects that students can be registered for on a daily basis. Students can maintain a positive structure to the day and continue with their academic progress despite interruptions such as being in an Inclusion Room, being excluded while courses are being organised, or being taken into care. Key Stage 3 or Key Stage 4 Maths, English and Science lessons covering core topics are provided. The programme is run in cycles, with courses being repeated on a six week basis. Comprises of up to 3 lessons per day; each lesson lasts for 1 hour. Please note that each day is unique and standalone. day, one subject or multiple days and subjects. A student can join in for just one Duration: 6 week curriculum. Awarding Body: N/A No exams or qualifications. Custom Courses Objective: Custom courses are available in Key Stage 3, GCSE and AS/A Level subjects. These are important to students who need extra help, for exam preparation or for students who are not on track. We offer a bespoke programme tailored to meet the specific requirements identified by a school or college. Structure: The number of lessons per week and length of the course are designed to meet the custom requirements. Minimum of 6 students will be required for a custom course. 7 Working Skills Programmes Nisai provides a range of non-academic programmes leading to GCSE equivalent qualifications. Page 7 of 10 Functional Skills - GCSE Equivalent Courses We call these courses our Nisai Passport 2 Learning (NP2L) courses. At Level 1 and Level 2, the following courses are equivalent to GCSEs. These essential skills provide what is needed for life, learning and work. NP2L ITQ Level 1 and Level 2 o o o o o The IT User Skills courses enable learners to achieve an ITQ qualification, which aims to equip individuals with the IT user skills needed for full participation in employment and society. Running at Level 1 and Level 2, the courses comprise of a variety of topics including , Internet, desktop, imaging, presentation software, spreadsheets, and audio software. This qualification recognises the needs of employers for ICT qualifications that reflect real-world skills, and the challenges of workplace learning enable recognition of the skills that employers want across the range of levels. Free specific software is required for this course and students will need to install this before starting the course. Students struggling to meet the coursework requirements for a qualification may be offered the opportunity to sit the Edexcel Functional Skills ICT examination if this can be arranged with the customer and exam centre. 8 Page 8 of 10 Employability Skills Objective: These courses are designed as an intensive introduction to workplace skills. The courses run at various times of the year so please check for availability. Alternatively the programme can be organised and run for groups of students on request. Please note: Level 1 courses are for post 14 learners and Level 2 are for post 16 learners. Duration: Programme duration depends on the weekly number of hours of teacher contact time and this will vary according to demand. Typically students require 12 weeks to achieve an Award and 38 weeks to achieve a Certificate qualification. However, these qualifications can be achieved in shorter time frames if weekly contact time is increased. Structure: Students receive timetabled lessons per week of 30 minutes each. In addition, they will complete self-paced learning activities lasting minutes and an assignment which will take 30 to 60 minutes. The number of lessons and activities is negotiable. Awarding body: OCN London Award or Certificate in Employability Level 2 Award or Certificate in Progression Level 1 Modules Include: Self-Development Communication in the Workplace Customer Care Solving Problems in the Workplace Teamwork Skills Vocational Subject Courses Objective: Our Vocational Courses are available at our Nottingham Learning Hub where students can incorporate hands-on studies for qualifications along with functional skills or academic studies. These courses can also be offered at your site and uniquely offer our online academic courses linked to vocational skills. Courses: Childcare, Construction, Hair & Beauty, and Sport Qualifications: Skills for Employment and Further Learning (SEFL) (QCF) Qualifications including options for an award, an extended award, a certificate, an extended certificate or a diploma. Levels: Level 1/Level 2 Awarding Body: AIM Structure: These courses are taught face-to-face at the Nisai Learning Hub. Some students attend full time, others part time. The courses are a mix of practical and theoretical work. There are no exams, just coursework (portfolios of evidence). Duration: Duration depends on number of hours per week possible
9 Page 9 of 10 Personal Skills Programmes Our Personal Skills Programmes provide important support to individuals in selfdevelopment. These courses can be accessed within a school setting or from a student s home. Some of these courses are used for intervention when a student is off-course academically due to underlying personal issues. Behaviour and the ability to communicate well are fundamental skills to support academic progression. Additional bespoke courses are available. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Objective: We offer a range of courses to help learners improve English language skills. The Nisai ESOL courses cover speaking, listening, reading and writing. Structure: Students are expected to attend 1 hour of live lessons per week and complete up to 3 ½ hours of self-paced study assignments weekly. Duration: Standard course lasts for approximately 24 weeks. Awarding Body: There are a range of University of Cambridge ESOL qualifications that can be achieved, ranging from A1 to C1 on the Common European Framework of Reference. Awarding Body Title National Qualification Framework Level Common European Framework Reference ESOL Skills for Life Entry Level 1 A1 KET Entry Level 2 A2 PET Entry Level 3 B1 FCE Level 1 B2 CAE Level 2 C1 Dealing with Strong Emotions This course provides support for students with behavioural or emotional issues who need extra help in overcoming barriers. The course is aimed at young people who are raising concerns in school over issues with anger management and the course aims to work through a coaching framework using evidence-based anger management intervention to give young people access to anger management activities without the stigma associated with specialist interventions. Structure: Students receive 2 timetabled lessons per week of 30 minutes each. Duration: 10 weeks. Awarding Body: N/A No exams or qualifications. Study Skills This course is designed to help students to develop good study skills. There are units on: preparation; planning; note taking; and revision techniques. Structure: 2 x 30 min lessons per week Duration: Standard course lasts for approximately 10 weeks Minimum of 6 students will be required for this course.
10 Page 10 of 10 5 Day Intervention Personal Development Objective: This programme is unique and provides an immediate solution to education in difficult circumstances, when staffing is stretched and student needs are difficult to address. These courses are available quickly and provide a bridge in the learning journey. They may be used in Inclusion Rooms, where students change on a regular basis, or with Looked After Children, with whom the need for provision can arise very suddenly. The programme covers the following daily topics: Monday - Developing Assertiveness: This course focuses on communication and on how poor communication leads to passive and aggressive behaviour. Tuesday - Developing Strengths and Transforming Weaknesses: Students will be introduced to the concepts of strengths and weaknesses. They will be encouraged to identify their strengths and consider weaknesses as areas for development. Wednesday - Career Opportunities: This topic encourages students to identify their aspirations, to consider their likes and dislikes and to explore career opportunities. Thursday - Overcoming Barriers: This topic helps students to explore barriers to learning, career and life choices and to consider how these barriers might be addressed. Friday - Positive Decision Making: Students will learn about decision making and consider the abilities they need to make good decisions. Structure: Each day has unique content focused on student aspirations, self-awareness and attitude, aimed at providing an in depth review of a student s personal skills, areas of strength and areas for further development. Each topic day is unique and can be taken independently or as part of the whole. A student can join in for just one day or multiple days. Each Topic lesson is delivered for a school day (5 hours) Duration: Daily from 09:30 to 14:30 (lunch 12:35-13:05) Awarding Body: N/A No exams or qualifications.
