1 Department of August 28, 2015 To: Dean Grasso From: Gene Bressler, Professor and Department Head RE: Changes to the Masters of Curriculum I was asked by your staff to write a brief memo stating the reason(s) for submitting many course actions concerning the First Professional Track 3 Masters of (MLA) Curriculum in advance of the Administrative Board meeting scheduled for September 10. Following is background information and the reasons for the requested actions, tables summarizing the course actions, and detailed information about curriculum requirements, delivery structure, and a listing of required and elective courses delineated by curriculum area. This February 2016, the first professional Track 3 MLA program is scheduled to undergo its recurrent 6-year reaccreditation review. Therefore, It is time for the course and curriculum revisions to be formally implemented. Background The Department of has delivered two accredited first professional degree programs for many years the Bachelors of (BLA) and the Masters of Landscape (MLA). Approimately 6 years ago the College of Design moved to phase out the BLA program over 5 years in order to enable students currently in the program to complete their entire course of study. The decision to phase out the BLA program was predicated upon it having consistently low applicant and subsequent enrollment numbers over a sustained period while during the same period the MLA program continued to annually receive applicants and maintain an average cohort population averaging 55 students per year. Our plan going forward during the net 3-5 years is to increase the graduate student population in both the first professional and post professional, (Track 3 and Track 2) categories, respectively, to students depending on resources. Reason for proposed Course Actions Moving to a graduate-only program has given the department faculty, students, and eternal constituents, opportunities to strategically revise the accredited first professional MLA degree curriculum and courses. As a result: A number of new graduate level courses that address advanced topics have been developed, delivered, and vetted as Special Topics courses. A number of eisting courses have been substantially revised and repositioned in the curriculum structure to enhance graduate level epectations and learning outcomes. Changes to the Masters of Curriculum, August 28,

2 A number of undergraduate level professional courses have been identified for deletion from the department catalog. A number of proposed actions to delete, modify, or delete courses have been entered into the NC State Curriculum Inventory Management System (CIMS) to be reviewed in accordance with the proper Workflow procedure. Three documents follow for your review: Table 1, Courses Action Summary: MLA Courses lists actions to add or or modify an eisting course. Modifications indicated include items such as: o Revised course description, learning o New course number o New course title Table 2, Course Action Summary: All courses lists actions for eisting courses to be removed, modified, or remain, and the new courses to be added to the department course catalog. Modifications indicated to eisting courses include items such as: o Revised course description, learning o New course number o New course title Detailed descriptions of the new MLA First Professional Degree Curriculum Requirements that includes: o MLA First Professional MLA Degree Curriculum Requirements o o MLA First Professional Degree Curriculum Semester Display with footnote annotations and new course numbers MLA First Professional Degree Curriculum broken out by curriculum area Our immediate plan during the net week is to continue submitting course modifications for Workflow processing and to work with the College of Design s Course and Curriculum Committee in response to their questions and suggestions. I am similarly available to meet with you and your staff as the requested course actions move through the Workflow Process. Thank you. Changes to the Masters of Curriculum, August 28,
