2 Twin Cities Campus Product Design B.S. DHA Product Design College of Design Program Type: Baccalaureate Requirements for this program are current for Spring 2017 Required credits to graduate with this degree: 120 Required credits within the major: 89 Degree: Bachelor of Science The Product Design program is a creative, interdisciplinary major that blends elements of design, engineering, business, and humanities. This program provides methods and tools for inventing our future in the form of innovative objects, systems, and services. In addition to design fundamentals, this program is strengthened by the sciences. Combining these disciplines allows students to design desirable products and services (both physical and digital) that are also functional, marketable, and human-centered. This program enables students to take ideas from concept to reality and succeed in market. Program Delivery This program is available: via classroom (the majority of instruction is face-to-face) Admission Requirements Freshman and transfer students are usually admitted to pre-major status before admission to this major. A GPA above 2.0 is preferred for the following: 2.50 already admitted to the degree-granting college 2.50 transferring from another University of Minnesota college For information about University of Minnesota admission requirements, visit the Office of Admissions website. Required prerequisites Pre-major coursework Courses to be completed prior to portfolio review to attain full major status. Currently there are no product design or industrial design programs in the state of Minnesota as well as the neighboring states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Nebraska. In the greater metropolitan area of the Twin Cities there are dozens of companies designing products. A highlighted list of such companies includes Target, 3M, Stratasys, Medtronic, General Mills, Starkey, Imation, Boston Scientific, and Landscape Structures. As there are no local degree-offering programs, these companies are hiring their product designers from other states. There is an industry demand for such a program. Internally, there is also a demand for such a program from the students. The mission of the product design program is to create innovators by giving students the skills to take their own ideas from concept to reality. Product design is about creating the future in the form of new objects, systems and services. It is inherently creative and interdisciplinary blending design, engineering, business, and other humanities. The core product design classes introduce students to methods of generating, visualizing, and prototyping new product concepts. These core product design classes are hands-on and project based. Some core classes are taught through the College of Science & Engineering, Carlson School of Management and the College of Liberal Arts. These classes support the interdisciplinary nature of the field and also allow the students to gain experience working on projects with students of different skills and backgrounds. At the University of Minnesota, Product Design began as a graduate minor, effective Fall Courses were offered at both the graduate and undergraduate level to ensure sufficient enrollment in classes. The high demand from undergraduate students led to an undergraduate minor in Product Design in Fall As of Spring 2015, there were 125 students in the Product Design undergraduate minor. To determine need and demand for the Bachelor of Science degree, three focus groups were held summer 2015 to obtain feedback from the following stakeholders: students, industry, and faculty/staff. The College of Design Student Services staff was asked for their recommendations. Refinements based on these meetings were made to strengthen the original proposal. Currently, there are no product design or industrial design programs in Minnesota. Companies such as Target and 3M who specialize in product development hire their designers from outside of the state. Developing this undergraduate product design major is the next phase in the development of Product Design at the University of Minnesota. At the University, we have colleges of engineering, design, management and humanities, which make up the pillars of product development. This is an opportunity to bridge the unique strengths of these colleges and develop a very strong, interdisciplinary product design program that can attract students from Minnesota and beyond. This type of product design program is quite rare being modeled after the industrial design engineering programs of northern Europe. This unique program will attract talented students from across the country. Based on feedback from industry, a few additional courses are required to offer product design as a major. Effective Fall 2015, we have added one full-time, Professional Academic faculty. Another position tenure/tenure-track -- is currently in the search process. Once the tenure-track position is filled, the program will have two full time tenure track faculty members and one P/A to support Product Design majors and minors. If approved for a soft rollout for Fall 2016, we plan to offer the option to current undergraduate minors, to have 20 students enrolled the first year Thereafter, our enrollment goal is 40 students each fall. We can also assess the program through observation of industry placement and internships. We expect students that complete this major will be more likely to receive product design related jobs during summer and after matriculation.
