Lessons learned MCNC s video services update Peter Janca MCNC 4 October 2011 h
Session summary Focus is on 6 core lessons learned during Addition of Cisco s TelePresence CTS Move to self-scheduling, and Incorporation of soft clients We are still learning Via own experiences, and Via collaboration with the community As vendors continue to update products Except as part of above, session will not be covering: Costs or pricing** Technology/architecture **NOTE: Any pricing mentioned is for illustration only. It is based on estimates of current suggested retail pricing, and does not include installation, maintenance, and possible significant discounts. 2 9/30/2011
The six core lessons learned-so far 1. The technology works Its application is the challenging part It is evolving (as the Cisco-Tandberg integration continues) 2. Bandwidth matters mostly 3. The soft client cost-usage model is still being determined 4. There is a mostly-new lexicon of terms and concepts 5. The technology fits the enterprise model Service provider model=not-so-much 6. Service moves from country store to Nordstrom's or is it electronic banking? 3 9/30/2011
Introduction MCNC-the North Carolina regional network service provider--ncren: All 17 UNC colleges/universities/school of Science & Math All 58 community colleges All 115 LEAs (school districts) Private colleges and universities such as Wake Forest, Elon, Duke 25+ local public health services Over 2500 miles of owned and leased fiber Upon conclusion of the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program MCNC in video: Primary users: UNC colleges/universities/school of Science & Math Roughly 100 registered video endpoints, using H.323 standards, another estimated 150 other endpoints to which we connect No network bandwidth restrictions codec is the limiting factor (4-6mb each way) 4 9/30/2011
MCNC NCREN network Over 2500 miles of fiber once BTOP complete 5 9/30/2011
North Carolina Research and Education Community 6 9/30/2011
What did we do? Added TelePresence CTS Added customer self-scheduling Added Movi soft-client capability 7 9/30/2011
Why? TelePresence CTS: Customers adding CTS screens now Native CTS could not connect to standards-based conferencing Adding MCNC infrastructure allows CTS support and connection to standards conferencing Self scheduling Manual method unsustainable Suitable technology now available Movi soft clients Known and growing demand Same CTS infrastructure can be used Determine how/whether it makes sense for MCNC to provide clients and support 8 9/30/2011
MCNC video service: Pre-update 9 9/30/2011
TIP Blade MCNC video service: Post-update Added Devices TMS = TelePresence Mgt Suite TIP BLADE = TelePresence Blade CUCM = Cisco Unified Comm Mgr VCS-E = Vid Cntrl Server-Expressway VCS-C = Vid Cntrl Server-Control CUCM TMS VCS-E VCS-C 10 9/30/2011
Lesson 1: The technology works The hardware/software purchased performs as described We have gotten excellent support from our vendors The learning is in the application, for example Management among SD, HD, CTS MCU ports Who can schedule? What can they schedule? How do we incorporate frequent updates? 11 9/30/2011
Scheduling example
Scheduling room selection
Scheduling time selection
Scheduling--confirmation
Sample message from scheduler Note: 16 9/30/2011 Note: Recipients using Outlook can easily add the meeting to their personal calendars.
Outlook calendar example 17 9/30/2011
Remember this slide? Note room list
It is the application of the technology... Management among SD, HD, CTS MCU ports Who can schedule? What can they schedule? Notice the gap between booked (green) and used (blue) 19 9/30/2011
Lesson 2: Bandwidth matters mostly Current inter-campus and intra-campus wired connections have plenty of bandwidth for video today Anything else is chancy and service quality is affected Variables include bandwidth, jitter, latency, path length Wireless connections can be marginal Bandwidth to off-site locations is highly variable Connections to homes (distance learning) and Connections to hotels/mcdonalds, etc are especially challenging Testing becomes mandatory 20 9/30/2011
Lesson 3: The soft client cost-usage model is still being determined Primary concern is MCU capacity What is the mix between point-to-point and multipoint? MCU capacity required only for multipoint What is the distribution around time-of-day? Relatively flat from 8-6 requires fewer MCU ports than the two peak diurnal curve seen in classical cloud computing What is the distribution among group sizes? Small learning teams (fewer than 10) might be served with free available services Classroom models expand MCU requirements by about one order of magnitude 21 9/30/2011
Lesson 4: There is a whole, mostlynew lexicon of terms and concepts TMS VCS-C VCS-E CUCM etc, etc... And it keeps changing /30/2011
MCNC video service: Pre-update 23 9/30/2011
TIP Blade MCNC video service: Post-update Added Devices TMS = Telepresence Mgt Suite TIP BLADE = TelePresence Blade CUCM = Cisco Unified Comm Mgr VCS-E = Vid Cntrl Server-Expressway VCS-C = Vid Cntrl Server-Control CUCM TMS VCS-E VCS-C 24 9/30/2011
Lesson 5: The technology fits the enterprise model service provider, not so much Example: Adoption of soft clients increases the number of known possible endpoints to thousands This higher volume demands more automated processes for customer care/billing, user authentication Cisco offers connection to Active Directory But only one Active Directory.... today 25 9/30/2011
Lesson 6: Service moves from country store... to Country store The storekeeper knows all his customers, they know him; knows what they want, etc. this has been MCNC Nordstrom s Image of a company which handles volume, yet helps each customer feel fully and personally served On-line banking (or Walmart) Illustrating a real serve yourself 26 9/30/2011
Lessons learning Will there be significant use in synchronous distance learning? When? How can we do this cost-effectively? Bandwidth management? Alternative MCU models? Will today s generation of students favor faster, easier? Versus scheduled, quality, reasonably-sized screens? If yes, are there adequate sources? Will other users (healthcare, for example) have significantly different usage requirements? 27 9/30/2011
The six core lessons learned-so far 1. The technology works Its application is the challenging part 2. Bandwidth matters mostly 3. The soft client cost-usage model is still being determined 4. There is a whole, mostly-new lexicon of terms and concepts 5. The technology fits the enterprise model; Service provider model=not-so-much 6. Service moves from country store to Nordstrom's or is it electronic banking? 28 9/30/2011
