2 Introduction Wireless internet is a very common technique that using everywhere. Wireless Media means not tied to any wires and cables. It s more like a two-way radio communication. A computer's wireless adapter translates data into a radio signal and transmits it to the router; the router receives the signal and decodes it; then the router could send the information to the internet by a wired Ethernet connection. On the other hand, the signal from the wired Ethernet could trace back the signal by the router. Its convenience made this technique very popular these years. Although people are pleased with the benefits that the wireless network brings to them, more and more security issues in legal, ethical, social, culture, blast to people and must be overcome in the future. In the following passages, I would introduce the basic technology of this development, and show its advantages and disadvantages in different field. All in all, I think it s a serious subject that people need to find out an appropriate way to use wireless internet in order to enjoy it while avoiding causing problems. Background and benefits According to Marshall Brain and Tracy Wilson, (2011) To create a wireless network with a wireless access point, we need a wireless router, a port to conncet to cable or DSL modem, an Ethernet hub, firewall and wireless access point. Most routers provide coverage for about 100 feet (30.5 meters) in all directions, although walls and doors can block the signal. If your home is very large, you can buy inexpensive range extenders or repeaters to increase your router's range. Steinberg (2008) found, wireless have advantages, such easy to set up and inexpensive (p.184) I remember that in my dorm, there is only one network connection for me and my roommate to use Internet in bedroom, so one of us have to stay at living room for using internet. Since the Page 2

3 wireless network, we can have several people use internet at the same place and same time. Wireless technology releases us from copper wires. A user can have a notebook computer, PDA, Pocket PC, Tablet PC, or just a cell phone and stay online anywhere a wireless signal is available. It is very convenience. On campus, we have wireless at almost every building, so I can get online easily and faster. I do not need to bring my wire with me every day for using Internet. Moreover, the wireless network stimulates economy s development, especially cell phone career. Take around our daily life, most people s phone has more and more function, such as electronic books, GPS, and access online and so on. For example, the Iphone4 has power function and is very expensive. However, it is the most popular cell phone is us even in the world. The wireless technology creates huge value. Legal and Ethical Issues Although we marvel at the power and convenience provided to us by technology we should also be thinking about some legal and ethical issue. Even D. Brown (2006) stated, some people create their own wireless at home, and they share with their neighbors, in order to reduce the cost. It is easy to become a hotspot operate, but it is difficult to control the potential risk (p.12). Internet Service Provider Prohibit people to share the internet connection with others. If the operator of a hotspot shares the internet, the hotspot will be subject to termination of his or her upstream internet access. There are some ethical problems; wireless network is using radio to transfer information, so it is easy to be attacked. People who want to steal your information that is very easy. Dong, Curtmola and Nita Rotaru stated, pollution attack is a sever security threat (2011). According to Dong Curtmola and Nita Rotaru, Corrupted packets propagate in an epidemic manner, depleting network resources and significantly decreasing throughput. Pollution attacks are particularly dangerous in wireless networks, where attackers can easily inject packets Page 3

4 or compromise devices due to the increased network vulnerability Potential benefits Wireless network gives us lot of convenience. More and more people apply for the wireless network. Since the wireless, cell phone industrial has a revolution. Most of phone has the function of access online. Using phone access online, it is a social culture. Phone become more expensive and phone bill become bigger, so people spend more money. Milenković, A., Otto, C., & Jovanov, E. (2006) stated, Recent technological advances in sensors, low-power integrated circuits, and wireless communications have enabled the design of low-cost, miniature, lightweight, and intelligent physiological sensor nodes. These nodes, capable of sensing, processing, and communicating one or more vital signs, can be seamlessly integrated into wireless personal or body networks (WPANs or WBANs) for health monitoring. Using wireless to monitor people s physiology, it less cheap than labors, and it has less mistake than human works. People who has heart attack take a little machine heart care with them. The little machine send radio signal to the Emergency receptor center. Compare with make phone call, it save a lot of time. Even though, people are at that time, cannot make phone call to save his or her life. Security Concerns With the development of technology, people have more and more communications and transactions. The physical distances become closer and closer. Therefore, our privacy and security is weaker and weaker. Our phone is online and wireless network, so it is possible that people who wants to catch us information. Or even the private information. A Security is actually one of the most important issues for telecommunications. One of the main issues in the field of securing wireless information exchanging is the initial common knowledge Page 4

5 between source and destination. A shared secret is normally mandatory in order to decide the encryption (algorithm or code or key) of the information stream. It is usual to exchange this common a priori knowledge by using a secure channel. Nowadays a secure wireless channel is not possible. The information is encrypted by means of a private keys, and the sender and receptor must know the keys. One of the main weak points about security is the private key exchanging interval. The key cannot be public and cannot be known a priori. The problem is how to exchange this private key through a totally secure wireless channel. (Milenković, A., Otto, C., & Jovanov, E. 2006, p.330) Facing security problems, there are three mainly method to secret: According to Milenković, A., Otto, C., & Jovanov, E (2006) Secret channel capacity, Public and Private Keys and PHY Security. Secret Channel Capacity is that physical-layer built-in security is the capacity of the transmission channel when built-in security is guaranteed without relying on upper layer data encryption. (p330). Otherwise, you can set your own username and password, in order to, avoid someone use your wireless network without permit. It is likes everything has two sides. Wireless plays an important role in our life today. It is a common and useful technology today. It brings us convenience, and also legal, security problems appears. Page 5
