Unlocking the Power of the Physical Infrastructure UCISA-NG Chris Frazer PTS Consulting 12 th October
Intelligent Buildings The use of integrated technological building systems, communications and controls to create a building and its infrastructure which provides the owner, operator and occupant with an environment which is flexible, effective, comfortable and secure. Continental Automated Building Association (CABA; 2
Introduction Buildings have a huge impact on our environment and natural resources. Public awareness Government legislation Building regulations and schemes (e.g. BREEAM and LEED) Save energy and resources The need to provide practical, comfortable, sustainable and inspirational places to work 3
The case for Intelligent Buildings In recent history buildings weren t designed with efficiency in mind Today s buildings must be designed better than ever before Systems play a crucial role in optimising building performance Buildings must be more Intelligently designed and operated Managing interrelationships between the building, its components, its surroundings, and its occupants Buildings consume more than 40% of all the energy produced in the world - University of Reading Only 20% of a building s total energy consumption comes from its construction. 80% is used in running its systems - University of Reading 4
Green Buildings Green Buildings are Intelligent by design Architects have their own perspective on what makes an Intelligent Building Types of Materials Build envelope Orientation Performance The aims for all are the same: Save energy / lower life cycle costs Provide a better working environment Attractive to Landlord and Tenants Sustainable and minimise impact on the environment PTS Viewpoint: Only sound Architectural design and Technology working together result in a truly exceptional Intelligent Buildings 5
The Future is Now Good for business, good for the environment Broers Building - University of Cambridge 6
Other Considerations PTS viewpoint: Would you like to work here? 7
The Role of Systems Building are run by various systems within the building Systems exist as silos running independently of all the others Lighting, Security, HVAC, Life Safety and Power Systems Separate cabling media, power, containment and locations Independent systems are unable to work as effectively 8
Unifying the Physical Infrastructure 9
Internet Protocol (IP) Convergence using IP and Ethernet enabled devices IP is an open protocol system for data communications Widespread adoption in both Building Technologies and IT Intelligent Buildings leverage IP which requires a Unified Infrastructure 10
Physical Infrastructure The Physical Infrastructure enables IP communications Providing, enabling and supporting through various layers of subsystems of both IT and Building Systems The underlying infrastructure is the physical media i.e. cabling for all wired and wireless devices 11
Power over Ethernet (PoE) PoE - electrical power along with data over standard twisted-pair cable IEEE802.3af PoE standard provides the capability to power devices to max of 12.95W IEEE 802.3at PoE Plus standard provides the capability to power devices to max of 29.5W 12
Power over Ethernet (PoE) The justification of cable type is no longer just about bandwidth capabilities PoE Plus is used for powering both IT and Building Devices PoE Plus generates heat in the installed cabling plant Category 6A F/UTP cabling systems dissipate almost 50% more heat than Category 5e cabling Category 7A S/FTP cabling systems dissipate at least 60% more heat than Category 5e cabling Category 6A or higher-rated cabling will be a minimum standard to support future PoE Plus applications 13 1 Jacket 2 Stranded twisted pr 3 Spacer Category 5e UTP 24 AWG 1 Jacket 2 Shield-braid 3 Shield-foil 4 Solid twisted pr 5 Drain wire Category 7A S/FTP 22 AWG
IEEE802.3af PoE Power Supply <13W IP-based telephony (IPT) equipment IP-based fixed security cameras Wireless access points (WAPs) Radio frequency identification (RFID) tag readers Building automation systems (e.g. thermostats, smoke detectors, alarm systems, security access card readers Print servers, and bar code scanners 14
IEEE 802.3at PoE Plus Power Supply <30W Ultra Portable Laptop computers Thin clients (typically running web browsers or remote desktop software applications) Organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays Security cameras with Pan/Tilt/Zoom capabilities Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) Biometric sensors 15
Unified Physical Infrastructure Centrally managed and controlled One cable to carry data and power up to 100m Twisted Pair Cabling and Ethernet connector (RJ45) is widely adopted Consolidation of equipment and space Increased security (both logical and physical) Centralised backup power 16
Summary More exceptional buildings shall be constructed year on year Buildings more Intelligent through both design and the use of technology Intelligent Buildings leverage IP which requires a Unified Infrastructure IP based technology are open based systems Twisted Pair Cabling is the medium for IP Convergence PoE is reducing the energy consumption of IT and Building Systems PTS viewpoint We often hear the term a Connected World, increasingly we will hear the term Connected, Smart and Intelligent Buildings 17
