2 Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of angers, Warnings, and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. anger: anger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided. 1. ECRIPTION 1.01 The 3 M (multiplexer/demultiplexer) module serves as an interface between the oneplex Broadband ystem chassis, 1 input/output signals and an external electrical 3 cross-connect signal. The 3 signal used is an inter-office signal, and the 3 M module is not protected for connections outside the central office or enclosure. When two 3 M modules (working and protect) are used in the oneplex Broadband ystem chassis, they are interconnected by a splitter/combiner located on the back panel of the chassis The 3 M module performs the following functions: emultiplexes the incoming 3 signal into 28 1 output signals. Multiplexes 28 incoming 1 signals into a 3 output signal. Transports both M13 and C-Bit parity formats. 3 network loopback via MP oftware control. Provides equipment protection switching. oftware controlled 3 transmit BO and receive equalization The working and protect 3 M modules provide Automatic Protection witching (AP) for the equipment only. AP is non-revertive and bidirectional, and may be forced or disabled using the front panel switches or through the MP software. The working (online) 3 M module will switch to the protect (off-line) module when any one or a combination of the following conditions occur: tandby (Off-line) module detects a failure in the on-line module. On-line module detects a receive 3 oss-of-ignal (O) or Out-Of-Frame (OOF) condition and the off-line (standby) module does not. On-line module detects a transmit 3 loss of signal. 3 1.04 AP is completed within 50 msec of the decision to switch. After three automatic switches occur within a 24-hour period, AP is locked out. AP can be enabled again using the front panel interface, Craft Interface, T1, or TBO. 2. INTAATION 2.01 Installation consists of unpacking and installing the 3 M module, then verifying that it is functioning properly. se the following procedure to install a 3 M module: Caution: Modules can be damaged by static electrical discharge. Before handling modules, wear an anti-static discharge wrist strap to prevent damage to electronic components. Place modules in anti-static packing material when transporting or storing. When working on modules, always place the module on an approved anti-static mat that is electrically grounded. 1. If necessary, open or remove the front cover of the oneplex Broadband ystem. 2. Open the shipping carton and carefully unpack the 3 M module from its protective packing material. 3. Refer to chassis markings above the module slots (see Figure 1), and install the working 3 M module in the full-height slot marked MW. Align the card edges of the 3 M module with the mounting slot card guides. se the injectors to press the 3 M module into the chassis. If excessive resistance is encountered during installation, remove the module and check for obstructions or improper alignment. Page , AC Telecommunications, Inc.

4 5. Press the MPTT/AP switch and verify that all 3 M Es are lit. If Yes, continue with tep 6. If No, replace 3 M module and go to tep Verify that the TAT E and ONINE E remain lighted GREEN. If no 3 signal is present, the 3 O E will be RE. If Yes, continue with tep 7. If No, replace 3 M module and go to tep Will this system be configured as 3 Protected? If Yes, continue with tep 8. If No, you are finished with this procedure. 8. Refer to chassis markings, and locate the slot marked MP (for the the protect 3 M module). 9. Remove 3 M module from protective packaging and inspect the module for damage. 10. Align the card edges of the 3 M module with the mounting slot card guides. se the injectors to press the 3 M module into the chassis. If excessive resistance is encountered during installation, remove the module and check for obstructions or improper alignment. 11. Press the MPTT/AP switch and verify that all 3 M Es are lit. If Yes, continue with tep 12. If No, replace 3 M module and go to tep Verify that the TAT E is GREEN and ONINE E is OFF. If no 3 signal is present, the 3 O E will be RE. 5 3. OPERATION 3.01 The front panel of the 3 M module has three switches and five E indicators (see Figure 2). 6 Table 1. 3 M Module Indicators and Controls INICATOR COOR ECRIPTION TAT Green Indicates that 3 M is operating normally. Yellow Indicates that module is initializing or performing self test. Red Indicates a fault on the module. Off No power to the module. PBK Yellow Indicates that 3 signal is looped back to the network. ON-INE Green Indicates that the 3 transmitter is on line. Off Indicates that the 3 transmitter is off line. 3 FAI Red Indicates a oss-of-ignal or Out-Of-Frame condition. AP OCKOT/FORCE Red Indicates that protection is locked out. Yellow Indicates that protection switching is forced. Off Indicates that protection switching is enabled. CONTRO ENABE MPTT/AP REET ECRIPTION Pressed with other switches, allows service-affecting operations. Press to test all Es on the 3 M module. Press with the Enable switch on the Protect (standby) module to force the modules to protection switch. Press with the Enable switch on the on-line module to disable AP. Pressing the REET pushbutton performs a soft reset of the software on the 3 M module. This does not interrupt the flow of data. Pressing the REET and the ENABE pushbutton at the same time performs a software reset and a hardware reset of all control registers. ata flow is interrupted. 4.
