3 SHV (8K) Transmission between Brazil and Japan The possibility of a new project for FIFA Brazil World Cup was first discussed between RNP and NTT in the Autumn of 2012 in Philadelphia. After the preliminary transmission test between Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo in March 2013, we agreed to start the project with relevant partners. First actual SHV transmission test between the two countries (Loopback of Tokyo-Rio-Tokyo) was carried out in June One way transmission from Tokyo to Brasilia was done on the occasion of RNP Forum in August 2013, and then from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo on the occasion of NTT R&D Forum in February Through the tests we obtained performance evaluation data and know-how need to create a reliable transmission link for such advanced applications over multiple domain shared networks. We were able to establish very reliable transmission paths between the sites both in Brazil and Japan (just a couple of days before the opening day!) and all of the planned SHV transmissions were very successful. 4 How to establish Reliable Communications Path (over multi-domain heterogeneous networks) Target Establish a very reliable communications path between Brazil and Japan on multi-layer / multi-domain systems consisting of many heterogeneous elements. Approach Make a simplified model consisting of smaller number of subsystems (bundles of densely connected elements which can be separated from other elements). Augment reliability of each subsystem by adding redundancy, etc. Make reliable communications paths with redundancy between the subsystems. Then deploy detailed network monitoring environment. And use application layer error control mechanisms (LDGM-FEC) with multi-path redundant transmission capability. [ 4 ]

11 Summary SHV (8K) public viewing of the FIFA Brazil World Cup games was planned by NHK, NTT, GLOBO and RNP in Two sites in Brazil and four sites in Japan were selected for the PV and connected to the 8K video source in Rio de Janeiro with highly reliable communications links including R&E networks. We applied a set of complementary error control mechanisms with physically distributed data packet monitoring system. All 9 live transmissions of FIFA World Cup games were successful without any quality degradation cased by network performance problems. It was demonstrated that shared IP networks can be used for transmitting critical application data if we apply effective error control mechanisms and detailed monitoring system. And it is very efficient. Cultural differences existed, but we could collaborate successfully. Collaboration among international R&E network and organizations in different field is always stimulating and rewarding. [ 11 ]
