How to achieve low energy cooling in high density data centres whilst minimising water usage Stuart Kay Business Development Director After Adiabatics
Global water crisis Evolution of data centre cooling - Cooling Towers - Air side optimisation - Adiabatic cooling Introduction to water side optimisation Benefits
Global Water Crisis Only 1% of the world s water is useable Energy demand is set to increase 40% in the next 20 years, putting increased pressure on water supplies The UN estimates that $50-60 Billion needs to be spent annually between now and 2030 to avoid future water shortages In 2015 the World Economic Forum in Davos listed water crises for the first time as the world s leading threat Day Zero, when Cape Town was due to run out of water, was scheduled for April 2018 but narrowly avoided This doesn t affect us. This doesn t affect our industry. Or does it?
Not just a developing world issue London, Sao Paulo, Jakarta, Miami, Istanbul, Tokyo, Moscow and Mexico City could be facing Day Zero meaning they will run out of water in the next few decades unless their water use radically changes. More than a third of Americans are at risk of losing affordable drinking water (source: Michigan State University). California had its own Zero Day not long ago when, in Tulare County seven thousand people had no water. Conservative estimate for a modern Data Centre: 260,000 gallons / 1MW Combination of PUE & WUE is now essential
The Data Centre industry must take its environmental responsibility seriously, including water conservation
The Evolution of Data Centre Cooling Cooling Tower Air Side Optimisation Indirect Adiabatic?
Cooling Tower Huge water use Equipment degradation Risk of bacterial infection Maintenance & water treatment
Air Side Optimisation Presentation delivered at DCD, 2009
Air Side Optimisation
Air Side Optimisation Ambient Cooler than set-point: Free Cooling
Air Side Optimisation Ambient higher than set-point: Mechanical Cooling
Air Side Optimisation Increase set-point: More Free Cooling
Air Side Optimisation Airedale have always been pioneers in data centre cooling We were the first to develop solutions using higher air temperatures to maximise free cooling Still very relevant and widely-used today.
Indirect Adiabatic Cooling Still uses a lot of water Water storage or mechanical back up Still Equipment degradation loss of performance Still Risk of bacterial infection High water treatment & maintenance costs
Indirect Adiabatic Cooling 1 MW 8 Houses 50 MW 400 Houses Typical adiabatic system = 260,000 gallons of water pa for 1MW of cooling
The Evolution of Data Centre Cooling Cooling Tower Air Side Optimisation Indirect Adiabatic Water Side? Optimisation
What is Water Side Optimisation? Close approach temperatures Increased T Optimised supply and return air Smart controls with dynamic optimisation CRAH/CRAC with maximised coil surface Free Cooling Chiller/DAC
