2 5G - Overview 5G is at peak research and standardization activity. After half a decase of research, the first 5G standards are starting to be released covering different use cases We will explain these main trends Designed to meet very challenging technical requirements: Data Rate 20 Gbit/s (user 100 Mbit/s) Mobility 500 km/h Connection density 10 6 devices / km 2 Latency 1 ms Spectrum efficiency 3x 2

4 5G - Point to Multipoint Overview Historically, point to multipoint transmissions have been the first mean of information and entertainment to a large number of citizens. Radio then Television where the only live information and entertainment means. Even today, Broadcast remains the most useful mean to address a large population in an efficient way. 4

5 5G - Linear TV/Media Seniors still use linear TV as main source of information and entertainment Linear Terrestrial TV is losing spectrum (digital dividend), but needs to be replaced Unlike the younger generation, senior people will likely use linear TV in any form rather than streaming and gaming. Cellular TV can be a very good alternative 5

6 5G - Public Warning Systems Public warning systems represents an efficient way to inform the population of a disaster Emergency alerts can be also sent in case of a missing child The best and efficient way to transmit these information is to use broadcast (no cell attach, no counting, etc) PUBLIC WARNING AND SAFETY Public Warning Systems Tsunami Alert 6

7 5G -IOT Internet of things will drive the next wave of growth in connected devices The number of connected devices will reach 30 billion by Software updates can be carried out in a very efficient way by using broadcast especially during hours where the network is not at peak use. 8 5G - Broadcast in 3GPP before 5G Broadcast (MBMS) was considered in 3GPP as soon as Rel 6 for UMTS When LTE standardization started in Release 8, the evolved version of MBMS (embms) was still part of the standard for Rel 8 embms continued to evolved with all LTE releases until release 14 with features such Single Cell Point to Multipoint (SC-PTM) and Enhancd TV (EnTV) The main drawback of all these releases in that broadcast was always an add on features with limitations 8

10 The Role of Broadcast in 5G Innovative 5G use cases require broadcast transmissions! Broadcast allows an infinite number of users to receive the same content at the same time, using just a fixed number of resources. Big potential in convergence of fixed and mobile broadband networks for large-scale media delivery. Point to multipoint as a delivery optimization tool, rather than a service. Broadcasters interest in 3GPP technologies has increased recently. 4G LTE Rel-14 has incorporated many requirements, but suffers from the embms legacy. 10

11 The Role of Broadcast in 5G Broadcast is a very powerful technique to address a large number of users. Broadcast has a tendency to lag MBB in research and standards because the first use case addresses is usually high throughput broadband. We expect Broadcast to be addressed in release 16 or release 17 of 3GPP. Currently there is an initiative to introduce a broadcast Study Item to 3GPP that will be discussed in June plenary. 11

12 Technical Analysis - 5G New Radio 5G New Radio: It is also necessary to evaluate the 5G Rel-15 unicast specification from 3GPP to propose the future 5G broadcast solution. Considering use cases already defined. From 3 different perspectives: o Air interface & RAN o Core network o Content delivery 5G New Radio Performance in AWGN (SISO) 12

13 Horizon 2020 Research Many 5G-PPP project are now in phase 2 of the European Commission H2020 program H2020 is not restricted to Europe (Brazil, Taiwan ) 13

15 The 5G-Xcast project is a very ambitious H2020 project to develop an end to end broadcast solution with many testbeds and use case trials! 15

16 Scope TITLE USE CASES AIR INTERFACE & PTM RAN Broadcast and Multicast Communication Enablers for the Fifth-Generation of Wireless Systems The project has identified and defined requirements and KPIs for M&E, Automotive, IoT and PWS Comprehensive and holistic, design will include the radio interface, RAT protocols and RAN architecture CONVERGED CORE NETWORK Combining fixed, mobile and broadcast networks. Using mix of unicast / broadcast / multicast / caching capabilities 16
